Applications :: IMovie Formats Wont Work

Mar 17, 2009

I have a video file that I recorded to my Windows PC. I have a Macbook Aluminum 2.0. The file I recorded to my windows PC is a Mpeg2, I copied it over to my Mac to try to use it with iMovie. However, it is greyed out as an option to import into iMovie. So, then I tried converting to an .avi with handbrake, as other AVI files I have on my mac will import. However, after converting, the new AVI file would still not import into iMovie. I then used Toast to convert the original Mpeg2 to a .mov file, and again, the file is still greyed out as an option to import into iMovie. Although, the .mov file plays fine in Quicktime, though I use VLC for other formats that will not work, and I also have Perian for Quicktime.

Am I doing something wrong? I have only had my Macbook for under a week, my first time using Mac OS X, still trying to get used to everything.

OS X :: Downloading IMovie 08 And Video Formats?

Mar 12, 2009

I have iMovie 08 on my Mac, and it is the most confusing piece of software I have come across in sometime now.

I am wondering if there is any way possible in downloading iMovie 06 for free? I have tried for an hour and still no luck in downloading, all I can download is updates. so if anyone knows a download link to iMovie 06 . Also, I have a Sony cam corder what records in .wmv format, iMovie doesn't like this, anyway I can download some 'updates' so that I can edit and render videos in iMovie instead of booting up Windows.

Applications :: Won't Work With IMovie 09 Transition

Jan 24, 2010

I've recently started to use iMovies 09 and have found it quite easy. Although on my latest project one transition I'm using (mosaic) doesn't accept the change to the duration. I can change the duration in the inspection box, but then it doesn't accept that change in the actual transition down in project area.

It says 6.0s in the inspection box, but 1.0s on the actual transition.

Applications :: Won't Work With AVIs In IMovie 08 / Can't Import

Feb 19, 2009

I have 8 720p movies which really aren't that long, totaling around 350mb. I tried to import these into iMovie 08, however it never seems to work as the event I import them into always says there is nothing in the event.

The videos always copy across though, because after looking through the Movies folder I found them in the iMovie 08 events folder. I'm assuming this is a problem which occurs when iMovie attempts to generate thumbnails, but I'm not sure.

If I slowly scroll or hover over the video frames it will play the audio, but not then the video is being played. and the audio wave button is on, but the green audio bars won't even display while the video is playing, but will when I'm hovering over video layers.

Applications :: Won't Work With Video Quality / Importing QT Into IMovie

Jun 10, 2009

I have got a .mov file (1GB) that looks fabulous when I watch it in the Quicktime player. But when I drag it into iMovie, the quality is terrible.

At first I figured this was just because iMovie displays lower quality for editing and that the original quality would be preserved when I bring it back into Quicktime. But the quality is just as bad after compression.

No matter what I do, the final Quicktime video is atrocious. When I compress it from iMovie, Im choosing the highest quality setting to bring it into .dv format. In .dv format, the file is still very heavy, but it looks terrible. If iMovie preserved the quality (whether we see it or not), shouldnt it be visible in .dv?

I also tried exporting the .dv into mpg-4 and plenty other formats (thinking .dv may still be hiding the true quality) but that doesnt work either. Im still on an iBook G4 (PowerPC) running Mac OS X v10.4.11 and QuickTime Pro v7.4.5.

Applications :: Two Separate ITunes Libraries In Different Formats?

Jun 16, 2009

I have an external hard drive which holds all of my music. It is my main iTunes library and is in AIFF (CD) format. What I want to do is copy this music and convert it to MP3 (or similar compressed format compatible with iPod) from the external drive, and put it into a separate library on my Mac's internal hard drive in the MP3 format. That way I'd still have my original music in AIFF on the external drive, and a copy of it in MP3 format on the internal drive for moving to my iPod or iPhone. Is this possible? Does it make sense? Also, is there a better (in terms of sound quality) compressed format than MP3 to use?

Applications :: Office 2008 - Any Way To Import Citation Formats

Jan 18, 2008

Just grabbed Office 2008 and was excited to use the citation manager (I'm a grad student), but then realized that only 4 citation styles are available: APA, MLA, Chicago, and Turabian. Now, I realize that these cover the basics, but if I'm not mistaken Office 2007 for Windows allows you to select from more citation styles. My problem is that I use Chicago author-date, not standard Chicago footnotes. Therefore Word doesn't format my bibliographies correctly. Is there a way to import citation formats? Or at least edit them?

Applications :: How To Make ITunes Accept Other Video Formats

Jul 15, 2008

As many of you may or may not have realized, iTunes has an annoying habit of not letting one import any video files not in "iTunes friendly" formats. This confounded me as iTunes presumably used Quicktime for playing... so if Quicktime+Perian/Flip4Mac can play them, why can't iTunes? Sick and tired of having to convert AVIs and other downloaded video types for the sake of having them in iTunes, I sought out a way of fooling iTunes via tweaking the File Type / Creator settings on files so that iTunes would accept them.

Start out by choosing the app/utility of your choice. I use FileBuddy (search here for it) but any number of utilities are capable of doing the job.

I then open up File Buddy, drag the video file/s into the main window and then click "Get Info". In the resulting window, near the bottom right is a pull-down menu labelled "Type". Whatever it is currently set to (in my AVI case, it was "VfW"), change it to "MooV" and click "Save" (or "Change All" if you are dealing with multiple files). Voila! Drag the old files into iTunes and there you go!

Applications :: Multiple Formats On Single Hard Drive

Jan 14, 2010

I recently bought a 1TB hard drive... I am trying to partition it to be 250GB Mac Format and 750GB NTFS. The reason for NTFS format is because I work with ISO files and Blu-Ray movie files a lot that are well over the 4GB limit of FAT32/Mac formats. Is there a decent disk utility for OS X or Windows that can format a hard drive into both of these file systems? The built-in Disk Utility in OS X only does FAT, to my knowledge, so I need something else.

Applications :: Won't Work With Imovie Photo Quality / Quality Better In Iphoto

Nov 11, 2005

Started archiving all my old photos and creating dvds. started off using iphoto which is great for compiling a quick slideshow to a couple of music tracks. i then imported these to idvd and created my first dvd project which i was pretty pleased with for a first attempt. The only thing i found annoying was that i could not link all the slideshows together in idvd so that they played one after another, instead you had to come back to the menu and start the next one...so i thought i would import these slideshow movies into imovie and create a complete movie with chapters, titles etc. but when i did this i noticed that the quality of the slideshow in imovie was very noticeably worse.

being new to mac i wasnt sure what was up so i thought about importing the photos directly into imovie and working with them there. but once again the quality was really poor compared to the iphoto and idvd slideshows. after this i though maybe its just a preview problem and all will be well when i burn them to dvd and watch them on tv...so i burnt a dvd with one slideshow created in iphoto and imported into idvd and also put on a movie of the same slide show that id imported into imovie and back.

anyway long story short quality still better in slide show created in iphoto.

Applications :: Won't Work With Audio / Audio Skimming In IMovie 09

Apr 1, 2009

I'm using iMovie 09 with the very latest updates applied and I am having trouble with audio skimming in just one of my projects. The project is only 8 minutes long and is just a collage of pictures to music.
The audio skimming button is toggled to on but no green bars show in the equalizer when I skim over the video. The audio works fine when playing the project and in other windows around the project such as the event viewer. I have plenty of free hard drive space and the thumbnails slider is set to '5s'. ALL of my other projects skim no problem.

Now this is the strange part. If I click to enter the precision editor on any part of the video and then click done (even without altering anything) the skimming comes back. It thus disappears if place a new item in the timeline until I go back into the precision editor where it re enables itself.

How can I get the final film back without spending about a week re-editing everything?

As of late i've been importing what i film into iMovie. In iMovie i'll edit the video to my liking. In iMovie i'll "export" to the media browser so it'll show up in GarageBand. Then i'll open GarageBand and edit my film further, dealing with sound; adding music. After that i'll export it as a .MOV to my desktop. Then i'll open iMovie again and import that .MOV file and from there in iMovie will have it upload to YouTube in its original HD format.

OS X :: Importing Clips Into IMovie - Won't Work

I want to import some clips into iMovie (not from a camera, but a file) and it just won't work! The programme goes through all the steps, but in the end there is no file in iMovie; it just says 'No matching video'. I've checked the folder where clips should go (movie events --> eventx) and the clips have been moved to there, so why won't it show up in iMovie? It's driving me mad! Do the clips have to be a certain length (i remember that in iMovie 04 they had to be under 9minutes) or do they have to be a certain format? [I've been using .avi files.]

Software :: Imovie Doesnt Work - Change Resolution?

Oct 28, 2008

Basically I really dont understand imovie used to work on my ibook but now there just seems to be a box popping up saying I need to change my resolution to 1024 x 768 for imovie to be able to work.

I went to system preferences, displays, and I get a window which is titled VA1916wSERIES and the only resolutions on offer seem to be 800 x 600 then behind it there is a window called VGA display and that has more options and I changed this to 1024 x 768 60 Hz....but it didnt make much difference, I then thought maybe I should change the option on the VA1916wSERIES window to 60 hz so it matched...but apart from that I dont see how to change that window. Imovie still isn't working, still telling me I need to get a bigger resolution, even though I have.

Now I have no clue what any of that actually means, I'm just blindly following instructions so maybe I did something really obvious wrong. If not, could anyone recommend any free video editing software I could download to my ibook?
