I've got a new mac and a lot of the stuff on it pre loaded I dont want, is there a way of 'quick' formatting the drive or will I have to do a full format?
Do full formats eventually ruin hard drives?
I recently bought a 1TB hard drive... I am trying to partition it to be 250GB Mac Format and 750GB NTFS. The reason for NTFS format is because I work with ISO files and Blu-Ray movie files a lot that are well over the 4GB limit of FAT32/Mac formats. Is there a decent disk utility for OS X or Windows that can format a hard drive into both of these file systems? The built-in Disk Utility in OS X only does FAT, to my knowledge, so I need something else.

All I did was follow instruction for hooking it up. Also, I'm a Mac user. Is it customary to do a full and proper format of newly purchased external hard drives? The most I did was verify the disk in disk utility when I first plugged in the HD to my computer. Is that enough?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just ordered a Seagate 500gb portable hard drive. I want it for backing up my 250gb Macbook, storing films and also for exchanging files between computers (Mac and Windows).
After reading various posts on the forums I'm planning on making 3 partitions:
1) 300gb for time machine backup. Mac OS X Extended (Is this the same format as HFS+ just a different name?)
2) 15gb for exchanging files. FAT32
3) The remainder for storing films. Mac OS X Extended.
Have i got these formats correct and are they suitable?
Also, i read that FAT32 is fragile and data can get wiped off it. If this did happen to the FAT32 partition, would it jsut affect that partition or could it damage data in all the partitions?
I been searching the net for an answer but everything requires to buy something. I have my original hard drive of 140 GB and just bought a new one thats 1TB. I want to transfer my applications from the 140 to the 1TB. Is there a simple way of doing this.

Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.
I have an portable external hard drive that I'd like Time Machine to back up at the same time it backs up my laptop hard drive. How do I set Time Machine to do both drives at once?

2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.
Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?
Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?
Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?

View 19 Replies View RelatedI have a video file that I recorded to my Windows PC. I have a Macbook Aluminum 2.0. The file I recorded to my windows PC is a Mpeg2, I copied it over to my Mac to try to use it with iMovie. However, it is greyed out as an option to import into iMovie. So, then I tried converting to an .avi with handbrake, as other AVI files I have on my mac will import. However, after converting, the new AVI file would still not import into iMovie. I then used Toast to convert the original Mpeg2 to a .mov file, and again, the file is still greyed out as an option to import into iMovie. Although, the .mov file plays fine in Quicktime, though I use VLC for other formats that will not work, and I also have Perian for Quicktime.
Am I doing something wrong? I have only had my Macbook for under a week, my first time using Mac OS X, still trying to get used to everything.
I have an external hard drive which holds all of my music. It is my main iTunes library and is in AIFF (CD) format. What I want to do is copy this music and convert it to MP3 (or similar compressed format compatible with iPod) from the external drive, and put it into a separate library on my Mac's internal hard drive in the MP3 format. That way I'd still have my original music in AIFF on the external drive, and a copy of it in MP3 format on the internal drive for moving to my iPod or iPhone. Is this possible? Does it make sense? Also, is there a better (in terms of sound quality) compressed format than MP3 to use?

View 7 Replies View RelatedJust grabbed Office 2008 and was excited to use the citation manager (I'm a grad student), but then realized that only 4 citation styles are available: APA, MLA, Chicago, and Turabian. Now, I realize that these cover the basics, but if I'm not mistaken Office 2007 for Windows allows you to select from more citation styles. My problem is that I use Chicago author-date, not standard Chicago footnotes. Therefore Word doesn't format my bibliographies correctly. Is there a way to import citation formats? Or at least edit them?
View 10 Replies View RelatedAs many of you may or may not have realized, iTunes has an annoying habit of not letting one import any video files not in "iTunes friendly" formats. This confounded me as iTunes presumably used Quicktime for playing... so if Quicktime+Perian/Flip4Mac can play them, why can't iTunes? Sick and tired of having to convert AVIs and other downloaded video types for the sake of having them in iTunes, I sought out a way of fooling iTunes via tweaking the File Type / Creator settings on files so that iTunes would accept them.
Start out by choosing the app/utility of your choice. I use FileBuddy (search here for it) but any number of utilities are capable of doing the job.
I then open up File Buddy, drag the video file/s into the main window and then click "Get Info". In the resulting window, near the bottom right is a pull-down menu labelled "Type". Whatever it is currently set to (in my AVI case, it was "VfW"), change it to "MooV" and click "Save" (or "Change All" if you are dealing with multiple files). Voila! Drag the old files into iTunes and there you go!
I'm running OS X 10.9.3 and now that Time Machine supports it, I have two external drives set up for Time Machine backups. One (the one I've been using all along) is 750GB and has not very much space left. The second, which I recently installed, is 1TB and has approx 625 GB of space left. The reason I installed the second drive is because my first was running out of space and I would regularly get the message saying that the drive is full and older backups were getting deleted. So I'm curious, why isn't Time Machine using the space on my newly installed, second, Time Machine drive? Why is it still clearing out old backups on my original drive? Is there any way I can stop this? Or are the old backups going to continue to get deleted from my original drive until some sort of parity is achieved between the backups on the two drives?

So, any suggestions on how to do this?I'm running the OpenCL Benchmarking Tool, I don't know if it's effective or not :P
I have a Imac 20 with a small 3.5 hard drive and I have bought a bigger 360 gig 3.5 hard drive to replace the old one. I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?

i've heard of people using RAID to join them, but i want details on how i could do this.
Lets say the battery been use extensively to the point where full charge will only last like an hour. Does it mean in time, the battery will weaken to the point to where you can't even turn on the macbook pro anymore? I was hoping that since the places I am traveling will have an electrical outlet. I wouldn't think I would need battery life for over 3 hours.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy ibook was running really slow, so i decided to get some more memory. i'm no computer expert but i used to work in the IT dept and have replaced memory before (in pc's).
Anyway, i went to my local computer store, told the guy there what kind of computer i had. (ibook G4, 14-inch with a built-in memory and an empty slot). He looked it up on the system, figured out what i needed and i bought it. It was a Corsair 1GB DDR2 667mhz. He said it was exactly what i needed. I didn't question him.
Tonight, i go to install it, and it doesn't go in easily. I got it in though, and turned on my computer, and it wouldn't start. i took it out, and it started fine.
I went to some online forums about installing memory on my specific model and people were saying you really need to force it in there, more than you think would even be safe, but it takes a lot of force to get it in, so i thought maybe it didn't work the first time because it wasn't in all the way. i kept trying, and i got it in further, thinking i did it. i went to turn on the computer, dead.
So, i took out the memory, and now my computer still won't start. NOTHING.
I went back to the store, told them what happened, and i spoke to a different salesman than yesterday, and when this guy looked at what i bought, he said it was definitely not the correct one.
He said DDR2 is definitely not compatible with the older iBook. He also said that he looked on his system to find out what type i really need, but the system wouldn't show my model (because its a few years old). Pretty much, he said that the other employee messed up because the computer wouldn't even show him what i would need.
But what i would like to know is what's wrong with my computer exactly? did the mother board fry? did i lose everything? do i need to send it into mac for repair? how screwed am i? and also, is the store responsible for this at all?
The sad part to this story is that in early august of this year, this laptop's battery stopped working, and it was a problem with the power supply. I sent it off to mac and they fixed it, but when it was returned, it wasn't turning on. i sent it back again and they said the motherboard had to be replaced. luckily that happened a month before my extended warranty expired, but this time, i don't have a warranty anymore.
Any insight on my problem? Please someone, cheer me up. Tell me there is something i can do to save my computer and that my motherboard isnt fried again.
Can putting the wrong memory in your computer completely ruin it?
I have a MacBook pro 13" that I bought around April 2010 (right when they switched to the 4GB of RAM and GeForce 320M video card)The original problem started with my trackpad movements becoming very sluggish. This eventually led to a complete lockup at the apple screen. I did everything suggested in previous posts (reset pram ECT). Nothing worked so I reinstalled OSX and everything was fixed.
About a week later the problem started again with the same exact outcome. Now after reinstalling a third time, I have this very wierd screen on my screen. Its hard to explain so please see pictures. After sitting on the apple logo for about 5 min, this is now my screen...

I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard to be able to use newer Leopard & above only versions of software ie FCP, Aperature, etc.
The issue is that I would like to keep the Tiger OSX as I run Pro Tools LE 7 on it. Upgrading to Snow Leopard would render Pro Tools LE 7 incompatible and I would have to buy it again.
So here's what I'm thinking. I would like to install a secondary HDD in Bay 2 and install Snow Leopard on it.
Is it possible to have OSX Tiger on the HDD in Bay 1 and have OSX Snow Leopard on the HDD Bay 2? Could they each be a different startup to be selected via System Preferences or at bootup? I would only want to run one OS at any given time.
If so what would be a workflow for installing the 2nd HDD and setting it up with OSX Snow Leopard.
Also, compatible hard drives for the 2006 Intel Mac Pros seem to be harder to find now. I called Apple and they no longer sell any compatible internal HDDs.
I'm planning on getting a Mac Pro with multiple hard drives and was thinking about having a main drive for Leopard and documents, one for music, one for video and another for Windows. I was just curious to see how others have theirs set up and any if there is advice to be shared.
