View 2 RepliesI browsed the threads on this and many sites before I thought I'd report back on my day with iPhoto - just so that those of you out there can benefit.Basically, and for those noobs that don't know the gen, iPhoto and iTunes both have an interface that work on showing you what you have by way of thumbnail or album sleeve image - then, upon selecting, linking your requirement to see or listen to the actual file itself buried somewhere else.This is a great system for a number of great reasons - that is until your links break. You see a thumbnail of a picture of uncle Bob you want to see so you double click it. You are rewarded not with a high rez image of Bob but instead a rather unimaginative and rude exclamation mark (exclamation point for you Americans). The link is broken - you have an orphaned file. It might not be lost or deleted - in fact it is probably still somewhere on your machine or external drives etc.

I record my activity for my job in an excel file on my MacBook Pro, and for some reason, the last few files that I have saved have somehow disappeared. They are simply not there when I go to open them. Is there any way I can track them down in my computer?

I recently backed up some DVD's via Toast using Toast own file format.They were backed up straight to the external HD itself.
I checked that they were all working after the process finished, they were working.
But I think my MBP went into standby whilst the External HD was still connected, and so it was never ejected properly.
Now that I've come to view the files again, they aren't there!!
There's just a Zero KB file, called 'photography', which was the name of the folder they were stored in.
I've tried viewing the folder under windows via VMware, but it says the folder is inaccessible due to being corrupt, or something.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for recovering those files?
The external HD is NTFS, I think I used a patch so that my MBP could read/write files to it.
I lost everything on my desktop, all my folders and files. When i go to the MAC OS X and click on desktop it says : The folder "Desktop" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges. I don't know where all my things have gone. I can't save anything onto the desktop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB running OS X 10.5.6. Had it for over a year, no problems until tonight. I was having trouble connecting to a printer via Airport and rebooted the MacBook. When it loaded, my desktop photo was gone, my customized dock had reverted to the first-run configuration and my entire Documents folder was empty. The capacity info at the bottom of the Finder window reassured me that my files were still there. I restored them to an external HD with Data Rescue, then ran the repair utilities from Disk Utility using my Leopard disk. Rebooted with no change.
Then, attempted to reinstall Leopard with my original disk and after I selected the language, it told me that Leopard can't be installed on this computer. About this Mac still shows version 10.5.6. All apps are intact and boot up but they all boot in first-run mode. Entourage has lost my mail database and my multiple email accounts/passwords/instructions. I've been on Macs for 20 years and never run into anything like this. How do I straighten this out? I'm willing to put in the hours to reinstate passwords, preferences, etc., but I really want to know what's behind this in case it happens again.

Some days ago I lost all of my 15 GB folders and files that stored in my Macbook Pro hard drive called DATA. I brought my Macbook pro to an experienced computer tecnicians who providing data recovery services. To his and my suprise, after checking, scanning it a few hours, he said their is no way to recover because he did not find any trails at all. The computer still seems working properly - I have no problem with any applications. There are few other folders in the DATA hard disk containing pictures, computer programs still remain. These lost folders and files contain mainly documents (word, excel, power point, pdf etc) which I accumulated in my many years working !!!!. I did not make a back up since last September partly because I think Mac is very safe.

A few days ago, I opened iTunes and a notification appeared saying my Library was "damaged," and then proceeded to reopen with about 500 songs missing. I went through my iPod to find a few of the songs that were on it that were erased from my Library (I haven't synced my iPod since it happened for fear of losing the songs for good), intending to simply re-import them into my Library - but the files were nowhere to be found. I opened Finder and searched for quite a while, but I couldn't find a trace. I've tried opening iTunes while holding down the Option key and choosing a Previous Library, but the most recent of the Previous Library .itl files is the same one - the one missing 500 songs.

Stupid I know, but I saw my 'home' file was named root and for some reason thought it should be Home so I tried to change it.Meanwhile about half an hour later I had a power cut. On rebooting the computer, it logs me in to a default user with default settings.I know many people have done this before and I've been searching the net all day trying to do everything they say. The main difference is, the name wasn't changed and is still root therefore there is no 'old' file somewhere called home with all my files in that I can just swap over or change the name back to what it was before as most people seem to have been able to do.

After opening Mac HD folder, made the mistake of attempting to change name next to house icon (Home? perhaps) along left spine (spine that includes 'Desktop' 'Documents' 'Applications' etc.). The computer started to run as if adjusting to the name change. From that point on, iphoto/tunes/aperture starting opening as if it was the first time asking for set-up preferences.
No photos/music can be found in the folders. I can still see my folders on the external hard drive that the tunes/photo are on, but they will not open when I open the programs. Any suggestions on fixing the links? I tried in vain to change the name back. The error message says that the previous name is already taken.
All files and folders on the desktop disappeared, I checked time machine and even there are no longer present, even going back months.

I made my PC a hackintosh after a days work, i am using leopard and i wanted the applications folder in my stacks, so i dragged it from the finder and its gone. where can i find it. also where do i open virtual keyboard to type different characters. i cant type apostrophe nor question mark because my keyboard is turkish, hackintosh understands its a us keyboard and all combinations are different. sorry for typing this bad.

I don't have iLife 09 on any system discs, and now I can't open my iPhoto library on my Mac Pro.
With iLife 11 reportedly close, I am really reluctant to shell out for another copy. Is there any way to move my iPhoto and iWeb from my MBP to my Mac Pro? I tried dumping iPhoto into applications but that wasn't enough. I only backed up my Home directory and not my system or system library.
I had upgraded my software to Leopard and after a year or so the HD crashed the week before Christmas.
I got a new HD installed and I loaded the Leopard software I had purchased. Today I noticed there is no iPhoto. It came basic when I bought the Mac in Dec 2008, I'm certain.
Do I have to buy the iLife to get iPhoto now? Wasn't it free at one time and came installed?
I have searched these forums and Google to no avail; perhaps I am asking the wrong I had, and still have, the default Admin User account. I installed my MAC Office and Fusion among other things in this account. I then joined the MAC to my office Windows domain which created a new user. When I log in as the new user all I see is the default dock; no applications. And all setting were lost; I think I can understand that one. So the question is, how do I get the new user access to the applications installed under the Admin user?

How it happend: I've been having this gltich, where it says it cannot buy a song, because the connection was lost. So clicked "buy song" on the song, and it said "connection was lost, please try again later" so, I tried clicking buy again, and it said "you already purchased this item", and it started downloading the song, and never charged me!
View 24 Replies View Relateda few minutes ago i was cleaning up my dock, i pulled garageband off and then noticed i still needed it there, so i went into my applications folder to try and find it, but it's not there? ive used spotlight search and looked in a fair few folders - including the recycling bin, and cannot find it. Ive also tried opening some of the files ive made with it and they open in quicktime and says the document cannot be opened. dont say reinstall iLife 09, i bought it from a guy on ebay with it preinstalled; but he never sent the disks.
