I am doing a Ph.D. research and always using my Mac to write my research. In addition to writing text, I sometimes need to create models that represent my research findings. Microsoft word doesn't help me to do that since I need to something professional that is easy to understand shows all relationships among different components. Are there any recommended tools which are simple that allow me to create models?

I live in Denmark so I don't have access to all the discount-stuff that you have in the states. However, I stumpled upon a version called "Open Academic" that I can purchase for about 2/3 of the normal price. I want to be sure that I can make it work though. Does anyone have this version, and can they verify that I don't need to register it as being a student somewhere in the US (or any other parameter that I don't fullfill being a normal university student i Danmark)
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt would appear that the new iPhoto app that is being prepared for cross-platform use is being optimzed for cross-platform as iWork applications have been. The tools for altering photos only has a fraction of the tools currently available in Aperture (and even less than available in platforms like Lightroom. There had been hope that with the new iMac Pro that there was going to be a supercharged version of Aperture...but no mention at that role out, nor in today's WWDC.

I bought a copy of this on eBay and most of the CD's are not the latest versions. For example, I have Final Cut 5.1, SoundTrack 1.1, etc. The box shows the latest versions on the cover but the CD's say otherwise.
The seller said those are the version Apple shipped him in Sept 07. Is it possible that Apple included older versions of the software for the academic version or is he ripping me off?

I've got 20 MP4 files I'm trying to merge into a single MP4. When I drag any one of the MP4 files into MKV Tools it comes up with an error that says: "The variable theTrackData is not defined. (-2753)". Can someone either help with a solution to the MKV Tools problem or suggest another program to merge MP4 files without losing any video quality.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAre there any programs that clear out a mac for what I used to use in windows, like the temp folder, unused programs, caches, cookies, etc. For some reason my mac has been acting a lot slower with the color pinwheel of lag coming in more and more, I only got it in October and i rarely have more than four programs open at a time.

I'm eagerly waiting for the new MBP updates and when it finally arrives, i will be purchasing it for 2 reasons, school work and recording software. i have done i little bit of research on both Logic and Pro Tools and they equally interest me, but i was wondering which one would be more versatile for my needs: ill be recording guitar, bass, and vocals and mixing them, mostly Death Metal genre, but i dont want to drag my amp to school so i was going to use a USB interface, which program has better/more realistic amp tones?
My daughter is coming to the Mac side (my son-in-law came over last summer). She has previously used FileMaker for the PC for her virtual index cards--that is, for taking notes and keeping other information for her books and articles and other academic purposes. FileMaker really isn't the best for the purpose, and she's hoping that there may be some fellow academics among you who have encountered this situation. She is over her head in work and has asked me to present the question to you.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWe all know, spaces are great for organizing. But when I use Adobe apps such as Photoshop CS3 Extended or anything in my CS3 suite, there's some weird glitch. I usually switch back and forth between spaces. And when I go back to the space with my Adobe app open in, on the stage my tools don't work. I select something such as lasso and go onto the stage but then, it twitches, from normal cursor to lasso cursor. This happens on all tools, and only some parts of the stage I can draw/use the tool on. Sometimes I can't even use it at all. I'm forced to quit the app and restart it to keep on working.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of setting up iChat on my spousal unit's iMac. I've already created a Jabber account, using her gmail address. That seems to work fine. Now I'd like to add an AIM account. When I click on "Get an iChat Account..." in the Account Setup window,It was my understanding that this signup gets you an AIM account, but it from the first line on the page, it seems to assume that you're using .Mac (even more oddly, since .Mac doesn't actually exist any longer).What am I missing here? Aren't AIM, MobileMe and .Mac accounts the same for purposes of iChat?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just have a quick question about Numbers (iWork '09). I need to graph some supply and demand graphs for school. How would I go about doing this? Whenever I create a graph based on a chart, it just plots each row as it's own line. I can only edit the values in the Y-axis, and obviously I need to be able to work with the X-axis as well.
Update: I played around with it more and figured it out. I guess you have to graph it as a scatter plot and then choose to connect the dots, and remove the dots, rather than choose the line graph, whose icon looks just like a graph of supply and demand.
I'm trying create 200 MB rar files out of a 700 + MB directory. When I check "split archive" and select "user defined" under the volume size dropdown and click create rar, it creates 500+ rar archives! Nowhere does it ask me how big I want the volume size for "user defined". Does anyone know how to use this app? I mean, I know how to alternatively archive into 200 mb parts (zip them, split & concat the zip file) but that requires the user to unarchive twice.

I want the main menu to contain an image with the front and rear musculature of the human body, and you can then choose a muscle by going up and down. When you click the muscle you enter a submenu where a small list of videos are available where you train that particular muscle.
I have made a .psd with the images of the body in black and white, and about 10-12 layers where the same muscles are cut out and coloured red (highlighted areas which will light up while navigating in the menu). [URL]. There is the .psd file if you want to see what it looks like.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI would like a little more information on create a split rar archive in OS X 10.4.11. At the moment I have downloaded winrar and copied the rar file to /bin/ and I can execute the command

rar a -v50000 testfile
to create a split archive, each part 50mb each.
But the only problem with this is that it will create files using the extension .part#.rar and I would like it to use .r00 .r01 .r02 etc.
this is kind of an annoyance and I can't seem to find any answers online. My left column on Mail usually has 3 folders (inbox, sent, trash). That's how I like it. Every once in a while though, it creates a new folder under my email address. Why does this happen, and can I stop it? In case it helps, I only have 1 email address and it's a .me account. Also, I do send emails from my Mac, iPhone and occasionally [URL] from a work PC. I don't know if that's relevant, I just wanted to get as many facts out there as I can.

I find it incredibly annoying as it changes the order of my folders so I forever clicking the wrong one. I have tried hiding it, but it just created another folder.

On one I cannot get the music video to play and on the second I cannot access the lyrics pages for tracks 10 onwards by clicking on a button on the song list page unless I click on tracks 1 to 9 and use the arrows.

My CPU usage during this process was around 10% so what gives? I have an early 2009 iMac with 4GB's of RAM.
Is there any program for the Mac I can use that I can make a timelapse? I tried Gawker, but I feel unsure about using it after it crashed one time, losing hours of frames.. on Windows, I had a program called Tilaphos which saved each frame in a jpeg and turned them all into a movie when you were done, keeping the jpeg. I'm hoping there's something similar for the Mac.
