MacBook Air :: Cannot Update Applications Because Startup Disk Is Full
Aug 29, 2014I cannot update my applications because my start up disk is full.Â
I have :
- emptied downloads and email downloads folders
- placed all bulky documents in dropbox and external hard drives (movies, pictures, etc)Â
Despite all this, I still have no clue where half of my computer contents come from (about 60GB totally unidentified)Â
I have downloaded Tidy Up - it found 6000 duplicate documents on my computer but ask me to pay to delete them!Â
how I can clean the contents of my computer for free? What is taking so much space? Where do I need to look?Â

MacBook Pro :: Disk FULL Error When Export Movie In IMovie Or Burn Disk In IDVD
Nov 25, 2010Every time I try to export a movie in iMovie or burn a disk in iDVD an error message pops up and says that my startup disk is full. So I bought an external hard drive and backed up my mac using Time Machine. Now I want to delete everything off my mac's internal Hard Drive and use my external hard drive so I can empty my disk. Does this make sense? If so will you please tell me how to do so.

Backup failed because the Time Machine backup was too large for the 1TB backup disk.Â
Indeed, the iMac's disk says it's nearly got 1TB of content on it. However, when I actually search for files, I can only locate about 300GB of files on the disk ...Â
Why is the disk tell me there's another 600 GB on my hard drive that I can't see? Is it really there or have I got a faulty disk? If it is there, how do I get rid of it so I can backup?Â

OS X :: Reports Disk Full And Won't Start
Jan 14, 2011I ran SuperDuper last night and the backup failed with an unknown error. After, Spotlight didn't find files. I rebooted and at the login screen was given the error message 'backup disc full, delete some files' - problem is, OS X won't boot beyond the starfield screen, so there's no way of deleting files or running the system. I took the drive out and put it in a USB caddy on another machine and ran Disk Utility - it said repairs were needed, so I did this. However, putting it back into the MBP nothing has changed, it still won't boot and insists the disc is full - there is over 180GB free! (I can see this when I mount it on another machine.)

OS X :: Startup Disk Full - Slowing Down Mac
May 5, 2010I'm a fairly naive mac user and got my friend to instal my new harddrive.
It's big, with 320GB.
However, he set up a startupdisk partition, with a size of 20GB, called OSX.
For some reason this is now full and slowing down my MAC which is particularly annoying as I have college essays to submit very soon!
I've checked what is on my startupdisk and it is as follows:
Private 8GB
Applications 5GB
Library 3.5GB
System 2.3GB
I don't understand what this means but I have copied applications, library and system to my HD and tried to delete off startupdisk but it won't let me. say it is require by mac.

Dec 27, 2009At work I am using a Mac os 10.3.9 and I have been getting a message telling me that the start up disk is full. Usually when I delete messages from the mailbox it gives me most of my memory back, but this time it didn't. I called my server and they deleted the messages from there, but that didn't do anything either. I have about 88 MB in my memory. Does anyone know what I can do to gain the memory back? I have went and repaired permissions, but that didn't do anything for it. I am not very computer literate and right now I am at home and do not have access to the computer.

May 16, 2012Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.

Also in the finder I apparently do not have any files because the my files section is blank. i have cleaned up the download folder and emptied the trash as well as performed a diskrepair. May 27, 2012I had been trying to cleanup my MacBook Pro as the disk was almost full. However I wasn't thinking tonight and downloaded my mail. When I tried to reboot my laptop, it crashed. I then tried to bring it up in Verbose Safe mode. It tells me the disk is full then turns itself off. Is there anyway I can bring it up in Safe mode long enough to delete some files?
I think I'm running OS X Lion but aren't 100% sure.

Jun 16, 2012I keep getting error messages saying my startup disk is full, so I delete a bunch of things, look in about this Mac, it says I have multiple GB available and then over time they disappear and I get the error message again. earlier today I had 8 GB, they all disappeared, so I deleted a big iphoto album and got a new 13 GB, now 45 minutes later it is down to 10GB....
