I can't open some programs. Why is computer saying disk is full?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
My computer keeps saying that my disk is full and I have tried to delete things but it still says the same thing.
Info:
MacBook Pro, iOS 5.1
iBook G4 1.33
OS 10.5.8
1.5 GB of ram
40 gig hard drive
I get a message that says that the disk is almost full. In disk utility, it states that 36 out of 37 gb of hard drive space has been used. However when I open the finder window after clicking on the hard drive (the first level showing applications, library, system, users), it only adds up to about 23 gb of space being used once I select calculate all sizes. It doesn't show me the other 13 gigabites that would add up to 36. I don't have the 10.5 CD's since I bought this off of ebay preloaded with the os.
I've already repaired drive holding the shift key upon startup. I've ran cocktail pilot mode to run scripts, repair permissions, empty cache, etc...I turned on invisible items using cocktail to see if I can find the extra gigabites to no avail.
It is not connected to the USB external drive. File Vault is off.

I had my computer serviced about 7 months ago due to a "startup disk" being full issue. I received my computer back from repairs and the startup disk is now full again, despite me saving no data but photos, and very few of those (approx. 300) I have a 2010 MacBook.

I keep getting a notification on my computer saying my start up disk is full. I deleted some files. I think its very unlikely that I have used up all the space on my computer.

I have taken everything off my desk top and backed it up and it's still saying the same thing! I've also emptied the trash. I get it when I try to use Photoshop.

Every time I try to export a movie in iMovie or burn a disk in iDVD an error message pops up and says that my startup disk is full. So I bought an external hard drive and backed up my mac using Time Machine. Now I want to delete everything off my mac's internal Hard Drive and use my external hard drive so I can empty my disk. Does this make sense? If so will you please tell me how to do so.

So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Is there an emergency disk remove thing for a powerbook G4? And is there a way to reformat my computer without the disk?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" iMac that I recently took to the Apple Store to have the LCD replaced. When I got my machine back and started it up, the fans kicked on full speed and will not stop...this didn't happen prior to me taking it to repair...it ran nearly silent. My firmware and so forth is all up to date.... I downloaded SMC Fan Control to see what was going on... my computer is operating at 97 degrees farenheit. but my CPU fan is spinning at 4035 rpm. That's crazy over the top. Optical drive fan (with no disk in it) is spinning at 3736rpm...and my HD fan is at 1098rpm (which is probably about right.

How do I clean my start up disk for more space? I have I cloud but don't really use it.

I have a Mac Pro early 2009. On the original start up disk (1 TB) I have Snow Leopard. I have a 2 TB disk also installed on the same machine. I want to upgrade the machine to Lion and have everything end up on the 2 TB disk as the start up disk. I was then planning on reformatting the original start up disk and use it for Windows 7 in Boot Camp.

If my SSD on my Air is almost full, will it slow down the computer? As in, if I have about 20GB left on my SSD, will the computer run slower?

I purchased an album off the itunes store recently, and one of the songs does not play in full, it stops after about 30 seconds - any idea why, how I can fix it, or how I can complain about it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedTried to backup my 1TB iMac (OSX 10.6.8) hard drive with a 1TB backup disk using Time Machine.
Backup failed because the Time Machine backup was too large for the 1TB backup disk.
Indeed, the iMac's disk says it's nearly got 1TB of content on it. However, when I actually search for files, I can only locate about 300GB of files on the disk ...
Why is the disk tell me there's another 600 GB on my hard drive that I can't see? Is it really there or have I got a faulty disk? If it is there, how do I get rid of it so I can backup?

I ran SuperDuper last night and the backup failed with an unknown error. After, Spotlight didn't find files. I rebooted and at the login screen was given the error message 'backup disc full, delete some files' - problem is, OS X won't boot beyond the starfield screen, so there's no way of deleting files or running the system. I took the drive out and put it in a USB caddy on another machine and ran Disk Utility - it said repairs were needed, so I did this. However, putting it back into the MBP nothing has changed, it still won't boot and insists the disc is full - there is over 180GB free! (I can see this when I mount it on another machine.)

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've suddenly been getting a pop up message that reads "Your startup disk is almost full - you need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files"
My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?
I'm a fairly naive mac user and got my friend to instal my new harddrive.
It's big, with 320GB.
However, he set up a startupdisk partition, with a size of 20GB, called OSX.
For some reason this is now full and slowing down my MAC which is particularly annoying as I have college essays to submit very soon!
I've checked what is on my startupdisk and it is as follows:
Private 8GB
Applications 5GB
Library 3.5GB
System 2.3GB
I don't understand what this means but I have copied applications, library and system to my HD and tried to delete off startupdisk but it won't let me. say it is require by mac.
I'm getting warned that my start up disk is almost full but I do not know how to deal with it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAt work I am using a Mac os 10.3.9 and I have been getting a message telling me that the start up disk is full. Usually when I delete messages from the mailbox it gives me most of my memory back, but this time it didn't. I called my server and they deleted the messages from there, but that didn't do anything either. I have about 88 MB in my memory. Does anyone know what I can do to gain the memory back? I have went and repaired permissions, but that didn't do anything for it. I am not very computer literate and right now I am at home and do not have access to the computer.

I have an Imac with Snow Leopard but my startup disk is full; I tried the System Disk to start it up and I also ran the disk utility but nothing. Any ideas on how to acces the hard drive to delete some files and free up space for the startup? Or what should I do to get it to start?
