Applications :: Safe To Delete Acrobat Distiller?
Nov 30, 2010
So in my 'Adobe Acrobat X Pro' folder I have this app called 'Acrobat Distiller'. Google says that its used when you work with postscripts files and want to convert them to pdf. Does anyone know if Distiller is used for something else? I only work with pdf files, so I was wondering if it was safe to delete Distiller. And if I delete it, does anyone know if I will have problems when there is an update for Acrobat, maybe it will complain about missing files?

When I first got my Mac I wanted to put the applications folder in the dock. But I copied it to the desktop first. And then I realized I didn't need to do that. So I put the folder back into the App folder. Now I want to delete them and I need to know if it's okay. Because they seem to be duplicates...but I'm not sure.

So I have created a video presentation for a project I am working on using Final Cut Pro. I noticed Final Cut Pro creates a default folder in Documents called "Final Cut Pro Documents." This folder contains six additional folders:
1. Audio Render Files
2. Autosave Vault
3. Capture Scratch
4. Render Files
5. Thumbnail Cache Files
6. Waveform Cache Files
Is it safe to delete these six folders? I wouldn't otherwise care, but collectively they are taking up 25 GB on my HD. I'm not planning to delete the actual FCP project files and their attached media, but rather the above six folders which appear to be cache? Do I run any risk of losing my entire presentation if I delete these six folders, or is it simply a matter of just re rendering my project if I delete them?

I have all my photos in folders, and I guess I must have imported some of them into iPhoto a while back because I just found a 2 GB "iPhoto Library" file. I don't actually use iPhoto at all, so I'd much rather use the 2 GB for something I actually use If I deleted that file, is there a chance I'd lose actual photos? All the photos are still located in the original folders, not any special iPhoto folders.

I'm cleaning up my external HD (not my startup disk), and want to remove some old backed up stuff. I have a particular stubborn folder 'Acrobat User Data' that i cannot get into the trash.
I get an error stating: 'The operation cannot be completed because the item "8.0_x86" is in use.
Anyone knows how to force delete this sort of stuff in OSX 10.5.8?

I am a graphic designer and use Adobe Acrobat Distiller to convert eps files to pdf files for press.
Last night, I upgraded my OSX to 10.4.9
Now, upon launching Distiller, it quits immediately.
Have tried to repair permissions. Rebooted several times.
Even installed 8.0 (up from 7.0), the newest version to see if it would make a difference. Same results.
Is there a way to go back to 10.4.8 where I had no such problems?

After getting my hard drive corrupted by dual boot of Linux, and having to delete everything, I decided to not use it again. With the fresh install of OSX, I inspected the partitions in Terminal and deleted most of them. However, there is a 200mb EFI partition still there. Is it safe to delete it, or will deleting it mess up my system again?

I have 33 dmg files totaling over 1 GB of space. Is it safe to delete these files or should I keep the newest one of each application in case the application doesn't start at a later date? Sorry for the basic question but since I was in the Mac Basics section.

I've noticed my hard drive space slowly whittling away for no apparent reason. Having done a bit of research on the net, the topic of cache files often come up, allegedly deleting htem clears up a lot of space and allows your mac to run much faster. Is it safe to do this? I have onyx for mac, which options under cleaning do people usually check when using it? I am running snow leopard 10.6.2

Basically a repeat of this question : "Now that my tv shows are in the cloud, is it safe to delete them from my hard drive to make more room? Theoretically, I can redownload them if needed, or is it best to have a physicsl backup of them?" The answer they got was : "iCloud is still in Beta. I would recommend that you try with one show, make a copy of it and then try out. But wait until iCloud and Lion 10.7.2 is out." However, this was in august 2011. I was wondering if iCloud is out of beta yet (i don't recall the word beta being written next to it any of the times i've seen it) and it would now be safe to do so. I'm running out of room on my hard drive so i was considering getting a time capsule to store new films, but if i can just delete tv shows my problem will be sovled for quite a while.

What version of Adobe Acrobat [not reader] would I need so I could run it on a G4 1.25 ghz MDD running 10.4.11, that would also run on 10.5, in case I install that? I am going to look for some legitimate, used software, but want to buy the right version. Version 6 says it will requires 10.2.2. Would that run on 4, and maybe 5?

I have bought Adobe Creative Suite 5 recently. It contains Acrobat Pro 9, instead of the newly released version X. That's okay with me, although I was a little disappointed when us CS5 buyers couldn't get a discount on Acrobat Pro X. No, the reason I'm calling out is because Acrobat's new icon is perfectly in line with the icons of the style of the main CS5 applications. They look like little books, while the Acrobat Pro 9 icon still has that flat style of CS4. Could somebody send me the new Acrobat icon? Doing so would be really simple. Copying and pasting the icon onto an empty folder, zipping said folder and uploading the resulting ZIP file.

how to prevent Acrobat (Professional 8) from asking to be the default PDF reader EVERYTIME it starts? You'd think there would be a preference setting somewhere but no.

I recently check my 150 GB hard drive and noticed that I only have 10 GTB left. While going through my files to check what I don't need or want, I noticed that I have a folder called Previous Systems. Inside this folder are two other folders with dates for names. Each folder has approximately 20 GB for a total of 40 GB. Can I simply toss this folder? It does not seem to do anything. The folder must have been created from a backup some time ago. I don't recall doing that.

I'm trying to get a copy of Acrobat Pro (CS3 version--I think it's 8) to stop crashing on an Intel iMac and I cannot for the life of me figure out where the corrupt pref is.
The crashes started after upgrading to 10.5, and happen about 20 seconds after opening it, regardless of what you're doing; the report appears to point to the update checker causing the crash, which would make sense based on the timing.
Now, if I create a clean account on the same machine, Acrobat runs fine, so it's got to be a pref issue of some sort. The Adobe Updater run manually also works, as do the other CS3 apps installed. I did also try completely reinstalling CS3, which didn't fix it.
Thing is, I've searched for every single user pref with "Adobe" or "Acrobat" in the filename, visible or invisible, folders and files both, and deleted ALL of them, regardless of the app they specify. Caches, plists, user Library application support files (not the root /Library ones, of course), and even after a restart it STILL crashes in exactly the same way.

How would one go about editing a PDF. Also, if I edit it, I don't want anyone to be able to "undo" my changes and reveal the old content. It would also be nice if possible, if there is a way to "lock" the file such that it cannot be edited further.

My annual accounts are due and I'm scanning all of my receipts. I have obviously put in scanner so they tessellate and fit neatly; only I keep coming across some that are in-correct in their dates (I've arranged the folders by months). I scan the mentioned receipt/receipts then I want to move them so they fit into a page with space and tessellate with the others (wasteful and not an option to have pages with only one receipt). Already tried using the 'touch up object tool' to try to move it; which looks like will work but image is behind/ disappears. It has gotta be possible to move things onto a page, does not have capabilities/ made for purpose of photoshop but only want to move something onto a page-not unreasonable request .

I recently purchased and installed Adobe CS2. With Acrobat Professional comes a Safari plugin that automatically views PDFs in the browser. However, I much prefer the standard Tiger PDF viewer as Acrobat takes forever to load. I've looked everywhere and can't figure out how to disable this feature.
