View 8 RepliesI just watched this: [URL] and really liked the idea (having a hard drive dock, and just a lot of OEM drives with all your stuff). I live in the UK, and Maplin sells some SATA docks, but they're all USB. Ao you know of any firewire 800 solutions? (Google didn't help) or any alternatives?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm currently looking into online backup solutons for my macbook. I intend to keep backups of all my photo's and home movies.
I've looked into and trialed the following
Mozy - The upload to the web feature worked fine, but when i tried to restore a few files it took ages. It took nearly 4 hours to download a 700mb file which had uploaded in less than 10 minutes. My broadband is cable and is 10mb so i am able to achieve a download speed of around 1mb's
JungleDisk - I really really wanted to try this as the pricing was great and the service looked fantastic. However, seeing as i'm in the UK and don't have a credit card i am unable to persue this any further. FOr some reason Amazon S3 don't accept visa debit cards.
Dropbox - I love this service, however I fully understand that this is a syncing service and not a backup service. If i was able to only upload documents and not have them automatically download to my other machine's or work machine then that would be great.
In what's become a yearly release, I have officially released the fifth edition of the Apple Enterprise Backup Solutions paper. If you are unfamiliar with the document, it is a free paper that will help you find the right backup solution for your environment, outlining various backup techniques, software solutions and data consolidation solutions. This document has been referenced in numerous webcasts and online publications. If you've read the previous releases, much of this will seem similar. The main update in this paper is a complete review of the PresSTORE 3 solution. You can find a link to the document and its mirror at: [URL]

Do any of you use Wuala ? What do you think of it?
It's time for me to look into serious back up solutions for a Mac Pro dual boot. I had good backup solutions in the past, but this set up is different. I now have two Mac drives (system and storage), the Windows partition on Mac system drive, and one Windows storage drive (total 3 physical, 4 virtual). Physical system drive is 240GB split down the middle. Mac storage drive is 1TB, and XP storage drive is 500MB. I keep reading about robotic backup systems like Drobo, but I'm wondering what the advantages are over simply getting matched drives and mirroring them. (Other than the fact that I don't have to worry about drive sizes I mean).
It seems to me the big selling point on these gadgets is the "set it and forget it" aspect. I've used mirrored drives in the past, and don't recall ever having to pay any attention to them, no extra software settings. Share them, don't share them, whatever. That, and they update on the fly. Every time I write to the primary drive, the redundant drive is instantly updated to match it. What am I not getting? These "robotic" backups just seem to me to be nothing more than SATA drive racks with a lot of blinking lights I don't really need (I pay attention to my storage capacity. I know when it's getting full long before the lights come on), and software that does stuff the system can already do.
If you have a server, you need a good backup solution. I'd like to invite you all to download a copy of my newest installment of Apple Enterprise Backup Solutions, that includes some great tips and tricks on how to consolidate your data, rotate your media and which software packages and tools may work best in your environment. You can get the latest document on my website at: [URL]. I hope you find it helpful in keeping your data safe!
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo my sister's girlfriend is a professional photographer. Her former consultant get her an SCSI 68-pin connected Sony StorMaster tape drive that backs up her 3 big NAS drives with all her work via EMC Retrospect. This was on a PowerMac G5 tower with an SCSI 68-pin card installed. She's moving and has tasked me with getting it all up and running again at her new place since she's fallen out with the old consultant (who did some weird, weird stuff with their network - why are there 3 switches for the NAS? Why does the Airport run through two of them? WTF?) and got an iMac 27" i7.
Now, problem is, obviously that her i7 has no way of plugging into that SCSI tape drive. She's been using her G5 purely to run Retrospect which is a waste of space and energy. Plus she's moving to a much smaller space, so I really, really want to get it out of there. So here's the thing - I CANNOT find a 68-pin SCSI to USB adapter other than one by Ratoc, which apparently only lets the tape drive function in "mass storage mode" which doesn't really tell me if it will work with Retrospect or not. Is there another solution to keep the current tape drive and plug it into the iMac?
I'd like to find a good file tagging solution for OS X and wondered if folks had suggestions. There are a bunch of these applications out there. I'll list a couple here to get the discussion going. There's:

I have a MBP and a Time Capsule, but I also am considering an online backup service (in case of theft).
I would look at Mobile Me but I have circa 50GB of photo's and video's to back up and so there is not enough space.
I have had a look at IDrive which gives 150GB for $5 a month however i'm not sure whether it would affect Time Capsule as it also appears to back up files that have changed.
So i dont have an external hd, but i want to clean install SL. Would it be a good idea to sign up for a free trial for an online storage site, do the backup, clean install sl, and then put my stuff back on and then cancel the trial? Would this work or is there some hidden bs i am missing. i dont want my card charged and it sayd 15 day trial.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an online backup service at around $5 a month, where I can backup my Aperture library (50+ GB).So far I've tried these - and I don't like them...Mozy: It's all good, until restore. Then it sucks.Backblaze: Exclusion-based backup. Really cumbersome to exclude all folders on my Mac when I only need Aperture library to be backed up...iDrive: Bandwidth throttling doesn't work, they call it "auto-pause" and even while set to 25%, it still uploads with all my ADSL connection can do - making surfing terrible.
Keepit: No bandwidth throttle at all. Crashplan: Too much "in the background" - no menubar icon or anything else to keep an eye on. The app doesn't feel Mac native at all, I guess it's in java (I can live with it, but it makes me feel like they only do a Mac version so they can say "Mac's supported"). Carbonite: I've heard it's pretty bad, so I haven't tested it yet.So far Crashplan is my preferred choice but it's not one I'm happy with. I'll have to see how it does with a 50gb backup/restore process first though,
How do I use another browser besides Safari? I have not been able to access my online bank account and the bank tells me that it is a Safari issue that the Mac people have been working on. I recently upgraded to Lion.

I was looking at the iDrive pro package which is $4.95 a month for 150gb.
Are there any options that allow a one touch whole HD backup?
What does anyone think of Backblaze for online backup? Currently running Lion on a Mac Mini, & backing up regularly to an external drive, but if something happens at home. From what I see about Backblaze, the fact that they're very Mac-oriented is very inciting! (Former Mac people they say!) So, assuming that an online / offsite backup is a good idea - is Backblaze the way to go? Or one of the others?

Anyone else here use Ally Bank in Safari? The purple bar winds up blocking account information and looks even more out of "alignment" on the account screens once logged in. When I adjust the size using the + and - adjustments, other page elements appear wrong. I have the most updated version of Safari (4.0.4) and OS X 10.6.2 on my iMac. (1680 X 1050) [URL].

I got my mail accounts set-up on Mail 5.2 and it's working properly in that I can send and receive mail from three different IMAP accounts. The only problem is that sent mail items are not showing up when I login online to access my mail. I would like everything on my desktop mail account to be exactly the same as what I see online as far as read messages, unread messages and of course, the sent items that I have sent should be logged on the original mail account as well as on my computer.Â
I have already enabled "store sent messages on the server."

Does anyone have any recommendations on an online backup service. I do have a backup external drive that backups my iMac but I am really thinking about paying for an online service. I think I will feel more secure knowing that if something happens to my computer all my data is replaceable.
View 2 Replies View RelatedBeen trying different online backup programs, but hit a glitch when installing programs.SafeCopy gives me an - Install Failed - The Installer could not write the receipt for "safecopyPostflight".I also get a could not write Receipt Error, when I try to install Carbonite.I called Tech Support for both companies, they had others that had same problems, but other than wipe the drive and start with a fresh OS X install, offered no solution.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving a Time machine backup is all good and such - but it's all in one location, so if something like a fire were to strike at home.. Well, both copies would be gone. So I'm looking for a solution to backup my large iPhoto library - I've searched on this forum and on Google and didn't really come up with a solution.. Anyone have any ideas? I'm aware the inital backup will take forever, but it'll be much quicker afterwards..
Price isn't an issue - but rather, if I need to retrive my data, I don't want to be paying out of the nose..
I am searching for a solution that automatically takes incremental backups of my data, so that I stay assured of data stored at the secured data centers without having worry of loosing it. I was thinking about online backup. Will that be reliable?
