OS X :: Backup IPhoto Library To Online Solution?
Jun 6, 2009
Having a Time machine backup is all good and such - but it's all in one location, so if something like a fire were to strike at home.. Well, both copies would be gone. So I'm looking for a solution to backup my large iPhoto library - I've searched on this forum and on Google and didn't really come up with a solution.. Anyone have any ideas? I'm aware the inital backup will take forever, but it'll be much quicker afterwards..
Price isn't an issue - but rather, if I need to retrive my data, I don't want to be paying out of the nose..

I recently re-install osx 10.5 on my MacBook. When installing, I selected the backup option. I can find all my files, except my photos from iphoto. Fair sure I've searched all folders, still cant find.

I am using an Intel MacBook 2.4 Mhz 2Gb RAM and OS 10.6.5. Time Machine has never successfully backed-up so I have been using Backup which works fine. However I now want to restore just a couple of photos from my iphoto library. Is this possible because it only seems to offer the option of restoring the whole library?

After I had a full backup to iomega external hard drive I wanted to see photos in iPhoto library by using Time Machine. I can see the iPhoto Library icon on Time Machine, but when I click on an icon it does not open the folder and I can't see the pictures stored on iomega external hard drive. All other backed up documents I can see and restore if I need it.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), iomega external hard drive 1TB

My entire iPhoto Library is gone, inaccessible, doesn't show up in finder. I tried to restore my last Time Machine back up but it says that I don't have enough space on my startup disk. In order to create space I deleted everything nonessential and moved all of my essential folders such as documents, photos, videos, everything, etc. to my external drive, then deleted them from my hard drive. I emptied the trash to make sure that everything was wiped.
I tried to do the Time Machine back up of my iPhoto Library again and is still says I don't have enough space. I looked at my storage under About this Mac, and it says that 120.35 GB of my current computer storage are photos, however, I don't have ANY photos on my hard drive at all. I don't know what to do because I can't delete applications and there is literally nothing else I can delete from my computer, so I don't understand how 135 GBs of storage is being used up. Â
Could there be somewhere my photos are hiding? I just don't understand why my library got deleted in the first place for that matter.
Info:
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have experienced a problem after I updated to SL last night.I made a fresh install of both SL and iLife 09 on my mbp unibody late 2008.
Afterwards, I replaced the my fresh iphoto library simply with my old iphoto 09library from time machine (no migration tool, only copy pasts).
But now I recognized a problem that I see no iphoto library in my Desktop and Screensaver Menu in control panel. I cant set iphoto library photos as screensaver cause I cant see them
Does anyone have a solution for it? or does anybody face the same issue?

I'm having a think about my current backup solution as i've recently got into photography and dont want to loose any of my images. I have a 24" imac with a 640GB Hard drive. I do a Bootable Carbon Copy Clone of this drive after i import any new photos or make any drastic changes to any of my library's to a 320GB WD Passport and take it to my parents. Then connected to a airport extreme i have 2 WD Mybook hard drives. Drive A is 1TB and holds all my master RAW images that are on my imac's HD. It also holds things like personal movies and any other documents that are on the imac. The only thing that it holds that are not backed up anywhere are Movies or TV shows.
Also connected to the AE is a 640GB WD Mybook (Drive B) this is purely for time machine backups. The only issue i can see so far is that the WD passport drive is only 320GB so once my imac drive fills up past the 320GB mark i wont be able to do a CCC backup. I'm currently using about 230GB on my imac so have a little time before i need to upgrade that drive. Now, the imac is in our dining room and my wife does NOT want drives hanging off the imac cluttering the place up, hence the reason why there connected to the AEBS and hidden away in a cupboard... Can anyone suggest any improvements that need to be made to my setup?

How do you keep all of your data safe? Do you rely solely on Time Machine or do use other 3rd party services like Mozy or JungleDisk?
I am looking for a total backup solution for both OS X and my Windows Boot Camp partition. For me, Time Machine is not enough. I want a way to protect against total hard drive failure, so if my hard drive fails I can boot from an external drive (for both Windows and Mac). What's would be my best backup solution?

I have a Mac Book Pro. Due to the total amount of files and data, I keep my media files on an external drive connected via USB to my Airport AEBS. Of course, I connect wirelessly to the AEBS.I use Time Machine to back up my computer onto an second external drive also connected to my AEBS in the same fashion. However, TM does not allow me to choose the files or folders from the external AEBS drive containing all of my media files to also incrementally back them up using Time Machine. It should. I wish it would. Why won't it? Can I make it work that way? If so, how? TM is the best incremental backup program I've seen. I really want to back up my media that way. But I don't want to tether my laptop by connecting an external drive directly to it, and I don't have the space to store my media files directly on my laptop.

I have a MBP and a Time Capsule, but I also am considering an online backup service (in case of theft).
I would look at Mobile Me but I have circa 50GB of photo's and video's to back up and so there is not enough space.
I have had a look at IDrive which gives 150GB for $5 a month however i'm not sure whether it would affect Time Capsule as it also appears to back up files that have changed.

I'm looking for an online backup service at around $5 a month, where I can backup my Aperture library (50+ GB).So far I've tried these - and I don't like them...Mozy: It's all good, until restore. Then it sucks.Backblaze: Exclusion-based backup. Really cumbersome to exclude all folders on my Mac when I only need Aperture library to be backed up...iDrive: Bandwidth throttling doesn't work, they call it "auto-pause" and even while set to 25%, it still uploads with all my ADSL connection can do - making surfing terrible.
Keepit: No bandwidth throttle at all. Crashplan: Too much "in the background" - no menubar icon or anything else to keep an eye on. The app doesn't feel Mac native at all, I guess it's in java (I can live with it, but it makes me feel like they only do a Mac version so they can say "Mac's supported"). Carbonite: I've heard it's pretty bad, so I haven't tested it yet.So far Crashplan is my preferred choice but it's not one I'm happy with. I'll have to see how it does with a 50gb backup/restore process first though,

I have about 20 hours of low res digicam videos sitting in iphoto. When I launch Imovie, it loads all 20 hours without asking then proceeds to quit unexpectedly if I try to do anything. Is there a way to prevent iphoto from loading all of them without deleting the videos from my iPhoto library? I have about a 30 minute video I would like to edit I'm frustrated. How about removing all those clips except the ones I care about? Can I do that? (after waiting 20-30 minutes for them to load)

I suddenly cannot access the several thousand photos in my iPhoto Library. I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete. I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?

Thought I'd start this thread for people to discover/add any info they have on what iPhoto Faces is doing behind the scenes to help with troubleshooting, since Apple doesn't have any preferences for Faces in the iPhoto GUI. This is only for people who like to understand what is happening behind the scenes. Please note this is not for everyone and anytime you do anything to your iPhoto library you risk corruption and should have a backup copy. What I've noticed so far:
- iPhoto scans the library the first time it opens, and creates 2 faces .db files with the iPhoto Library:
face_blob.db
face.db
- iPhoto creates Faces thumbnails files and places them in the iPhoto Library/Data folder along with the other thumbnails it creates................

I'm currently looking into online backup solutons for my macbook. I intend to keep backups of all my photo's and home movies.
I've looked into and trialed the following
Mozy - The upload to the web feature worked fine, but when i tried to restore a few files it took ages. It took nearly 4 hours to download a 700mb file which had uploaded in less than 10 minutes. My broadband is cable and is 10mb so i am able to achieve a download speed of around 1mb's
JungleDisk - I really really wanted to try this as the pricing was great and the service looked fantastic. However, seeing as i'm in the UK and don't have a credit card i am unable to persue this any further. FOr some reason Amazon S3 don't accept visa debit cards.
Dropbox - I love this service, however I fully understand that this is a syncing service and not a backup service. If i was able to only upload documents and not have them automatically download to my other machine's or work machine then that would be great.

Just wondering if many people use online hard drive back-ups, and if so which one?
I was looking at the iDrive pro package which is $4.95 a month for 150gb.
Are there any options that allow a one touch whole HD backup?

What does anyone think of Backblaze for online backup? Currently running Lion on a Mac Mini, & backing up regularly to an external drive, but if something happens at home. From what I see about Backblaze, the fact that they're very Mac-oriented is very inciting! (Former Mac people they say!) So, assuming that an online / offsite backup is a good idea - is Backblaze the way to go? Or one of the others?

I am transferring info from an iBook G4 running Tiger to a MacBook running Snow Leopard. Everything is going well, except for my ability to transfer the iPhoto library. I have mounted the iBook to the MacBook via Firewire. When I transferred my iPhoto library from my MB to my new MBP, it was easy: all I had to do was drag over "iPhoto Library" from User>Pictures>iPhoto Library But it isn't set up the same way on the iBook: in User>Pictures, "iPhoto Library" is a folder instead of a small iPhoto icon (which you would need to right-click on to see its contents). When I copied the contents of the folder into "iPhoto Library" on the new MacBook, it didn't maintain all of the organization (eg. the albums). Is there any way to do this so that iPhoto will keep the organization of the photo library on the new MacBook, or am I destined to reorganize my thousands of photos into albums again? Please keep in mind that the MacBook is being set up as a new computer, and I am copying over the files/docs/music/photos that she wants to keep from the iBook. I am not using Migration Assistant.
