I open After Effects, Cinema 4D and when I open Illsutrator the computer gets really slow. I mean, I have itunes and photoshop open and it take like 5 seconds or more to open Safari. The dock does not open, is like if I was using all teh computer resouces but I can not really isolate where. I believe is Illustrator but I mean... I have 10GB of ram!!! and I am not using anything heavy in Illsutrator, probably 3MB at the most files.

I installed several programs on my Macbook unibody. As you know it comes with 2Gigs of Ram. My surprise and frustration is with running the Office 08 for Mac, specifically, Powerpoint. It has been a struggle and I use Powerpoint a lot for presentations. Everything takes forever, it starts slow and it takes 30 seconds to save everything. On the other other hand, other memory-consuming programs that I installed, like Adobe CS4 including Photoshop, run fine on the same 2 Gigs of Ram. You'd think that Photoshop would run slower than Powerpoint. But that is not the case with my Macbook. And I did not think Powerpoint was such a memory-hungry program.

I'm looking for Illustrator CS3 (not CS4), but can't seem to find it anywhere. I've done lots of googling, and have even ventured to torrent sites to try and find a torrent with the original trial installation files. All I've found is 3+ Gb files containing more than one app, and it would take an age to download that.

How many others are having issues with their applications opening up much, much slower (example Bento taking a min as compared to seconds before applying the patch) since the last OSX Security Update.

I am running illustrator CS4 on my macbook pro, and I have it connected to another screen. I can't figure out how to move the workspace to my second screen. I can drag my artboard window over, but I want all my toolbars and everything over there as well.

I need to find a better download management application than Speed Download. Whenever I run speed, and download more than one file at a time, my memory usage skyrockets and maxes out. System runs VERY sluggish, and i basically can't use my MBP until downloads are done.

Are you using the Mac or Windows version, (via Bootcamp/Fusion)? Which version is better to buy, Mac or Windows? If you read in the adobe user forums it seems a lot of Mac users buy Adobe Suites in the Windows version and run it via Bootcamp? Or, am I mistaken? I'm about to order CS4 Design Premium and I want to make sure I order what's easiest to learn and best to use.

I made something in Illustrator, neglected to embed the link using the Links panel, and then deleted the link. Everything shows up fine in Acrobat and the Illustrator file is huge, indicative that the links are actually in the Illustrator file. I can place it into a new Illustrator document and everything shows up just fine, but I can't edit it. How do I extract the links from this Illustrator file and/or relink them to the one that is in the .ai itself?

I'm struggling already whole with trying to copy and paste a excel diagram from excel 2008 to adobe illustrator CS3. Now I found out on the microsoft homepage, that this is a known problem and also in several forums people where struggling with this. Microsoft suggests to copy something from illustrator into excel and afterwards it should also work the other way around. This is definitely not the case. I really need to solve this issue. Does somebody know if there is another solution, or to whom one could contact, or if a update which could solve this problem is in the pipeline?

I draw alot of car graphic designs, the eps's of the outlines are drawn to scale, but illustrator wont open them. I think this due to car outlines being 1:1 scale. Is there anyway to open a eps where the artwork is bigger than the artboard (if the artboard is set to max, if there is a max?) in illustrator?

Was wondering if keeping activity monitor running will slow down the system overall?

I have an external USB drive attached to my iMac. I've noticed that whenever there's heavy read/write activity on the drive (such as un-raring a large file or transcoding a video that's stored there), my whole system feels sluggish.

So I have a Mac Pro, quad core xeon with 12 GB of RAM.
I have noticed that when I watch videos, usually from YouTube but elsewhere also, the video is very choppy and the overally computer performance becomes laggy. I thought it was Flash, so I deleted flash and switched my youtube preferences to HTML 5. No change.
So I bust out activity monitor, and it doesn't seem to be a CPU issue, but I note that the VM size is 200-400 GB. That seems excessive. I've about 80 GB available free space on my startup drive; I can move some stuff to another drive to create more free space if that's the issue. But is that much VM normal in 10.7? It seems like a lot.

My wife has a Macbook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Mid 2007) that has become painfully slow. We brought it into the Apple store just before her Apple Care expired and they replaced her hard drive, as they said there were some issues with it. I maxed out her RAM last night to 2GB (and yes, the machine is recognizing the RAM just fine). I also upgraded to Snow Leopard this morning. Other than that, there hasn't been any work done to the computer. She uses it for very low intensity things and doesn't do much more than surf the internet and load photos into iPhoto. That said, the HD only has about 5GB of free space. Now I know it is nearly impossible to diagnose any problems with the machine through a message board like this, but I am wondering if anyone can offer any insight into the most common reasons a not-too-old computer with a new HD, 2GB of RAM, and the most recent OS would be incredibly slow.
I keep her Activity Monitor open in the dock so she can see how much of her memory is being used, and it's kind of interesting to see. Upon start up (with the new memory installed) about 3/4 of it is free. After opening just about any program it shoots down to about half free, and similarly, upon opening another program (it doesn't seem to matter which one) she has about 1/4 of her memory free. Of course, closing down the programs free up some of the memory, but it doesn't seem to get back to that 3/4 that were there upon start up. I usually have a decent grasp on what is going on with a computer, but when it comes to something like this I don't really know where to turn (especially without Apple Care to eat the cost of a fix). So, anyone have any thoughts on what I should do to get the machine running at a relatively quick pace again?

Her laptop is running terribly slow. She uses this computer for iTunes/iPod and running Safari and Word...not much else. Not sure why she would be having any problems. Hardrive space isn't a problem, as there is about 10G availableThe computer boots VERY slow...it takes at least 5 minutes. Once running, launching any application takes much longer than it should. Surfing the net also is very spotty. A page will load, then for no reason, the spinning beach ball (SBB) pops up and freezes the computer for 30 seconds to a minute. This happens the entire time online for any page...even after the page is fully loaded the computer continues to have the SBB appear every few minutes. This issue is not isolated to Safari...it seems the entire OS is lagging horribly. I tried running Disk Utility, which couldn't even finish. After spending 10+ minutes with the progress bar not moving, I gave up.

I figured I found the perfect place to talk about my mac book pro. I have a mac Book Pro 15 inch 2 years old. I decided to use boot camp for the first time the other day and run windows vista. I noticed that though it ran perfect on here I felt that something wasn't right with the dual boot OS. I decided to erase and bring my harddrive back to normal. After I did that I feel like my Mac runs slow. I was thinking if it doesn't get better I might have to do a clean install.

ssh login from my 10.6.2 mac to a linux system is extremely slow -- about a minute to get the login prompts. In comparison, ssh login to the same linux machine from putty.exe on Windows XP is almost instantaneous. I have tried adjusting the parameters on both client and host, without much improvement. However, the "1" protocol level seems a little faster. I have setup the keys ("2" level), and that works (without need for pasword), but is still very slow.
I installed putty from macports onto the mac. I got it to work using the "1" protocol level, but it is just as slow as from the terminal command line. All of the above tests were done on a local network with addresses like 192.168.0.102, so I don't think DNS is a factor.

My new i5 iMac has been really slow after I get out of its screensaver or take it out of sleep. Even if its on the screensaver for a minute, moving the mouse causes it to freeze and try to load the desktop. This takes about a minute before my computer is fully functional again. Also, I don't know if this is just me thinking this or if its actually a problem, but the computer seems a lot slower than my previous, a 24" 3.06Ghz iMac.
Another thing, the fans seem to spin a lot more with this computer. Watching a YouTube or Hulu video makes the fans spin a ton. I've never had that happen with a Mac before. The computer also gets literally too hot to touch. Anybody else have this?
Also, on a (kind of) unrelated note, Windows performance with this is horrible. I've tried Windows 7 and Vista, and both run... adequately. The fans also spin a ton in Vista (what I currently have installed due to there being no 27" drivers for 7 yet).

Everything is fine and great with my iMac 27 except for the fact that logging out and rebooting takes ages. I've already disconnected all 3rd party USB devices and logout/reboot times are still close to ~3 minutes.

grey Apple screen on my Mac Pro. If I unplug my external hard drive (MyBook 1TB, formatted HSF, USB) it takes 15 seconds. From the Apple logo it takes another 20-30 seconds to fully load OS X. I really don't want to unplug my external drive every time I restart.

I have a MacBook Pro 17 inches (early 2009) with 2.8 GHz C2D and 4GB RAM on it. My OS is 10.6.4 and have all the latest updates installed. I have used this computer for 10 months and now it becomes so slow. I did all the stuffs that may help to speed it up (repair disk permission, repair disk, uninstall unnecessary software, only one user account, get rid of startup items), but none of them seems to work. I even went to the genius bar, but the genius there said there is nothing they can do. They suggested me to upgrade the memory to 8 gig. It will cost me at least 300 bucks to do that!
Don't want to invest that much on a old MacBook Pro. But the thing is, I have a lot of friends using MacBook that has only 1 or 2 gig memory but their computers are still way faster than mine. They can open a lot of programs at the same time but I cannot. If I do, the computer gonna be really sluggish, and sometimes crash. I also don't think it is the problem of the free space on my hard drive since I have a 500GB hard drive and 80GB free space on it. I have already tried to reinstall the system and restore it using time machine backup.
