Jun 28, 2012How do you make the exclude file option on zip, or unzip, work for dotted files? For example,
zip -r foo ~/foo/ -x *.txt
will zip all files in ~/foo/ that do not have the extension txt. But this doesn't work for "hidden" files, those that start with ".", like ".txt". So,
zip -r foo ~/foo/ -x /.txt
still gets all the .txt files in foo zipped up, not excluded.
unzip foo -x /.txt
has the same problem: it happily includes any .txt files in foo.zip in the unzipping

Aug 2, 2008What all gets excluded from a Time Machine backup when you specify 'Exclude All System Files' when selecting to exclude the 'System' folder?? Does this include all of the invisible unix folders? I don't see much reason to back that up since I can always reinstall from CD.

Dec 4, 2014I have recently upgraded to 10.10 (fresh install and only migrated network settings and documents). I was setting up my Time Machine and choosing which folders to exclude from the backup when suddenly when I clicked on the plus button to add another directory the finder window shows all the folders as greyed out and unable to be selected. This applies to ALL files on the hard drive. Screen shot attached. I have performed a repair permissions and still a problem. Also performed a repair on the disk to and no change. Needless to say I have performed a reboot as well.

ITunes :: Exclude Videos From Music Library?
May 28, 2012Is there perhaps a setting to tweak that would prevent iTunes from listing videos (like music videos some albums include) alongside the music library? I usually uncheck them so they don't play after an album runs through but my OCD would much prefer they not even be listed in the same list. I don't want to remove them from my entire iTunes library but would prefer them only being visible within the movies tab.

Dec 11, 2007I just set up Time Machine, and in order to make my backups efficient, I'm trying to think what kind of stuff to exclude. I want a full, working backup, so that if I needed to I could have a complete, bootable restore in less than an hour. With that in mind, here's what I excluded so far:
1) My 2nd external hard drive. It's filled with videos and wouldn't fit anyway. I figure if that drive goes down I'll recover what I can from it and re-rip the rest.
2) My downloads folder. I just download so much crap here that I usually throw away instantly or else move. Plus the downloads folder usually has 2 copies of everything: compressed and uncompressed. Even worse, if the download is a .tar.gz, it has 3 copies of the file.
3) My VMWare images folder. Time machine will back this sucker up every hour that I'm using one of the virtual machines (due to the fact that the guest OS is storing virtual memory in the image file), which would completely kill my ability to go "back in time" since it would fill up my drive very quickly.
4) Anything that's already version controlled elsewhere. I have all my code in a subversion repository on another server, so I don't see a point in backing that up. The backup would just be cluttered anyway.

Oct 28, 2010So I deleted the Plist files because iTunes would constantly crash when it was "processing" the TV show I was downloading after it reached 100% on the download. SO very annoying. Didn't realize deleting the Plist files also deletes all of the preferences and just about everything else except the music, video, etc. files themselves. So I have all of my iTunes files on my external hard drive where they have always been, but how do I point iTunes to it?
I vaguely remember that I have to open iTunes while holding down some key? Is that right? Which key(s) again?

Feb 2, 2009I have the vast majority of my iTunes library on a NAS device. When I first got my MBP I set the library's location to the folder that I had moved off one of the desktops to the NAS. Everything works fine.
However, it seems that the library location will reset itself to the local location on the MBP (possibly whenever I run iTunes when I'm not on this network). So, if I add files to the iTunes when I'm not on this network, they get placed into the local library.

For some weird reason iTunes starts to add every file twice. And I don't mean that it just keep the original, it actually adds the file two times in the iTunes Music folder.
I just added 300 Beatles Songs but now it added every single song twice...I have 600 songs now. This happened now and then before and its REALLY annoying. Especially when I need to delete every single file manually. The show duplicates just shows both files but I still need to highlight every 2nd file and then delete it.

The only problem now is that the most inane file types show up there, such as iChat files and prefPanes, so I was wondering if anybody knew of script that would allow for you to exclude those doc types from showing up in recent documents.

In particular, it requires my consent for accessing our wifi home printer (not a problem, I've approved that) but then also for the printer at her school. Other than turning off controls for a day to allow her to get authorized for whatever printers they have at the school, and hoping that the authorization will last, is there a way to exclude printing from the parental controls in the first place?

Oct 18, 2010I've just discovered something in my Library, and I don't know whether I have a problem, or if I should care . . . ;^)
I have 16 songs showing in iTunes 10.0.1 from a 2-disk release called "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" - all songs play fine, and I have song and CD numbers for all songs, and each song has the box "Part of a compilation" checked.
In my main file system (same level as "Applications") is a folder called "iTunes Music", and in that is "Compilations" - further down inside that is "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" but it only has 11 of the 16 songs.[/iTunes Music/Compilations/Cafe del Mar Vol 13]
At the same level as "Compilations" is "iTunes Song Files" and in that is "Music" and inside that is another "Compilations" folder, and another "Cafe del Mar Vol 13" folder. This only has 13 of the 16 songs, and one is a duplicate. [/iTunes Music/iTunes Song Files/Music/Compilations/Cafe del Mar Vol 13]
Which of these is the "correct" Compilations folder? If I compare the files in each folder, I have all 16 songs that are displayed in iTunes, just not all in one folder. Should I be worried?
And should I bother with trying to "fix" either of these folders so they have the correct collection of 16 songs? If I move files around, will iTunes get confused?
Other possibly useful bits of info: 1) I have almost 10,000 songs; 2) I use the iVolume app to set the same playback volume level; and 3) all songs have been synching fine with my iPod Touch.

Jan 17, 2009I'm trying to bring all my music files from my Windows computer so I copied all my music files from my Windows computer to my external hard drive, and then copied from the external hard drive to my iTunes music folder in my new iMac. When I compared the info between my iTunes music folder, and the music files on my external hard drive, the iTunes music folder had more files. By looking through the files it looks like two extra files were added to each album folder....a "folder.jpg" file and a "AlbumArtSmall.jpg" file was created. I know that these are only pic files, but I didn't have those files when all my music files were on my Windows machine, how come they show up now? Are those two files necessary? Can I just delete those?
