Applications :: Firefox Unusable - 90 Percent CPU Consumption
Jun 30, 2010
I haven't been using it much after Safari 5 (just because Firefox takes forever to open compared to Chome and Safari) but I think that since 3.6.4 or 3.6.5 it constantly hogs my system using 80%-90% of my CPU according to Activity Monitor. RAM usage is similar to other browsers.
Yeah I know I have an old Mac (Mini Core Duo 1.66) but right now for example Safari 5 with 5 tabs is using 5% and Chome is at 4.5%. I know it's not the extensions because I downloaded the 4.0 beta which disabled most of them (just to test it) and the same thing happened. Btw I'm using 10.6.4.

I have a mac book pro 13" intel core 2 duo running OS 10.6.8, i did an update and is not so unstsble, i cant even open software update to find out a list of updates, most applications try to open but then close and if you do get a program to open it takes ages to do any thing. About the only program that work's is itunes and even thats slow. If i resart the it you have to leave for about half an hour for it to settle down before you can do anything. It was working fine before the update, but truth be told, the spinning beachball was a seen at every clik.

Is there a software to monitor the Bandwidth consumption for Mac.
I use Bandwidth Monitor Pro for Windows and its good. But I guess they do not have it Mac.
Activity Monitor does a good job of showing the current speed and the total amount of data downloaded / uploaded, but thats just good for one session.
I am looking for some software that helps me view this information over a period of time.

No problems with dropped packets.
Conclusion 2: It is the MBP + wireless that is the problem
Now what can I do about it?
I have googled around and found some older threads about problems with wireless with OS 10.6.3 and various ad hoc solutions, but nothing really current.

I desperately seek help from the community as Apple itself doesn't seem to care much. After updating to 10.7.4 my Imac has become unusable. It goes into a loading state just about every 10 minutes at which i can do little more than move the mouse around. I know it is the new update causing this (and not the hardware) because i also have a Bootcamp partition which works totally fine. Does anyone have any advice or solutions? Unfortunately i am currently not in the position to reinstall my system. I have no more space on my external HD to back up everything and am not in the position to purchase a new hard drive. And in my opinion, i shouldn't have to resort to such drastic measures because Apple released such a terrible update.

I use iTunes primarily as a Home Sharing home-base to stream my TV Shows and Movies to Apple TVs in my home. As a result, it (as well as the iMac) are on 24/7 with the exception of a daily scheduled task which quits and reopens iTunes to sync unwatched media to my iOS devices at 4:30AM.
I have noticed several things with iTunes 10.6 which I have documented in other questions here on the forums (long periods of unresponsiveness, the inability to scrub videos), but this issue may be just as significant and could be a root cause in my other problems. This particular question deals with RAM consumption. I have noticed for years that iTunes is a memory hog, so you won't find me shocked there, but what has shocked me is how the amount of RAM iTunes consumes has risen with the amount of RAM I've installed. I currently use an iMac (mid-2010) with a quad i7 and 16GB of RAM.
I have noticed lately that upon opening iTunes 10.6.1 (and 10.6 before it) that iTunes immediately captures about 250MB of RAM. While I have plenty to spare in comparison, I've noticed that the amount of RAM it consumes swells considerably throughout the day. For example, my iTunes is completely idle right now - no devices are connected, no media is streaming or caching, no store purchases are downloading, and iTunes Match/Genius is not actively scanning anything - but my iTunes shows 605MB of RAM. When playing an m4v file converted from mp4 (so we're talking maybe a 200MB media file - not an MKV convert or anything in 1080p), I've noticed iTunes balloon to 900+MB of RAM. If I quit the application and open it again, it immediately snatches up that 250MB or so of RAM, then balloons within minutes.
So while I expect iTunes to consume RAM, as it is a very resource-heavy and busy media center hub, I am surprised by the amount of RAM being consumed here and was wondering if anyone might be able to clarify whether I should consider this a "problem" or just iTunes being iTunes; and if it isn't a problem, are there still any suggestions toward how I could minimize RAM consumption? I realize that I have RAM to spare, but when I get into video conversions, music playback, and work on this computer (all the while my wife is streaming a video across the house on an Apple TV), I do want to make sure I'm not wasting memory on an application that might be ballooning unnecessarily (it is, after all, 6X the consumption of the next app in line).
Just for those who might be wondering what I've already tried, I've worked on several quick fix ideas to help remedy the situation (and hoped they would fix the other issues I've experienced with iTunes 10.6): I've rebuilt the library by opening a new library and importing from my previous iTunes LIbrary file; I've created a new library, dragged any media to it, and tried to play it; I've run iTunes in 32-bit mode. None of these has resolved the issue. I have also attempted to run these files from a new user account (with a new library or with the existing library), and have tried them from an external troubleshooting drive which is also running Lion 10.7.3 and iTunes 10.6.1.

About a month back, I purchased a wireless mighty mouse and tried using it with my 2009 Mac Pro. The lag and tracking were terrible, making it unusable. When connected to my MacBook Air (on the same desk) it worked flawlessly. I assumed at the time there was a problem with the bluetooth on my Mac Pro so I've been meaning to get Apple Support on the case but just haven't got around to it (using the old wired mouse as before).
Now, I'm reading some stories on the peripherals forum that owners of Mac Pro's have issues with lag and tracking with the new Magic Mouse, and some are stating that it's a known problem with the Mac Pro chassis that it doesn't enable adequate bluetooth operation due to all the metal. Is this true? What's your experience using a bluetooth mouse with the Mac Pro?

The messages window is all over the place. I click on a message in the left hand side and nothing happens. Double click on another and I get a totally different message. I've odd blank messages... And when I quit and reopen different messages show. Now I reinstalled it a few times now, and nothing has any effect... any ideas while I wait until mountain lion?? I have a pioneer 111d drive that is in a external enclosure, that I don't use anymore. I would like to put it in my mac pro. How much current do the drives draw when in idle or stand by mode. The only reason I ask. Is because, I have no need for a mac pro with two drives, as of now. I would be adding the second drive just because I can. I would pass on this if I new it was just sitting their wasting energy.

Has anyone else experienced a recurring error stating that the energy consumption of a USB peripheral is too high? I figured it to be one of those no brainer problems, but via process of elimination (plugging and unplugging my keyboard, mouse, and disabling the bluetooth unit) I have been unable to discontinue the message.
Furthermore, after looking through the system profiler, the only usb port that this consuming much of any energy is this isight port but it is still consuming only its allotted 500 mA. I ran the Apple Hardware tests twice and have not discovered any hardware failure. I'm now at a loss with an error message that pops up over the top of the desktop every 30 seconds or so. I'm running 10.6.3 on a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo Imac.

I've noticed that my macbook pro has been using a lot of RAM. I haven't really witnessed a slowdown on my computer b/c of any sort of shortage of RAM but I was just curious if this was typical (since this is my first mac). I have 4 GB of RAM and I often find myself with around 1-1.5 GB of free + inactive RAM. I had a linux system with 3 GB RAM before and it used between 1-1.8 GB of RAM and it seems like this system is using around 2.5-3 GB (active + wired). However, various OS X laptops in the past have functioned really well in the past with 2 GB and even 1 GB of RAM right? Is OS X just putting more processes in my RAM to speed up my system because more RAM is available OR does snow leopard just have high memory consumption?

But it seems this or hiding it will be the only way to go with the new small air. The thing that I find very badly thought out in apple's implementation is that the furthest left icon on the dock (the finder one) becomes the top on when you put it on the left or right and there's no option to reverse the this. Now when you are switching between windows it takes much more time to travel with your mouth near the top and left or right than it would near the bottom for obvious usability reasons. So you end up having the closest to you those icons (minimized ones, stacks) that you will use less often to switch from one to the other, and the ones you will use more often such as the first few ones the furthest up. I can't see how people can work with this kind of set up and I am always amazed how some people manage to keep their dock on the left or right...

Ive had my macbook for about 2 months and its seemed to working just fine. However today while listening to music it decided to lock up and freeze for a good minute before it would unlock and continue playing the music through itunes. It did this a few times so I finally decided to restart the computer. The first time I booted it it froze on the apple logo and the loading circle. I killed it and rebooted, it takes about four to five minutes to get to the desktop picture, and another five to pull up the main menu bar. I am going to let it sit over night and see if it gives me any error messages, however; I still haven't seen the dock at all, and ive let it start for about twenty minutes now. It will usually show the top menu bar and then the mouse will give me the sbod while it slowly loads up the top menu bar, and usually the clock is a good few minutes behind.
I have tried a pram zap, draining the power off the board, checking the sata connection, unplugging the power, and I ran a hardware check at start up and it said everything was ok. I am currently typing on my tank of a toshiba laptop that still works after being dropped multiple times and has been heavily used for a good 3 years. The mac has been completely useless is most work situations. Its a refurbished 2.53ghz 4gb ram 9600m 512mb 15" mbp. I am thinking of reformatting it and hoping it works, and then selling it and using the money for a new toshiba or a custom built desktop, because I just cant deal with the amount of money and time I have lost trying to deal with this thing while I could have been getting work done.

Have a late 09 i7 27" iMac with XP SP3 installed on Bootcamp partition. Even after turning down brightness in BootCamp control panel all the way down, I still feel like I'm staring at the sun. Screen is still way too bright. No such issue in OS X. Is there any Windows app (similar to Shades) that allows further brightness reduction? With brightness as is, Bootcamp is pretty much unusable to me.

I have a unibody Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.3. Everything is up to date but the computer is now on its second hard drive and fresh install of OSX and is still unusable. After the hard drive was replaced, it worked flawlessly for an evening. However, the old symptoms reemerged the next morning. Symptoms: very slow to boot or freezes on gray screen with status circle frozen grey circle with slash through it on boot
once it boots, if it does boot, the beachball constantly spins/freezes... I have literally no software installed on the fresh install and it still does it when attempting to boot in safe mode Also, the hard drive when checked gives the following errors even after I repair them in drive genius (the same errors the old drive reported):
invalid file count
invalid directory count

My Macbook has begun to run incredibly slow, it's taken me almost an hour to post this. Keep seeing the spinning wheel.
Its been like this for about a week and normally doesn't boot, even in safe mode. Appeared to be a gradual thing, was irritating at first but worsened as I took steps to troubleshoot. Initially cleared browsing history and closed programs, to no avail. I then booted in safe mode and the computer remained slow.
At this point the I was unable to shut down without holding the power key, for about a week I've been turning the macbook on and off into disc utility to try and fix it. When booting normally the progress bar usually gets about halfway and then goes nowhere. At one point I could hear dings (messages from my phone coming through) on the laptop but the startup progress bar was stuck at halfway; almost as if it had successfully booted but wasn't showing me.
I've repaired disc/disc permissions and reinstalled OSX. I tried to reinstall OSX a second time and an error came up, disc utility also kept showing my hard drive as unmounted and would take forever to let me click anywhere.
After many failed attempts this eventually allowed me to startup, allbeit slowly (after a particularly fast disc repair)
My last backup was a while ago and now I've managed to boot up, trying to back up now but this isn't working either.
I've downloaded etrecheck ...

Getting fustrated with my Macbook Pro 15''. Could never get battery to last more than 5-6 hours. This is the MAX i can achieve, with great pains to enhance battery life.
Argh, what's wrong with my Macbook Pro?
Check out the amperage drain. At this rate the Macbook Pro wouldn't last more than 5 hours. This is with half brightness, only finder and Chrome open, and the battery recently calibrated.
The amperage drain increases to -1400+ when i have more tabs open, and a few other apps.
However there was this ONE RARE OCCASION, where my Macbook Pro would only drain between -700 to -800 amperage. This was in normal usage and the battery easily lasted closer to 8 hours. But somehow, i can never replicate this anymore!

I'm considering to buy a new iMac (21,5"/nvidia or ati) and I'm wondering if someone has already measured the actual power consumption. In it's environmental paper, Apple documents that it uses less than 2W in sleep mode and 37,5 W with the display off. Did anyone try if this is also measured in real life? I may sound a bit paranoid, but half a year ago I bought a mac mini 2007 at a stock clearance, and I was shocked to find out that just the powerblock plugged in already consumes 8W, the mini itself in standby consumes 11W. Add to that a screen, external speakers and an external disk and the total standby power consumption of the lot is 25W. Terrible.
Besides the energy consumption, I'm also a bit disappointed with the speed of the mini, but that's probably largely due to the low RAM (1GB). So rather than going for the latest mini model, I'd like to go for the power of an iMac. But I would be really happy if someone could confirm the power consumption. Specifically I'm looking for power consumption
- In sleep mode
- While streaming itunes to an airport express, with the display off
(I assume the display goes to sleep automatically when streaming. Right?)
- While in normal, not too heavy operation (eg surfing, mailing & itunes)
