Applications :: Excel 08 - Mean Of Values On Bar Graph
Mar 20, 2009
I'm trying to create a chart on excel 08 that for the following type of data:
A X Y
1 a 4
1 b 5
1 c 8
2 d 4
2 e 7
2 f 6
3 g 4
3 h 7
3 i 2
The graph has column X on the X-axis and Y on the y-axis. Is there a way graph the means of the Y column for each of the groups in column A (1's, 2's, 3's)?
I am working on my thesis data where I have to create a lot of different graphs, all of which have cells where there was no sampling done and thus, no data. I would like to display a symbol or indicator in the graph where there is no data rather than it appearing as a zero value. I do not want to go through after creating the graph and importing it into my word doc and place text boxes with symbols where there is no data.
I need to make a very, very simple line graph. In column A, I have a list of years. In column B, I have the data....numbers that correspond to something in that year. Simple, right? It really couldn't be any less complex. I selected both columns, then I went to create a new line graph, and it created a graph that had the years (from 0-2500 even though the actual range is 1973-2005) on the Y axis, and the data on the X axis. And each column of data was its own series, so I had 2 lines, which, due to the scales, was basically 2 horizontal lines. I removed the extra series (the year series), and was able to get the line to look right. It also put the column B data on the Y axis like I want, but on the X axis, it just counts from 1-33. But I want the years on the X axis. How the hell do I do this? I'm 99% positive Excel 2004 let you set the X axis labels.....did they really remove it in 2008? This seems like something that should be so simple, I shouldn't have to post on a forum to figure out
Does anyone know if you can label axis in excel 2008? I know before SP1 it couldnt be done, just wondering if anyone has come across this in the to SP1? Or it can be done already? Because its pretty useless for me without that feature!
I'm currently trying to create some graphs in Excel, and the data isn't plotting as I would like it to be - not sure if there is something I am doing wrong here or if there is a setting to change. My data goes like this:
Mass (g)Average Period (s) 502.074 752.089 1002.110 1252.111
and I would like mass on the x-axis and average period on the y-axis. However, my graph is placing both values on the y-axis and placing a key beside the graph. The graph and the way I have set out the data are attached below.
cannot find the solution. Im currently working on a simple graph, i.e. year vs population (bar or pie). I would like to show the actual value as labels of the bars/pies..I know this is very simple in windows but I dont know in mac yet.
I am trying to paste link a graph from excel into powerpoint. The paste link option is not available. I also tried to paste link the data from the spreadsheet part of excel to the graph slide type in powerpoint so it can create the graph. The spreadsheet in excel is formula driven so it pastes with ref errors.
I have been trying to plot a simple line graph in excel 2008, using two columns, one with my x values and one with my corresponding Y values. However I cannot do it..it will not let me put the data together but rather has two separate lines for each column...or it will have all points in a straight vertical line...i am really confused on why it is so difficult to make a simple graph
I am searching for a plugin, software or a solution for a situation I have with an Excel/Word Mail Merge.
It's a law firm we specialize in DUI/DWI and Reckless Driving defense. We subscribe to a data collection service that pulls data from various court systems around the state. We are then given this data by jurisdiction. The Excel files we receive come with 2 workbooks in one file for Traffic and Criminal arrests data with name, address, reason for arrest, etc, etc.
What I have been doing is opening each Excel file and copying and pasting into a new worksheet only grabbing the DUI and Reckless driving arrests because tis is all I am needing from the various files. I then save the new workbook and do a mail merge with Word from this newly created workbook.
Now my question is there such a plugin or software that will combine all the Excel files I receive from the Data collection house and then be able to filter out only the DUI and Reckless Driving arrests to a single Excel Workbook?
1. Turned the List Manager on by accident in Excel. Can't figure out how to turn it off now. I am using Excel 2004, and a MAC mouse - so no right-clicking for me...
2. How do I move columns in Excel? I select the column on top, but then try dragging it to a place I'd like it to move, but nothing happens. How do I do that?
3. General Mac Word/Excel question - how do I get to use "Home" and "End" buttons? When I hit them I simply jump somewhere, but not to the beginning or end of the paragraph. I have a MAC keyboard with the "Home" and "End" buttons along with the "Help", "Delete", "Pg Up" and "Pg Dwn" keys - basically it looks a lot like a PC keyboard...
I'm having a small problem in Grapher. I'm supposed to graph a set of data points for a project, which I have done, but when I export the graph as an image, the data points aren't there. I think this might have to do with getting rid of the line connecting them (which I am not supposed to have). Is there a way to keep the data points visible in the exported image?
I have to use computer generated graphs of equations for my calculus class and am in need of a program similar to the Winplot for Windows. Anybody know of any online or free download for Mac?
I have been asked to do a project at work in Excel. I am keeping track of around 7,000 properties all over the United States. My boss wants to know a lot about each one. I am really struggling with the weather part!! I need to somehow pull the temp and if its snowing or raining from the internet into excel. I have all the addresses and zip codes for each property. I was thinking i could write a formula that looks at an RSS feed or website (like yahoo or Google weather) based on the zip code of the address. I could also write the formula that pulls the weather to excel then VLOOKUP the zip. Does anyone have any ideas about this?? I am not sure what to do!!

I'm doing a presentation, and I'd like to include a bar graph of world population trends. I created a bar chart to show the data, but I need the x-axis to be "to scale", asin, have the correct amount of space between the bars. This is it so far: [URL] I need the gap between "Year 1" and "Year 1500" to be 1500 years! Not the same distance between the year 2006 and 2009, if you get what I mean?
I recently purchased my first MAC with Excel for Mac 2008. I am unable to open any files created in it on my PC which has Excel 2003. Apple is of no help. They had assured me of compatibility at purchase citing the new open format. The MAC Excel 08 file won't open on the MAC on which is was created with their Numbers program either.
When I send my .xls files from my Mac (Office 2008) to my boss's Windows machine (Office 2003), he gets an error message when he attempts to open the excel spreadsheet: Excel has encountered an error and must shut down. I've sent files to other computers and not had a problem, and my boss has received other excel files and been able to open them. So it must be something between these two machines/softwares that is affecting it. Any suggestions or ideas? I can add any additional info you need.
I regularly export and save my Safari bookmarks in case I'm ever stuck having to use a different computer.
Now I've just thought - I have several forums where I never have to remember username and password as Safari remembers them for me. It would be very useful to export and back those up too. But, where are they held? My guess is ~/Library/Safari/Form Values. However, when I tried to confirm this by opening in TextEdit, it was in the form of unreadable symbols. Nevertheless, is that the file I need to backup?

A pc person was bashing mac and he was telling me that mac cannot "key hexadecimal or binary values directly into memory bytes". What exactly does this mean? I just finished my second year of college majoring in Computer Information Systems and I have never run across anything like this before. I am not quite sure what the term means and I was hoping somebody could give me some information on it, a google search did not turn up anything. For the record, he has no idea what it means either, he was just repeating something he had read on an anti-mac site.
here's my problem, the 3d graphs in keynote look cool, but the categories at the x axis are unreadable. I want to turn this . I can do this in the 2d version and in the 3D version from powerpoint, but I cant find it in keynote?
In Pages, I need to put a line graph into a document, but I can't get it to look the way I want. Is it possible to put the labels on the y-axis, with the numbers along the x-axis? I have all the data in the graph, but it's just not oriented correctly; and the orientation in important for the class this document is for.
Im creating a Pyramid graph. Im using Microsoft word for macs. I can't seem to enlarge my final product to fit page size. adding a second smart graph (circular arrows). I need the pyramid to be the background and insert the arrows within the pyramid without interfering with the text.
im just wondering is it possible to plot a log graph in the grapher software with a given set of data, and also give an error bar and a best-fit line for it?

I have a new wk 11 MBA 1.6/80g. I've been reading threads on CPU heat and core shutdown. I'm trying to decide whether I need to return my sys for an exchange. Other than heat/shutdown issues my MBA is awesome. Excellent fit and finish, no dead pixels, lid alignment is perfect, etc. When playing HD vid at full screen with my desktop background randomly changing at 5 sec intervals the vid stuttered some and I saw one of my cores intermittently shutting down. However, I learned to stop the stuttering by making my desktop background static. I was thrilled. I could overload the system with two vids playing simultaneously and watch my core temp go to 84/85C with some stuttering on the vids and some intermittent core shutdown. Finally the temp settled to mid 70's. However, I later noticed that I was having periodic core shutdown at 69C. This seems way low for a core to be shutting down.
Ambient temp for my room has consistently been 70F through all of my tests. As I type this message my core usage is very low, temp is 47C. My activity graph shows intermittent periods of both cores having no activity. How can the graph show no periodic activity on each core while I type this? I thought core shutdown was when the core shows no activity for some period of time. Perhaps periods of inactivity which really indicate core shutdown could be different as compared to very low demands on the CPU's? But, am I misreading core shutdown? Is my unit defective? Is excellent fit and finish/build quality the norm for MBA? I don't want to exchange and have dead pixels or a warped lid, etc. I would rather open the unit and mess with thermal paste but I can't see it correcting core shutdown at low temps under heavy load. I purchased this MBA on Saturday.
