View 3 RepliesIs it possible to delete the whole software system from my iMac (version 10.7.3, Lion), and put on everything from my MacBook (version 10.6, including all applications, like the older iTunes version etc.) on it? Not so that I'd see my MacBook on my big screen, but so that the iMac would independently run with 10.6 instead of Lion? The iMac is new and came with Lion.Nothing I work with/on on an every day basis works with Lion and I'm ready to throw the iMac out the window. Everything's fine under 10.6. I just wanted a bigger screen and more space.
I'm sure there are other threads about this when you know where to look, but I don't. I'm not very knowledgeable with computers, but I start to understand that I'm not the only one having a set of problems with Lion.

Basically I installed Snow Leopard but am not happy with it, buggy etc. I want to downgrade to regular Leopard. Is there any way I can do a Time Machine backup now just to save my "user files" and not my system files. Basically I would like to do a system restore but take my current state of user files in Snow Leopard. Is this possible?
View 23 Replies View RelatedI understand the "can't" in downgrading from 10.7 Lion to 10.6 SL, so I'd like to pose a related question.Â
Assume one has an iMac running 10.6.8 and it dies, and that AppleCare has expired. Assume there is a full TimeMachine backup and two current bootable clones (SuperDuper) as well. One orders a new iMac and it comes with 10.7 installed. I take it you can't clone over the old 10.6, or use Time Machine to make the new iMac like the old iMac in so far as data, preferences, bookmarks and so forth are concerened. Am I correct in this understanding?Â
If so, how would one, having 3 current 10.6.8 backups, get the new 10.7 iMac set up with data, photos, user preferences, bookmarks and so forth from the clone or the TimeMachine? Could you even use the backups?

Snow Leopard's Preview can no longer do a search for dollar amounts accurately. This worked just fine in Leopard, but no longer works in Snow Leopard. Go ahead and download a PDF of your most recent bank statement, or any PDF that has a bunch of dollar amounts in it. Then, do a find for one of the dollar amounts. For example, do a find for: 50.00
Preview will no longer find a match for 50.00... instead, it will find any instance of "50" or "00" in your entire PDF file. It uses the decimal point as some sort of a delimiter, and it makes Preview believe that you are doing 2 completely separate searches.
I upgraded my 13" unibody MacBook to Snow Leopard today and immediately began experiencing the same wireless connection problems that everyone has been having (sure wish I'd Googled "wireless network problems snow leopard" before installing... but the reviews were so glowing...) I would like to downgrade to Leopard but am afraid I will lose my files as I did not clone my HD before upgrading. I have Time Machine set to backup my files whenever my external HD is connected, so I connected my HD and did a Time Machine backup before installing SL. I did not clone my HD, which I am now regretting, but I thought that Time Machine backups were safe enough. I have the Leopard disks that came with my MacBook.
What I need to know is how I can reinstall Leopard and then restore my files as they were from the Time Machine backup I made before installing SL. As I have never tried to downgrade before I am worried and am hoping for step-by-step instructions for how I would do this. I am reading that I would need to do a clean install that would erase my hard drive but am not certain that I would then be able to restore my files using the Time Machine backup I made right before installing SL. The situation is complicated by the fact that I already tried to restore from the Time Machine backup I made before I installed SL, naively thinking that this would fix everything, but of course it only restated my files as they were before the SL install without changing the system back to Leopard.
(1) Reinstall Leopard using original disks (assuming it would have to be a clean install, as in erase hard drive and install system, but if not, all the better).
(2) Hook up the external HD and then ask Time Machine to "restore" the image of my MacBook's HD from the backup made immediately before installing SL.
I would like to have my wireless back.
I upgraded to snow leopard a few months ago. Its fine but its messing with my battery life. ever since i installed it told me to check battery. now my battery last only a few minutes. ive reset pram and smc but nothing helps. This battery is 8months old. I feel its the software. there is much written about this on forums with people having similar problems. Im thinking of going back to leopard. If i do, what kind of things will i lose? like data and apps?
I opened a PDF to crop some parts of the file and there are two big issues:
1. I cannot crop multiple pages anymore. There just isn't that option in Inspector or anywhere else. I can only crop one page at a time.
2. Not only can I not crop more than one page at a time, but cropping doesn't actually delete the date. I can go to "View | PDF Display | Crop Box" and see what I just cropped!
Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've been noticing that Preview does not display images. A box will open and the background will be there, but no picture. I can scan images, and the automatic preview image that pops up is blank. I can download images from the internet, and they will appear as icons on my desktop, but when I double click them I get an appropriately sized blank Preview box. I can save the image to a thumb drive and put it on my girlfriend's computer (we run identical iMacs, for reference), and it will appear on her computer, but she is using the Adobe suite.

I have a lot of multipage pdf's that I need to reduce in file size. They are scanned pdf's so no actual editable content.
If i select a page and 'save as' I can save to jpeg where I can reset the dpi of the page (currently 300dpi). This is Fine, but I need to do it to all the pages of the pdf. If I select all pages 'save as' will only save out one page and not all.
If I print and choose 'pdf to jpeg', It will save out all pages but I don't get the ability to reduce to dpi and the output jpgs are still huge. Is there a way to save to pages out in one go to jpeg where I can adjust the dpi setting?
I have tried using the reduce file size option, but the resulting pdf has lost too much quality and is unreadable. Once I have the reduced jpegs it's easy enough to reimport into preview and save as a pdf.Â

After I bought and installed Snow Leopard, I realized some of the most important apps that I use do not work under the new OS and I've been waiting for weeks (months maybe) for some update from the developers but seeing as they are more likely to wait, I've decided to downgrade back to Leopard again, the thing is that I'm on a VERY tight schedule these weeks, I have a lot of deadlines to meet and I don't want to install the apps that do work on Snow Leopard back again in Leopard. I don't have a Time Machine backup from back when I was on Leopard, and I haven't even made one of SL either, just an external HHD with my data (but no apps).
I've read online that people are having a hard time downgrading because there are a lot of errors in Time Machine and Migration Assistant, the most common one I've read about is that the Migration Assistant does not allow you to migrate from a newer OS to an old one. Since the most important thing I wanna migrate are the applications I've already installed in SL, this would be counterproductive.
I have a new 27" 2.66Ghz Quad Core iMac which has got 10.6 installed. Does anyone know if I can go back and install 10.5?
Reason being, we run a content management system using quark 7.5 and are unable to upgrade to v8. There are operating issues running quark 7.5 on 10.6 and if I can go back to 10.5 that would solve everything.
Having an issue where Preview is crashing at the end of a Save As (hangs briefly when the progress bar is full, then crashes) -- happens pretty consistently. Running 10.6.1 (on top of a fresh 10.6 install), but happened in 10.6 as well, though perhaps not as often. Have plenty of memory.
One snippet of the crash report:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000010
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
I have a vague feeling that the issue might not be in Preview, per se, but in the OS.
I just got an imac and I saw that the preview function in the folders have changed a bit from Tiger. I was wondering how you can fast forward mp3's and movies in the small preview function?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a PDF that I scanned in myself and the first time I printed it it printed just the way it was supposed to. The next time I opened up the file in preview it looked normal on my screen but when I went to print it the output in the printer had the colors inverted. I have tried printing from preview and adobe acrobat and it printed the same the blacks came out white and the whites came out black. So I tried printing it from a windows computer and the file printed as it should, the colors were normal not inverted.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a work around how can preview save a locked JPG file? PNG's can do a save as in preview even if is locked.Â
here is the error below.Â
the reason why i want to find out is because outlook saves their attachment files locked and if i open them in preview, i cannot do a save as on JPGs.Â
i have not tried any other image viewer to automatically open the attachments and save them. PNG attachements behave alright so why can't JPGs?
Despite setting the print dialogue pane to not scale the image, Preview persists in scaling it to fit the page. How to fix?

i am constantly having a problem when i try and print a smallish image with Preview /automatically/ checking the Scale to Fit Paper Size and when i /uncheck/ this by clicking in the "Scale" radio button it /automatically/ enters the percent scale factor that would be required if I wanted to scale to fit to paper (e.g. 184%). Since I /don't/ want this scale (I already unchecked this option) I MANUALLY enter "100" in this box and - well - it prints out scale to fit to paper size /anyway/. i am using the Print Selected Image but the Print option behaves in the same way. Also, Auto Rotate (which defaults to AutoRotate with no option - "bad Preview, bad") has no effect on this. i have taken to pulling down to four or nine images to a page in order to get my images printed smaller, even though they never print out at 100%.Â

I frequently use Preview to annotate PDFs and screen shots, and every time I add a text box annotation it is formatted to center the text in the box. Is there any way to change that so that text is aligned with the left side of the box?

You used to be able to drag and drop pages from one Preview document to another. That feature is not longer available. Is there anyway to combine PDF documents into one file now?

I recently experienced a glitch in which my web browser locked during a shutdown operation. I had just changed a browser preference setting to "empty cookies and history" when I quit the browser. I restored the preference to its previous setting and the browser quit locking up. However, I now have a new problem: I can't download .pdf files (maybe others as well but I was able to download an application file successfully). This problem occurs with both Safari and Firefox browsers.I was recently checking the performance of 2 .pdf readers and I am sure I changed the default reader. I cannot remember how to restore Preview to be the default reader. Maybe this will get me back in business.

Last year I could add pdf documents together in Preview to make a compilation that was much easier to print in booklet form as it avoided blank pages. Some time this year the behaviour changed, and now when I drag one open pdf onto the window of another, although on screen they look as if they are now one, even if I highlight each page in the sidebar when I press Print only the first one prints, which is a retrograde step IMO.Â
Is there a way to get the old behaviour back? This was a new feature in Snow Leopard and has been immensely useful to me, significantly increasing my productivity. It also used to be able to save the three pdfs as one file, but this too is no longer possible.Â
Is there a setting I can change in order to allow pdf import again? I can't even import files that last year I successfully imported to make new combined files, so I know it is not the pdf settings on the pdf file, it is definitely something that changed in preview itself in Snow Leopard in early 2012.
I am being driven to distraction by this. It is a difficulty that has been mentioned again and again in MacRumors and elsewhere, but I cannot find any definitive answer to it.Â

I have seen some people talking about a new feature in Snow Leopard, where hovering over MP3s or PDFs allowed you to preview the file. I am not seeing this feature on my Snow Leopard machine. How do you enable it?
View 16 Replies View RelatedI have a pdf file, I want to copy certain pages from to a new file and rename the pages afterwards.
This is the awkward behavier, preview.app gives me, trying to do so:
It does not let me create a new pdf out of the program (command + N or file/new file) - why?
Instead, I have to drag one of the pages I want on the desktop, to create a new pdf file there.
Once I created a new pdf and dragged the wanted pages into my new file, I cannot rename the pages, which have now meaningless names including "(dragged)" in the middle. I have found no logical way, to rename these pages - why?
Do not ever plan, to save time in just selecting more than one page, to drag and copy over to your new pdf - you will end up with an alias in your sidebar of the new pdf file, which of no reason making sense to me is undeletable - which means - start over again!
