Applications :: Contemplating ILife Purchase - Additional Bells And Whistles
Oct 29, 2009
The big draw for me is iWeb. I'm a freelance designer and want an easy web site building application I can easily make updates with, post project pics, etc... iWeb is perfect - I've used it before. What I'm curious about is what sort of additional bells and whistles come with the other apps that aren't already available to me now. Do iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, etc. get a huge facelift or will I essentially be buying what I already have just to get my hands on one application?

Here are the issues that I'm having with firefox:
- Some embedded videos don't play at all
- I get error messages before and after some embedded videos
- Flip 4 Mac doesn't work properly (buttons disappear - so frustrating!)
- Really slow start up (compared to other browsers)
I have none of these issues when I visit the exact same websites using Safari. Now, I have a few reasons why I'm hesitant to switch:
- Add-ons (Foxmarks, Ad-Block, Customize Google, WOT, etc.)
- Custom Search Bars (top right)
- Ease, simplicity, and control
With that said, are there any equivalent Add-Ons for Safari (I know there is an Ad-Block one)? What about custom search bars? And finally, is there a way to view pdf files in Safari without having to download the file first?

I am considering purhcasing iLife 09 to upgrade from iLife 08 that came pre-installed on my early-2008 MacBook Pro, as I like the new iPhoto features, (the iLife app I use most frequently out of the entire bundle), but I was wondering if by doing so there is a chance I may lose any files.
For those that did the same 08 to 09 upgrade, did you lose an individual photos from your library, albums altogether, events, slideshows, etc.?
For those that didn't lose them directly in iLife/iPhoto, what about on the HDD itself, and vice versa?

long time reader, first time poster. I know this topic has been beaten to death - but I've read all the post and have not found an answer for my question.
If you have iLife 08 installed and just installed a new copy of iLife 09 - does the following happen?
1. iLife 08 gets removed.
2. All Data from iPhoto 08, iMovie 08, iDVD etc, gets transferred to the new application.
3. No Importing is required to move any of the data over the new version of the software. It just works as if you didn't even have iLife 08 in the first place.

To anyone who has bought iLife 11, how did you upgrade from 09? I cannot seem to find any documentation regarding this procedure on Apple's support site.
Do you first have to uninstall 09 and then install 11 or can you do an in place upgrade? By this I mean, can you simply install iLife 11 over top of iLife 09?

I did a spotlight launch of imovie and i clicked on it, and imovie 08 is still in my system. Would it be safe to delete the imovie 08/ idvd 08/garage band 08 so it does not interfer with 09. I just dont wanna loose any of my info, i just dont want both on the system, getting confused with them opening up.

When the recent ilife 09 (8.0.1) update appears in Software Update people of both ilife 09 and ilife 08 reported that it appeared for them. My question is, is it safe to apply this update for those who are on ilife 08?
I've just checked my Software Update and found the ilife 09 update, and I don't have ilife 09, I only have ilife 08.

I was thinking of maybe finding a white 20" iMac Core 2 Duo but there are a couple things I would like to know. First how much do they go for. Second, how well they handle games, not a very picky gamer, but some CoD4 at the monitors native resolution and still being able to get decent frames would be nice. The reason I'm contemplating this is because if it can't run CoD4 or other recent games well my G5 works fine for everything.

With all the recent chatter around the 5870 cards, especially the availability and compatibility issues with older than 2009 Mac Pro's, I'm wondering whether OS X is still a viable platform for a 3D graphics artist.....Having only really acquired those credentials a short while ago. The 2 things that are really important for 3d graphics are a decent GPU and as much CPU rendering power as you can get. The 08 Mac Pro had both of these things and was great value but since then things have changed. It's not just the cost of upgrading a system although that's pretty damn high at the moment. It's other stuff like the 5870 having 2 MDP's instead of 1 and an HDMI port, which is in my opinion far more useful. It's all the hassle and limited choices when it comes to upgrading the GPU when you can slot anything into a decent PC rig and just get on with it. It's being able to build a decent core i7 system that can render away and chug out frames without costing as much or more than a decent car. And it's about forced obsolescence....Systems that are only 2 or 3 years old being left out of the loop and the sense that Apple took your extra money in exchange for upgrade potential, and then welshed on the deal.
Conversely, I love the OS X environment. It's stable, keeps out of the way, it's great for video and general digital life management. I don't need to be reminded of the pro's and I am in general an advocate of Macs. If I didn't do 3D graphics, I'd buy an iMac and be very happy but that just doesn't cut it in the 3D world. So I'm coming to the conclusion that my next big system purchase in a year or so is going to be a PC again. I envisage working on that during the day and having my Macbook open beside it for email and iTunes etc (ie, all the fun nice stuff) and then when the working day is done, firing up the MP or plugging in the MBP to the big screen for "everything else" like music, video etc....

So I already placed my order for my new iMAC. I have a MacBook (2006) with iLife 08.
My question is: When I get to transfer my MacBook info into my new iMAC, will i encounter any problems with my iLife files being that I have iLife 08, and the new iMac's come with iLife 09? The Time Machine transfer won't bring the new iMac software back to 08 will it?
Just want to be sure before I set this up.

I'm looking to get my Mac running as close to factory spec as possible without having to reinstall the OS. As a result, I'm looking to get rid of any and all files that Apps leave behind when they're deleted. Like where preferences, caches etc are stored.

So I bought Leopard family-pack and installed on 4 Macs (and de-installed one). All installs were "clean installs". And all yielded Leopard WITHOUT iLife products (iPhoto, iTunes, etc.).
Now people tell me that they also did "clean installs" and iLife was present afterwards.
The only difference I can judge is that I used a family pack whilst the others used a "single licence" pack.
Can anyone provide some light into this?

I wiped my computer, and then I installed Snow Leopard. When I installed Snow Leopard, no iLife programs were on it anymore. (Garageband, etc)
I have Snow Leopard as an upgrade from leopard (which came with my laptop.) It's a 15" Macbook Pro.
so, is iLife included on the original discs that came with the computer? (Leopard) or does it only come pre-installed and after/if i wipe it, gone forever?
I just want to know, if i used my Leopard disc, would I be able to get it back?
Was it only not there because I installed directly from my Snow Leopard disc?

I just got my update disc, but when I put it in, it just sits there cranking for a minute or so and then ejects the DVD. I made sure my software was updated first, and did a shut-down ... but it still just ejects it.
I zapped the PRAM ... and then it did hold on to the disc a lot longer, but it just cranks and cranks and then ejects. I did put in a music CD just to make sure it wasn't the CD driver, but the CD opened and played just fine. Any ideas on why iLife '11 won't install?

I am considering buying a new macbook pro and i see that there is an option to get iWork 09 with it. What i am wondering, or assuming, is that iLife 09 comes with it. However after reading this forum i have seen that iLife isn't scheduled to be released until somewhere from Jan 20th to Feb. Would ordering it now mean getting the old iLife and having to pay for the new upgrade or is it best to wait until it has definately been released.

I just registered iLife 09 on the Apple site, however, what is the point? I can see the point of tethering software with a serial number to Apple, but how do Apple know I actually bought iLife when I registered it? Surely someone could just look on the box and find the part number which obviously isn't unique and register it that way?

This is more of a rant, sorry if it's not in the right place. But, does anyone else think it's pretty weak of Apple to charge their customers to upgrade? I know it's only $10, but I bought a new macbook two days ago... iLife 09 was already out, I feel like it should have been free. I understand if a customer buys an Apple computer before it's released... but not after. Especially when you're spending well over $1000, $2000 for MBP buyers.

I reformatted my Mac and went to get my iLife Family Pack disk out of the box and it isn't there.
I don't have iLife 09 on any system discs, and now I can't open my iPhoto library on my Mac Pro.
With iLife 11 reportedly close, I am really reluctant to shell out for another copy. Is there any way to move my iPhoto and iWeb from my MBP to my Mac Pro? I tried dumping iPhoto into applications but that wasn't enough. I only backed up my Home directory and not my system or system library.
