Applications :: Best Way To Use Windows 7 PC HD As WiFi Backup?

Apr 19, 2010

I put a 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box and my main computer is a MBP. I have a lot of my professional files/folders/work in a FireWire 800 external HD connected to the MBP and I want to use the 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box as a backup for both the HD and MBP. Right now I am just copying files manually to the HD over the network and that's very slow and open to failure (not incremental). Should I just figure out how to setup RSync on the windows box or is there a better alternative?

I installed bonjour for windows on the primary machine and it doesn't see the printer either. I have checked printer sharing everywhere to no avail. I am running OS X 10.5.6 and the rest of the machines in the house are Windows XP.

Windows On Mac :: WiFi Extremely Unreliable Under Vista Business

Jun 9, 2009

Machine is a 15" MacBook Pro, Early 2008 (last of the non-glossy variety). Router is latest Dual Band Apple Airport Extreme. Device manager lists the driver version as 4.170.25.12 and Service description is BCM43XX. Driver comes from a fresh install of Boot Camp drivers. The wireless card works just fine - very well, actually - on the Mac side, but the moment I switch to Vista, I lose any ability to connect at N speeds and get a maximum connection of 36 mbps, and usually closer to 11 or 14. Do newer drivers exist? I've been googling for quite some time and I can't find anything that seems to work on the mac.

Windows On Mac :: Unable To Use Wifi / Wireless Card Not Recognized On Bootcamp

Sep 12, 2009

So, I got the Polycarbonate Macbook , Parallels 5, and Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed windows on bootcamp and had parallels use the partition for windows and I got it all working, all the drivers on Windows are great, except the wifi. It's not even saying I've got a wireless card installed, it won't recognize that I have one in my Mac. But when I use parallels and when I boot it as a regular Mac, it works great. I've looked around and haven't found an answer to this? Anyone found a solution or could help?

Applications :: Unable To Find Backup Program / Customizable Program For Backup?

May 28, 2009

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.

I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.

Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]

So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.

Software :: Time Machine Unable To Perform Backup / Backup Is Too Large For Backup Volume

Oct 26, 2008

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.

Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)

The Time Machine error is: Quote:

"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

Windows On Mac :: Best Way To Backup OS Installations?

Dec 9, 2009

What is the best way to back up your Windows install on your Mac? I have True Image v11, but for some reason it does not see my C drive*. I recently tried Winclone a Mac program and while free, after backing up my Windows install, Windows would no longer boot until after I repaired the OS using the Windows Install DVD. Any suggestions for a better way to backup Windows?

Finally I have both Windows 32bit and 64 bit Vista install disks. I'm going to resist 7 for now, but is there any good reason to upgrade Windows 32bit to 64bit and would it break anything on a current 32bit install? I do a lot of gaming. Thanks!
*Update: TI sees the C drive as a Windows Dynamic drive which is unsupported.

Windows On Mac :: What Is The Best Backup Tool

Jun 22, 2010

I just bought a new HD for my MBP. However I would like a backup of the data on the boot camp partition before it gets replaced (on fri.). Does anyone know of a good tool to back up Windows? I have windows 7. It is barely bootable (there is only 13 mb left free) so if it can be a native Mac app it would be better. I have heard of WinClone, anyone had any luck with that?

Also is there any easy way to enlarge the boot camp partition when before of after it has been restored on the new HD?

Specs are: original mbp 15", osx 10.6.3 and Windows 7 boot camped.

Windows On Mac :: Visualization And Backup (Need One License)

Sep 18, 2010

I need to install windows on my iMac. The plan is to install it in under bootcamp so that my better half can boot to windows for her stuff, which is straight forward enough. I will probably install parallels (or similar) to give myself the option of either boot to windows or access it virtually. Now, on the basis that this is a first for me I have a couple of questions that I could do with answering from those that know this stuff.

1. Am I likely to run into any windows licensing issues. I'm assuming that I will only need 1 license.
2. If I edit a file, a word .doc for example, in a virtual window, is that edit saved to the original file? e.g. if I then boot to windows and open the file, then the edits made virtually are there. Simple stuff I know, but like I said, it's a first for me.
3. What are my options for backing up the windows partition, can I back it up using Time Machine / Capsule?

OS X :: Backup To Windows / NTFS Drive

I will be buying a macbook pro next week and was wondering what the best way to backup data was such as photos/mp3s/videos etc. I have a PC in my office in my house which has ample space available and in which the HD's are raided so a bit more security than just a stand alone laptop HD.

What is the easiest way to back this data up through windows? does osx come with a tool to do it? or could i just make a simple cron job and mount the windows HD in fstab or something (I am coming from a linux/unix background so im presuming the command window is just like a terminal windows in linux).

Applications :: Time Machine Taking Long Time To Backup - Changing Backup Time?

Dec 11, 2009

I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.

Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.

Usually a OSX re-install and TM restore does the trick, but this one has the OSX HFS+ and a smaller NTFS Win7 partition. I assume cloning will still let both OSes run, or is this just a bag of hurt and I need to reinstall everything...They're both in a Mid 2010 MBP (with optibay).

Windows On Mac :: Restoring WinClone (Vista) Backup

(When I recreated a new partition using Boot Camp, I left it as FAT32. I didn't use a Windows CD to change it to NTFS, because I believed WinClone does it for you automatically.) When I tried to restore my backup, WinClone gives me an error message (click on the thumbnail below for full-sized version). I have no idea what went wrong. Windows On Mac :: Possible To Backup Drive Connected To USB Port?

Aug 14, 2009

I have a windows hard drive from an old labtop (windows xp) that is failing, and I need to make a backup of it, so I'll remove that hard drive and connect it to a usb port on my macbook pro. Now I need a program that can do that, it can either be windows or mac app sins I also have windows installed on this mac. Here is the problem I bought Norton ghost for this, problem is the Norton ghost has become a terrible app, that rarely works correct these days. I for the life of me could not get the new hard drive to boot after making a complete clone.

The new hard drive works fine with a clean install, and the old hard drive boots fine. Now is there any program you can recommend that you have used to backup a external hard drive onto a file on another computer to then restore that file to another external harddrive and have it boot in the old system.
