Windows On Mac :: Best Way To Backup OS Installations?

Dec 9, 2009

What is the best way to back up your Windows install on your Mac? I have True Image v11, but for some reason it does not see my C drive*. I recently tried Winclone a Mac program and while free, after backing up my Windows install, Windows would no longer boot until after I repaired the OS using the Windows Install DVD. Any suggestions for a better way to backup Windows?

Finally I have both Windows 32bit and 64 bit Vista install disks. I'm going to resist 7 for now, but is there any good reason to upgrade Windows 32bit to 64bit and would it break anything on a current 32bit install? I do a lot of gaming. Thanks!
*Update: TI sees the C drive as a Windows Dynamic drive which is unsupported.

OS X :: Does SL Allow Installations Of SL Directly?

Aug 27, 2009

I have 3 Macs within my family that I would like to upgrade to SL. Sounds like the Family Pack upgrade would be a great purchase.

However, if at some point, I want to reinstall SL on a SL-loaded machine, do I need to reinstall Leopard, to get Snow Leopard to recognize the upgrade?

Or will SL allow installations of SL directly?

Mac Pro :: Running Two Tiger Installations

Jul 22, 2008

I have a Mac Pro and am having several annoying problems. I'm new to Macs and I probably messed up my installation so I would like to start from scratch and reinstall Leopard on a brand new drive. Here's my question.. I would like to remove the old drive from bay 1 and replace it wit the new drive. After I install Leopard on the new drive can I put the old drive in the currently empty bay 4? Will I then be able to boot into either drive? The reason being that until I get the new installation configured properly and all my applications reinstalled, I may need access to the old installation. If this scenario will work, how do I select which volume to boot at start up?

OS X :: Black MacBook Installations From Some Other DVDs

Apr 24, 2010

I've been trying to install OS X.5 on a new HD that I just installed into a Black MacBook... the DVDs are coming from an Aluminum MacBook. I have already formatted (Partitioned [1]) the HD so that it is in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it's in GUID Partition Table Scheme. I restart the Laptop and it asks me what language I want to install OS X in, I pick English, and it stalls for about 30 seconds and then says: "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer."

MacBook Pro :: OS X 10.6.8 And ILife Installations Failing

Apr 23, 2012

I own a 13 inch Macbook Pro from 2010 which originally came installed with Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Over the course of my use of this macbook I upgraded it to Lion 10.7. Recently I made the decision to go back to SL and popped the OS X disc in (the disc it came with). The install of SL went fine and I didn't notice a problem until I rebooted into the new install and went to install iLife from the DVD that came with my Mac.

As soon as I enter my password into the installer and it begins the install process, it fails with a big yellow exclamation mark, simply saying the install failed. The same thing happened with my downloaded 10.6.8 combo update, so this proves it cannot be an issue with the DVD drive.

The only thing I can think of is that the OS X disc appeared scratched, so this may have resulted in a faulty install which meant it could then not allow the 10.6.8 update or iLife to be installed...

IMac :: Admin Account Also Utilized For Installations?

Software :: HP ScanJet 5300c - Verifying Installations Of Drivers

Sep 26, 2008

I have PowerMac G4, 1.25Ghz PowerPC, 1.25GB Ram, OSX 10.3.9 and want to use my HP 5300c scanner. I installed the HP Image Zone Ver 9.1.2 software that at least on the surface seemed to install the drivers. I am able to see the device on USB through both System Profile USB and Tech Tool pro 4. I suspect an HP driver installation problem or incorrect Driver /compatibility issue. How to verify the correct installation of the drivers, where to go to ensure that I have the correct drivers. There is no way to download software directly from HP, only through oexternal links into the HP site. If anyone knows of the correct links for the 10.3.x drivers, or have any other suggestions as to what they have done to get their HP ScanJet 5300c to work with Power PC G4 with OSX 10.3.x. I last used the HP 5300c with my iBook G3 under OS9, though that was a pain due to CP conflicts - Luckily I still use conflict catcher - and now I need to use it with the G4 under OSX.

OS X :: Update 10.5.8 Installations To Snow Leopard Failed (Non Bootable MacBook)

Nov 21, 2009

I have a white MacBook. I tried to update my 10.5.8 Leopard installation to Snow Leopard with the upgrade DVD I just got. Unfortunately, update failed on me. After being noticed by the installer that the update failed, I ended up with a NON-BOOTABLE MacBook, that whenever I try to boot from hard drive, after showing me 30 seconds of the "spinning ball" that indicates activity, shuts down. I tried it like 10 times, same result. What happens if I boot from DVD and try an installation that way? Will it try to upgrade? Will it wipe my hard drive content?

OS X :: Restore Late 2007 IMac With Unibody MacBook Installations Discs?

Jul 29, 2009

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm selling my iMac to buy a MacBook. The MacBook (2008 uMB) has arrived, with all the discs etc, which is brilliant.

My iMac however, came preloaded with Tiger, with a Leopard upgrade disc in the box. This Leopard disc has disappeared off the face of the planet, and so Apple are shipping one out to me, not sure when it will arrive. In the meantime, my auction ends tomorrow, so would it be possible to restore the iMac using the Leopard discs that have come with the MacBook, or is it safer to reinstall Tiger, and wait for the Leopard disc to arrive before shipping?

Software :: Time Machine Unable To Perform Backup / Backup Is Too Large For Backup Volume

Oct 26, 2008

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.

Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)

The Time Machine error is: Quote:

"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

Windows On Mac :: What Is The Best Backup Tool

Jun 22, 2010

I just bought a new HD for my MBP. However I would like a backup of the data on the boot camp partition before it gets replaced (on fri.). Does anyone know of a good tool to back up Windows? I have windows 7. It is barely bootable (there is only 13 mb left free) so if it can be a native Mac app it would be better. I have heard of WinClone, anyone had any luck with that?

Also is there any easy way to enlarge the boot camp partition when before of after it has been restored on the new HD?

Specs are: original mbp 15", osx 10.6.3 and Windows 7 boot camped.

Windows On Mac :: Visualization And Backup (Need One License)

Sep 18, 2010

I need to install windows on my iMac. The plan is to install it in under bootcamp so that my better half can boot to windows for her stuff, which is straight forward enough. I will probably install parallels (or similar) to give myself the option of either boot to windows or access it virtually. Now, on the basis that this is a first for me I have a couple of questions that I could do with answering from those that know this stuff.

1. Am I likely to run into any windows licensing issues. I'm assuming that I will only need 1 license.
2. If I edit a file, a word .doc for example, in a virtual window, is that edit saved to the original file? e.g. if I then boot to windows and open the file, then the edits made virtually are there. Simple stuff I know, but like I said, it's a first for me.
3. What are my options for backing up the windows partition, can I back it up using Time Machine / Capsule?

OS X :: Backup To Windows / NTFS Drive

What is the easiest way to back this data up through windows? does osx come with a tool to do it? or could i just make a simple cron job and mount the windows HD in fstab or something (I am coming from a linux/unix background so im presuming the command window is just like a terminal windows in linux).

Windows On Mac :: Restoring WinClone (Vista) Backup

I used WinClone to save a Vista backup on my external drive (Mac formatted), removed the Vista partition using Boot Camp, recreated a new partition using Boot Camp, and then attempted to restore my Vista backup using WinClone. (When I recreated a new partition using Boot Camp, I left it as FAT32. I didn't use a Windows CD to change it to NTFS, because I believed WinClone does it for you automatically.) When I tried to restore my backup, WinClone gives me an error message (click on the thumbnail below for full-sized version). I have no idea what went wrong. Windows On Mac :: Possible To Backup Drive Connected To USB Port?

Aug 14, 2009

I have a windows hard drive from an old labtop (windows xp) that is failing, and I need to make a backup of it, so I'll remove that hard drive and connect it to a usb port on my macbook pro. Now I need a program that can do that, it can either be windows or mac app sins I also have windows installed on this mac. Here is the problem I bought Norton ghost for this, problem is the Norton ghost has become a terrible app, that rarely works correct these days. I for the life of me could not get the new hard drive to boot after making a complete clone.

The new hard drive works fine with a clean install, and the old hard drive boots fine. Now is there any program you can recommend that you have used to backup a external hard drive onto a file on another computer to then restore that file to another external harddrive and have it boot in the old system.
