View 8 RepliesBack on 10.3 I used a Rogue Amoeba program called Detour (I think) that allowed you to control which audio devices played audio from which software programs. I used it to send iTunes music through a USB audio device to powered speakers while playing Office apps noises through the built-in speaker. They discontinued it with 10.4 because Apple changed the way audio is handled. Question: Is there some similar app that maybe let's you control volume of each audio-emitting app? So I could turn Office all the way down (all those grating save chimes are killing me) while keeping iTunes all the way up?

I'm looking for an audio program that will allow me to take one long audio track, separate it by markers (or something), and export/burn to CD (each marker would represent an individual track). The Wavelab program has this feature, but Wavelab is PC based so I can't use it =( Anyone know of anything?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know the exact specs of my computer but it is the macbook just before the new ones came out from stock, so no parts are replaced/upgraded. Literally 10 minutes ago my computer was running fine and I was installing this program called JACK because one of my audio programs I run needed it. So after I installed it told me to restart so I did. then when I did it booted up into my empty windows partion, now it's a long story why I have a partion without windows installed but we can talk about that later. So naturally I was like "crap" and restarted but I forgot which button was to choose the start up disk so I held control-option-command hoping one of them would register... nothing happens. And now whenever I try to restart my computer I just get to the gray screen. I have tried every safe-startup-command-line thing out there and I don't get past the grey screen. If I hold down option/alt then I get a mouse(yay) but nothing else. If I hold down the mouse button then I get stuck at the apple symbol. So my question is if anyone has had similar problems and has fixed them. Oh ya, I also don't have my install disk with me.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know the Mac has a screen recorder, but the problem is it doesn't record onboard audio in addition to the screen recording. I've also tried the audio recording stuff and it just doesn't work.So are there any programs out there that can record audio AND video at the same time, in one file, on the Mac? I've tried the AudioHijack and Audacity stuff, but it's impossible to sync it with the screen-recorded video

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to convert some video files (specifically swf in this case) to audio files so I can listen on my iPod. I looked everywhere and can't find some free software that does that. There are tons that have trial periods with lots of limitations (like it won't convert anything larger than a 5k size file) so I don't want those because I won't know if the thing works well unless I pay for it. I'm not opposed to paying for a converter IF I know it works awesome on a Mac.

I am trying to play a .avi video on my MAC that was originally in .rar compressed format. I opened it in VLC, and the audio wont play.. so i checked the info and saw that:
video codec: XVID
audio codec: mpga
I have perian downloaded.. it doesnt seem to be doing anyting. I dont know if i've missed something in my extracting process of the .rar file.
I'm using iMovie 09 with the very latest updates applied and I am having trouble with audio skimming in just one of my projects. The project is only 8 minutes long and is just a collage of pictures to music.
The audio skimming button is toggled to on but no green bars show in the equalizer when I skim over the video. The audio works fine when playing the project and in other windows around the project such as the event viewer. I have plenty of free hard drive space and the thumbnails slider is set to '5s'. ALL of my other projects skim no problem.
Now this is the strange part. If I click to enter the precision editor on any part of the video and then click done (even without altering anything) the skimming comes back. It thus disappears if place a new item in the timeline until I go back into the precision editor where it re enables itself.
is it possible to take a program made from a PC and make it run on a mac? without crossover (it never works)its not a complex program but it never works from me
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.
I am trying to switch my email program from Thunderbird to the mac email program Mail.Thunderbird has been playing up a lot recently and am tired of the glitches.
I have all the correct server settings etc and succesfully imported my mailboxes. The problem is that when I send an email it isn't from the right email address?? Is this a Mail problem or smth to do with my settings? I'm with Virgin media and have a separate set of email address through my website for my business so my email address are through freeola that I am using through Thunderbird.I'm sorry if this all sounds very stupid but I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out where I have gone wrong!
I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.
Firstly, I'm a hardcore Mac fan and think that Time Machine was great idea. I know it does complete backup, including software and applications. My question is what is preventing the user from installing a time machine restore of another mac on a new one thus giving the new mac the same expensive software for free?
Example: I got a refurbished 2009 i7 iMac and would like to have Photoshop on my iMac too, it currently resides on my MBP. Could I simply do a time machine back up from my MBP to my iMac and get the application pro bono? Just used Migration Assistant and it worked flawlessly! Much better than using time machine.
Hi, so I've been using Blender off and on for about a year and a half and I was thinking about buying a different program. I'd like to keep it under $200 but if its a little over that fine. I was thinking about Silo but I don't really like not having the ability to extrude single vertices and subdivide objects like in Blender. Also if their are any products that have a student discount or something like that for someone in high school that would help too.

At first, it seemed like Adobe makes several programs that do the same thing. But after a bit of research, I found out that they do have target audiences. I hope this guide helps people who are confused.
Dreamweaver vs Contribute.
If you want to build a website, get Dreamweaver. Contribute is designed for people who want to edit their Dreamweaver-built site, and is designed with collaboration in mind, because it edits right off the server.
Personally, I think Contribute is a big-ridden piece of garbage, if it were me, I would stick to Dreamweaver
Photoshop vs Fireworks.
Don't think of Fireworks as a stripped down version of Photoshop. Think of it as a really-really-really-really stripped down version of Flash, smashed together with CorelDRAW. Fireworks was meant to be used to make things like rollover icons, menus, and such for websites. It lets you drag-and-drop squares and circles. Pretty simple
Photoshop, on the other hand, is a powerful, expensive, image editor. Unlike Fireworks, you cannot add any dynamic-ness (word?) to images.
InDesign vs Illustrator.
InDesign is definitely more powerful than Illustrator. If you are just making simple one-page documents, ID might be a bit of an overkill.
Bridge vs Finder
Bridge is worthless. I can't see what it does that Finder doesn't.
Please correct any errors I may have made, as this is just from what I can tell. Hope this helps you with your purchase of overpriced Adobe software.
I need a torrent program with RSS (is uTorrent for OS X?) Is VLC the best AVI playing program or is there better for OS X , I heard PLEX was good to.
View 15 Replies View RelatedNew Mac user here (these forums helped me make a great, informed choice of my refurbished 2.66ghz iMac), and while the learning curve is significant, I'm loving it, and already realize its just what I've wanted in a computer experience all these years. I talked with someone recently who recommended I download Stuffit for zip/unzip purposes. I did a search here on the forums and noticed quite a few people expressing frustration with it, and suggestions of multiple programs for different people. I'm a very 'basic user.' I'd rather have one program that I go-to and use for these purposes. What free zip/unzip program do you recommend?

View 5 Replies View RelatedNeed a good zip program for mac. One to make zip files not extract them. And don't say snow leopard already has that built in. That's garbage cuz it makes that extra useless OS_X folder and that's not needed at all. Plus it never works when say making themes for SMF. They never upload correctly. I know cuz it does on my moms windows 7. Already tried YemuZIP for mac. No good either. And if I manually upload the files it works fine. So it has to be the zip program. Any others besides mac or yemu good for making zip files. Preferably free.
