Was just wondering that are there any backup apps similar to Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper that support formats others than HFS+. I did search via MRoogle but couldn't find anything. I would just like to have an automated backup of my home folder that can be accessed with a PC as well
View 6 Repliesi am trying to install Windows on my Mac. i created the partition (+/- 20gigs) and ive inserted the Windows disc. the installation works fine although i noticed that i don't get the page that gives me the option to choose between ntfs or fat32... yet it continues, and says windows is installed... but when it reboots, it goes directly to my mac-osx
im not too good with computers but i've managed to find a lot of threads that were talking about my problem but none of them could really correct the problem.
some people said that it might be the version of windows that could be the source of the problem.
i have Windows Xp Corporate version. might that be the problem?
I am in need of a data recovery app that can recover data off a Fat32 drive and save the recovered data to a NTFS drive (I use NTFS-3G). I have PhotoRec but can't seem to navigate to my NTFS external to save the data (the only drive big enough to save the data too is my girlfriend's 500GB external and it is NTFS).
Any tips to getting photorec to navigate to the drive (I am pulling from one external to another). Photorec sees the one I want to save too I just can't get it to select it. Also if there are any other programs yall recommend, I will give them a shot.
Am I correct, that Spotlight doesn't index NTFS formatted volumes? I have a 1tb external with about 700gb full of apps, media and other data I'd like to be able to search.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows/DOS formatted external harddrive adn want to access/write/delete data from it using my MCP with Lion OS. I downloaded NTFS-3G 2011.1.15 and installed and restarted my Mac but then got this error when OS started and I cant see my Windows external disk any more. I am not 100% sure if the format of this disk was FAT or NTFS.

I have a 1/3 full external drive that is currently formatted for MAC OS External.
I want to partition the drive in half and use the 2nd partition for Windows FAT32.
However, when I try to do this with Disk Utility it does not give me the FAT32 option.
I'm intending on buying an iMac in a few days, just waiting for Macworld to come and go.
My question is this. I currently have 3 external Hard Drives on my PC. 2 x 360GB and 1 x 500GB. These contain MP3's, Photos/Videos, FLAC (Uncompressed Audio) respectively. Each disc is probably around 2 thirds full. They are all in formatted to NTFS.
Is there anyway that I can convert them to FAT32 without losing the Data so that the iMac can Read and Write to them when I swap them over to the Mac? (and is this even a good idea as I understand that FAT32 is extremely inefficient with volumes of this size)
The only alternative I can think off is to copy everything from the disks to the internal mac drive, reformat the USB drive for the mac and then copy everything back..
I have a fall 2008 model macbook, 2.4 GHz 4GB ram, etc. I run windows XP SP3 on bootcamp, with a fat32 partition. I believe the external harddrive I run games from is also fat32 formatted.
I've had enough problems with transferring files over 4GB that i've decided to attempt to convert from fat32 to ntfs. I'd like to do it while on my windows partition, with the CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS in the command prompt. What precautions should I take before I attempt this? How difficult will it be to also convert my external drive to ntfs? Will anything be deleted in the process? Will I still be able to use parallels?
I was using my external hard drive with my mac and its formatted in the MAC HF(something like that) file system. I would like to format that external hard drive such that the file system is either NTFS or FAT32 so that I can use it on my windows partition running on boot camp. I am asking this question since I am planning to get a new HD for my mac and use the old one with windows.

I had this external as FAT32 before which was not problematic until I started downloading 720 and 1080 .mkv movies that were larger than 4gb. So I reformatted to NTFS which will accept files larger than 4gb but realized that OSX don't be got the ability to write to NTFS.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI receive my new iMac (27', 16GB Ram, 3.4Ghz i7, 2GB Graphic card). Time machine restore was perfect. Then I ran Bootcamp Partition. Then I have launched win 7 DVD install, Quick Format in NTFS and restore from win7 backup. Well Win 7 run well (with bootcamp 4.0). I can restart under Mac OS X Lion. And there the BootCamp Volume appears empty as a FAT32 Volume. I have tried to unmount it, then try a mount_ntfs (i/o error message in terminal). So annoying with that because I can't browse my NTFS Vootcamp and can't launch my BootCamp Win 7 through Vmware fusion (4)!

I'm going to buy my first Macbook this weekend and I'm trying to get myself ready so that I don't have to waste precious playing time on stuff like this I have an external hard drive filled with music, videos and files. I would like to keep using my drive on my mac to access my files and save backups etc. The hard drive is in NTFS format and from what I understand the mac will be able to read but not write to it - which isn't what I want. Ideally I don't want to lose the content on the drive, but if I have to I could slowly copy it all onto dvds. If possible I also want the drive to be compatible with Windows so I can plug it into parents/friends/uni's computers and still be able to view/add content on rare occasions. What format should the drive be and how do I do that? (I think I can manage to do it once someone points me in the right direction)

I recently replaced Leopard 10.5 with a clean installation (not an upgrade) of Snow Leopard 10A432 (SL) on my Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook (aluminum, 2GB RAM). Under Leopard 10.5 I was able to use Disk Utility (DU) to dynamically re-size existing volumes on USB hard drives. But under SL I am unable to do so. While I am able to replace all existing partitions on a USB drive with a new set of partitions and resize them prior to their creation by dragging the slider bars, once created, DU will not let me dynamically resize the new partitions. Doing so was easy with DU under 10.5. For example, after I re-partitioned a USB drive with DU under SL and created 2 partitions, I was able to make the top partition smaller by dragging the bottom edge upward from the lower right corner, but there seems to be no way (and no slider bars) to adjust the size of the lower partition to use the space freed by having made the upper partition smaller. In fact, although the upper partition reports a smaller size, when clicked on, the border around the upper partition still includes the range defined by its initial, larger size. There also seems to be now way (no slider bars) at the top edge of partitions that would allow them to be expanded/contracted from the top down. Has anyone else encountered these issues? Any thoughts/suggestions as to how to resolve them? Are these known issues? I have searched but not come across it as yet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have to do a back up (I'm cutting in Avid) on this FAT32 volume (for interoperability it is formatted this way), but I can't mount it via the Disk Utility or the 'mount' command in Terminal (it doesn't list the device, despite seeing it in Disk Utility - the volume is greyed out).The drive is connected via Firewire 400 and 800, USB is not available (to few slots).

If I create a windows partition using bootcamp and then go into disk utility and erase to fat32 will this allow a boot into the xp drive? My xp disc keeps restarting before it gives me the opportunity to format the drive to either a ntfs or a fat so I need a way around this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got an external drive (320GB) that I'm trying to format as FAT32 using Disk Utility, then create a large (as in, most of the drive) HFS partition.
The problem is that no matter what I do, it will only format the drive as Mac Journaled. It lets me select other options (Mac, FAT32) and goes through the process with no errors or warnings, but when I click on the drive it remains Journaled with a partition of whatever I just selected.
I am sure beyond the shadow of a doubt that I am selecting the drive itself, not the partition, when formatting. This is extremely frustrating. Google searches aren't turning up any clues and I don't know what to do.
I have other external drives formatted as FAT32 with a large Mac partition so I know it's possible.
I need to do this so I can mount the drive on a Windows machine.
i turned my mac on last monday, and whn i tried to log onto my admin account, it took me to a light blue screen, then back to the login page. but i was able to log into a non-admin account. The system preferences is a question mark in my dock and it refuses to open when clicked in the apple dropdown.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe disk on one of our iMacs has failed, so I am seeking to replace it with a new drive and then restore from the current Time Machine backups stored on our Time Capsule. My plan was to attach the replacement drive to the iMac via a USB enclosure, format it, and recover the volume and once that is complete, replace the disk. The problem however is that the OS X installer's Restore System From Backups option does not display the correct backup volume. The Select A Backup Source displays only "Data" on network "tc" under the list of backup volumes.
Clicking on Connect to Remote DIsk brings up the authentication dialog, and I enter the correct credentials, but the volume list does not change, and the Continue button remains grayed-out. The syslog data from the Time Capsule confirms successful afp connections, and df confirms that the Data volume is being mounted from the TC. We have three Macs running 10.6.8, all writing their Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule running 7.6.1. Each computer has its own Time Capsule login ID, and all Time Machine backups have been working properly (new backups are being created and can recover files).
Using the Finder to examine the volumes on the Time Capsule, I can see that each computer has an empty Data volume and another volume with the computer's name which contains the sparse bundle that Time Machine is writing to. It looks like the issue is that the Installer is only looking for the Data volume and not showing the other volumes. Is there a super secret keyboard sequence I need to issue to get it to show the other volumes?

I am looking for an OSX app which will backup an external Fat32 drive to another external Fat32 using Leopard machine.
My machine is bootcamp-ed to switch between OSX and XP for work. I keep the working files on an external Fat32 drive for maximum compatibility.
I have searched for a Mac app which will support Fat32 backup, but have not had any luck. IE -- Time Machine / Superduper do seem to properly read / write to Fat32.
Also, is there an app which can backup files from an external Mac Journalled drive to Fat32? This backup is just to make copies of files (like .mp3 and .doc) -- not a bootable backup of the applications folder. I have bootable backups of my primary OSX drive using Time Machine and Superduper on Mac drives.
I would prefer a OSX app for this. I tried mounting the backup drive to XP, but it does not see the drive. Therefore, I would prefer to not rely on a Windows app solution.
If it helps -- the backup drive (a 1TB WD MyBook) has four partitions: three Fat32 drives and one Mac Journalled (for a bootable Superduper backup). The working drive I want to back up is a 320G WD Passport. The 1TB runs through a Firewire 800 port and the 320G runs through a USB 2.0 port. Hope these items do not matter.

When creating the volumes in the RAID utility, you can not edit them, resize, etc. If one large volume is created in the RAID utility, you can then partition that one volume using the Apple Disk Utility, which then allows you to resize if needed.

As said in the instructions, if you want more than 32 GB on my "PC" partition I need to use Mac's disk utility. The thing is I don't have the option to partition in NTFS, only MAC OS extended (journaled, etc..) and FAT32. But I need a lot more than 32 GB for my PC stuff. Now how can I do that? I need to backup some stuff from my Windows XP (bootcamp) really soon! And I want to be able to plug it in another PC and be able to transfer both ways. How can I get the NTFS partition option with disk utility? or is there other softwares for that? In all what I want is about 500 GB for MAC and 500 GB for PC (NTFS)!

While doing this, I noticed that there was a "professional" version of NTFS-3G sold by Tuxera (who makes NTFS-3G). I tried to find information comparing the two, but can't; Even on their own website. Does anyone know what the major differences between them are? Is worth the $31 for a normal user (meaning someone who has a BootCamp partition, but doesn't always copy to and from it)?
