OS X :: Any Cloning Software Allow To Only Run Backup Program?

Jul 31, 2009

1) Have a bootable CD that only runs the backup program (OSX not running)
2) Create an image copy of my hard drive
3) Be able to browse through the image file when I am working in OSX so that I can pick out individual files if needed

This is how I use Acronis TruImage on my Windows systems. For whatever reason, I don't trust backups made while the operating system is running. Maybe this comes from my old days trying to backup servers with ArcServe and having to buy a special addon to help you backup open files. I think it's just cleaner if I run the backup from a "dos" environment. I think my Acronis TruImage disc boots PC-DOS and runs only the TruImage software.

Windows On Mac :: Cloning Or Backup/restore Of OSX/Win7 HDD?

Jan 12, 2011

I want to copy/clone my current HDD onto another (both 500GB, but a different make/model). Usually a OSX re-install and TM restore does the trick, but this one has the OSX HFS+ and a smaller NTFS Win7 partition. I assume cloning will still let both OSes run, or is this just a bag of hurt and I need to reinstall everything...They're both in a Mid 2010 MBP (with optibay).

Windows On Mac :: BootCamp Backup (Cloning / Image) Restore

Sep 17, 2010

I would like to "Backup", "Clone" or create an "Image" or whatever else people call it of my bootcamp installation. I know I can create an "Image" of bootcamp via disk utility but how would I restore it? Would I first delete the bootcamp partition and then re-create a bootcamp partition and then restore? Or would I just restore? Will the end result be what I am expecting, i.e., my Win 7 install right back to the perfect state of when I created the image?

Right now, let's say my Windows 7 install got smoked one day for whatever reason (it is windows) and I needed to re-install. Me personally, I would just go into Bootcamp Assistant, delete the Windows partition then create a new one and then get installing. Unfortunately installing and updating takes hours and that is what I am trying to avoid.

Hardware :: Cloning Time Capsule Drive And Increase Backup Volume?

Jun 3, 2010

I have a time Capsule that is nearly filled. It is giving me error messages each night it tries to backup saying that there is too much on my computer to backup. So, I went out and bought a 4TB Western Digital external drive. I want to copy all the data from the time capsule onto the new hard drive (so I don't loose any of my older backups) and then have the time capsule use that same WD drive as my new backup. I have seen there are ways to copy from time machine drives to new external USB drives, but I was under the impression time machine uses a different kind of backup method than a time capsule.

Is that true? Can someone point me to a place that explains how exactly I would copy the drive in the time capsule. (I understand I need to use Disk Utility, but I cant get the TC drive to show up in that program). Also, is there a way to instruct time capsule to stop using its own internal drive and use the drive connected to its USB for the backups? I think Apple's answer is no, but I dont know if thats really the case or not.

OS X :: Third Party Disk Cloning Software Vs Apple's Disk Utility

Apr 27, 2010

If I want to make a bootable clone of my boot drive onto an external FW hard drive which I can restore from if my internal boot drive becomes corrupted, do I need 3rd party software like Carbon Copy Cloner, or can I just create an image of the boot disk in Apple's Disk Utility and save that to the external FW hard drive?

Apart from incremental updating, what is the difference between these two methods in terms of being able to restore my computer to a previous state with all my applications installed? (I keep my data stored on a 2nd internal hard drive and am happy with manually backing this up to another external HD). So my reason for wanting to make a clone of my boot drive is so that I don't need to waste time re-installing all of my applications from DVD...

OS X :: Partitioning With Disk Utility For Storage And Backup

Jun 25, 2009

Here's my setup:
One, dual bay enclosure (1.5TB x2):
OWC Mercury Elite - AL Pro Dual Bay Enclosure
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Othe...ng/MEFW934AL2/
and one, two pack of 1.5TB Seagate HD
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...550055-683153-
Total: paid $310 including shipping for the 3.0TB external setup.

I'm going to use FW400(since my MB pro has no 800 port) and partition this into two 1.5TB partitions. one for storage, and one for time machine backup. My question is if I choose 2 partitions in disk utility, will it automatically know to use one of the 1.5TB Seagate HD for one partition and the other 1.5TB seagate for the 2nd partition? Or will it use half of one and half the other? I would like one partition to be one seagate 1.5TB HD, and the 2nd partition to be the other, that way if one fails I have a backup (using Time Machine with one partition to backup the other 1.5TB drive).

OS X :: Hard Drive Backup - Do Not Have Disk Utility

Jan 4, 2010

I am going away traveling and need to back up all my stuff off of my mac for the first time.. (pics, music etc the usual). I brought a WD Elements 500GB External Hard Drive and when I plug it into my mac book (OSx) it appears in finder, and the desktop but I can't drag and drop nothing into it. Apparently I have to format it! So have researched about formatting it, but I don't have "Disk Utility" in my utilities? My Mac was given to me from a friend second hand so i don't have the disks etc to get it. Any other way of formatting my Hard drive or a link to download disk utilities or any alternatives!

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Repair HD - Possible To Create New Image To Backup?

Jun 7, 2012

Two days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

Applications :: Intelligent Cloning - Carbon Copy Cloner To Mirror Any Changes Made In Original Hard Drive

Aug 27, 2010

I have an external hard drive with lots of media files, and now I backed this up to an identical external hard drive. I wanted to use Carbon Copy Cloner to mirror any changes made in the original hard drive, but I have now tried this for the first time, after having moved some files around. Now instead of moving those files on the other hard drive, CCC just copied these files from the original hard drive, something that takes much longer. Is there any program that could do this more intelligently? (moving files on the backup drive instead of copying them over from the original drive again?)

Applications :: Unable To Find Backup Program / Customizable Program For Backup?

May 28, 2009

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.

I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.

Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]

So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.

Software :: Time Machine Unable To Perform Backup / Backup Is Too Large For Backup Volume

Oct 26, 2008

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.

Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)

The Time Machine error is: Quote:

"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

MacBook Pro :: Cloning Old SSD To New SSD On I7 ?

May 3, 2012

I recently transferred or am in the process of transferring my old info from a Mac Pro Tower to a new 2.8 i7 MBP. Previously, I had a 40GB SSD drive with my OS and Apps and it ran perfectly fine, however I needed more space. I ended up buying a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB and have since had problems with the Crucial. I just now updated the firmware but that didn't seem to fix a thing. So what I've done is initialized the M4 SSD w/ Disk Utility via Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I've done a clone using Time Machine (it worked but it was really slow and would occasionally lag for 30 seconds out of nowhere with a beach ball) and I've also done a clone using Carbon Copy and that was ridiculously slow (I would get a beach ball every 5-10 seconds and just opening a new window in the finder would cause a beach ball).

I don't know what could be the problem. I've since made a bootable SD card with both Leopard and Lion, thinking I'd just install a brand new OS onto the new SSD, but those aren't working for some reason. So yes, I'm currently using the previous and well-working 40GB SSD, but I'm lost
