May 27, 2009As a newbie to the Mac but with Windows experience since 1990, I am finding the most subtle things the hardest to get used to. This post is about dragging items.
1. The first thing I am still getting used to in dragging a single item: in Windows a highlighted item can be immediately "clicked and
dragged." In OS X, it appears that very often you cannot drag an item unless you pause for a fraction of a second while on the item. However, the "fraction" seems to vary, sometimes being very short, and otherwise being longer. The result is I have to frequently try several times to get the object to drag.
2. Even worse, when multiple items are selected, it seems that sometimes they cannot be dragged no matter how long I pause. The action of attempting to drag simply un-highlights the items.
While I am typing this comment, I am trying to drag items in Mail. I have multiple items selected, and most of the time, anything I do to try to drag them fails, but simply reverses the selection on some items. On a rare occasion, the drag function works. It seems sometimes if I start the drag slowly, it works. I am still assuming that this failure is due to my lack of skills. But my instinct is to consider this a bug. What is the correct way to drag multiply selected items reliably?

Dec 1, 2008I frequently want to grab a ton of junk on say my desktop and sort them into folders. Process is "make new folder, select all the items I want to go in it, drag them to it, name folder, move folder to where I want". What I want it to be able to do is select all those items and have a contextual menu command "Make New folder from selected". Ideally, popping up an Open/Save dialog letting me choose where to put the new folder and allowing me to name it. On closing dialog, I have my new renamed folder with all my selected stuff in it, wherever I want on my HD with no extra dragging and clicking. Does this sound worthwhile to anyone else? Am I missing some way that this can be done? Seemed like an obvious thing to me, was kind of puzzled to discover (AFAIK) no way to do it.

Jun 24, 2010I had to replace my hard drive on my new iMac and after the Time Machine restore Apreture is telling me it can't locate any of the master images. They are there as I have verified but it tells me they are not there. The preview images are showing up, but the link to the masters has been broken.
When I try and do a reveal in finder the error message tells me the volume is currently off-line.

Feb 15, 2012This has stuggled me for around a year, ever since i upgrade to lion when it is available, i found its hard for me to change my wallpaper to the images located in my aperture library.It's simplely not showing up as a available option in the preference panel desktop image section. Â Â
No offense, but dont tell me to do the repair disk, repair permission thing, or change the preview as "always" in the sharing section. Â Â
This is what i've done:Â
1>I've done format the entier hard drive "7 pass erase" around 3 times
2>Fixed the permission, repaired disk, runned daily weekly monthly script for thousands of times.
3>Reinstalled the OS thousands of times.
4>Repair Permission, Repair Database, Rebuid Database for Aperture 3 thousands of time.
5>Runned ACL repair under recovery mode 3 times in Apple Terminal.
6>Called Apple Support, reached to 3 different senior technicients
7>Done the research online
8>Tried everything i can.Â
I like photography, and i have a 70G aperture library. now i can only export the image into a folder and choose the image from the folder to do it. I know I know, It's not a big deal, just wallpaper. I'd done some programing for 2 3 years. It's kind of a habbit for me to debug the thing, i feel like this is issue for me, which makes me uncomfortable.

May 18, 2012I use Google's Google Play and I made the mistake of Downloading my Library from the Google play Music Manager in my (early 2011) MacBook Pro's System Preferences after I already had my music library in iTunes so now I have a duplicate of every single song and not sure how to delete them. I tried using the the advice offered on here where I sort all music based on DATE but every song has the same date and about the same time so that won't work for me. Other then downloading a paid program I'm not sure what my options here are. That being said, let me know if anyone know what options other then paying for a program to do this for me or worse... having me click on every single duplicate song individually until I finish?Â

Aug 4, 2009I had a folder (called "Other") with read and write access for Joseph (Me), everyone, (unknown), and Joseph (Me, again), but for some reason I couldn't write to the folder - I only had read access even though three forms of me had read and write. I tried changing the permissions of the parent folder to read and write (which they already were for everyone, but I added my account too for the hell of it) and then applying it to the enclosed items, but that just added "wheel" to the Repairing permissions did nothing, I ended up just setting my entire Macintosh HD to read and write for everyone and a few other people, then applying to enclosed items. That worked, but then for some reason it changed my external hard drive's permissions to "Custom" for Me, Me, unknown, and everyone. I can't access my external at all now, and nothing happens when I try to change its permissions. There was a little checkbox that said "Ignore permissions"

OS X :: File Sharing Checkbox Refuses To Check?
Aug 7, 2010I had set up file sharing between our two macs in our home (both 10.6) with no problems.But our iMac's disk blew out and was replaced, with 10.6 reinstalled.
Now I find that the iMac can see my MacBook Pro, but when I try to enable file sharing on the iMac, the checkbox for File Sharing refuses to take a check: it briefly displays a - sign then reverts to blank. I have triple-checked that the security settings are the same on the two machines, and that the file permissions for the listed files are okay (ie, the same on the two computers).I presume I am missing something on permissions, but I am at a total loss as to what.

Jul 6, 2006I'm looking to convert a whole slew of telephone numbers in Address Book to make them Skype compliant. There are a variety of find-replace patterns I want to use. One example is an area code in parentheses. For example, I want to change (215) to +1 215. There are thousands of numbers in my address book to change, and manually is not an option. Address Book doesn't have any way to do this on its own. I checked out Automator but it doesn't have many useful Address Book functions. I dug around for a bit online for an AppleScript that would just go straight to editing the AddressBook.data file, but didn't find anything.
I tried to edit the AddressBook.data file myself using TextWrangler, but when I saved it, AddressBook.data's icon changed from a blank file icon to a plain text file icon and Address Book stalled out while opening, necessitating a force quit. So I reverted to my back up and am no closer to solving the problem. Is there a way to do a find-replace or a batch change in Address Book, whetever via AppleScript or otherwise? If not, how can I edit AddressBook.data and save it without it become a text file that Address Book chokes on?
