ITunes For Mac :: Smart Playlists Empty With Live Update

Have several smart play lists that select songs based on when they were last played, i.e. include songs that have not been played within the last 24 hours. When I sync my iPhone or iPad, all the music and the play lists are copied to the devices. However, the playlists are now empty on the devices (full on my Mac). If Live Updating is unchecked the play lists are full. Playing the a few songs on these lists and then checking Live Updating does not fix the issue. How can I get a smart playlist to use live updating and sync to iPhone or iPad?Â

If I create a smart playlist in itunes and deselect live updating then how exactly does the smart playlist load up?
The reason I ask is that started setting up Smart Playlists for all of the artists on my computer and they're all set to live update which is consequently slowing down my itunes. I realize that I may not necessarily need that. My question is though...how exactly would I go about manually updating a smart playlist that has live updating turned off?

I'm trying to create a smart playlist with the following properties:Â
1) Every time I play it, it selects a different random set of songs.
2) The playlist plays for a fixed duration, then shuts off. (I like to go to sleep to music, but it wakes me up in the middle of the night if it plays for too long.)Â
The best I've been able to come up with is to set "not played in the last xx days", "Limit to yy minutes selected by random", and "live updating". However, there's a problem with this: as soon as one song has played, it's purged from the list, which causes live updating to replace it with a new song. As a result, this creates a list that plays forever, since new songs are continuously added to replace the ones that have been played.Â
I tried turning off live updating, but then I'm stuck with the same songs over and over. I also know about the trick of just using "select random" and deleting the contents of the list, so that live update will repopulate it, but that won't work on an iPod without doing it in iTunes and then re-syncing.Â

I am trying to figure out how the live updating feature on smart playlists works.
I created a simple smart playlist with one rule "Media Kind is Music". I ticked the box to "limit to 25 items selected by random". I also ticked the box for "live updating". When I clicked OK to save the smart playlist, iTunes selected 25 songs from my music library and put them in the smart playlist. I then synced the smart playlist to my iPhone. The same 25 songs appeared in the smart playlist on my iPhone. So far, so good.
Then I played a number of the songs in the smart playlist on my iPhone. I also played songs from the smart playlist in iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I exited and re-entered iTunes multiple times. I re-synced my iPhone several times as well. And guess what? The smart playlist, both in iTunes and on the iPhone, still contains the same list of 25 songs that were selected when I first created the smart playlist.

Suddenly I am not able to modify the settings for any of my Smart Playlists. I am able to get to the update mode (command+i) however if I modify the smart parameters it does not save or change the results of the settings.

I'm currently using a combination of normal and smart playlists in iTunes. I've got normal playlists for all my albums, and smart playlists for music I have as an album but never really listen to as an album, for example, my Jazz smart playlist consists every song with the genre as "Jazz".
Needless to say, this takes a lot of organizing but it's definitely worth it. Now I've been thinking about making them all Smart Playlists, this would make organizing even more miticulous, but there wouldn't be "accidents", like songs I accidently deleted from a playlist when hitting the delete button or w/ever.
Since smart playlists update on-the-spot if you add new songs, I was wondering if they use more CPU? iTunes is already a memory/resource hog, will adding hundreds of smart playlists make a big difference in resources used?

I created a smart playlist on my iTunes 10.6 that populates the list with randomly selected tunes that do not contain specific genres nor were played in the last 90 days to fill 3 hours. The songs that populate the list seem to meet those criteria. However, the songs that populate the list on my iPhone look nothing like the list on iTunes and includes songs I listened to yesterday even though I synced last night and this morning.Â

This happened this morning. The smart playlists are all in my itunes and show up on my device in itunes but they will not show up on my phone. All of the non smart playlists are there. Ive updated itunes and tried syncing numerous times and nothing is bringing them back on my phone.

On my setup on Windows it loads the playlists fine, the newest first in Itunes 9 itself but dis-ordered on my ipods. On the Ipod touch v1 with 3.1.1 Firmware I can't fathom how it's sorted, it's totally scrambled the order but on the Ipod Classic V1 160Gb it appears to be sorted via artist. Even if you re-sort it by clicking the date added column the order of the playlist and resync it makes no difference to either of them. Neither does deselecting, resyncing, unplugging -replugging adding back and syncing again.
Anyone else have this issue or am I in the minority of one?
EDIT: Looking at the Apple Support Forums it seems like Smart Playlists are broken for many users on both Windows and Mac. Itunes 9.01 will be on it's way shortly!

I use iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on Mac. I spend some time googling and searching for solutions for my problem, but everything is either outdated or simply doesn't work. I have a smart playlist with all songs that are matched on iTunes Match, but which are below 256k bitrate. I want to delete them from the library, so I can download new 256k versions of them. This is supposedly possible by using Option + Delete, but that doesn't work for me. I also tried all kinds of other combinations like SHIFT + Option + Delete or CRTL + Option + Delete and none of them work.

I am exploring the possibility of scripting the creation of smart playlists in iTunes. As I understand it this can only be achieved with GUI scripting. I have come across a couple of threads which suggest this can be achieved:Â

however both generate an error for me. The problem appears to be around the line "tell scroll area 1 of group 1 of window 1". I get the error: System Events got an error: Can't get group 1 of window 1 of process "iTunes". Invalid index.Â

I recently got a new mac and moved all my music over manually from my old mac.after finally setting it all up, and finally getting my playlists working in iTunes, I synced my iPhone 3GS with the new computer.Before syncing, I selected about 30 of my playlists to go onto the iPhone by checking their boxes under the "music" tab of my iPhone in iTunes on my mac. All the music in those playlists copied to my iPhone, and the titles of the playlists show up on my iPhone, BUT THEY ARE EMPTY..I've re-syncing like 30 times over the space of a month, and no deal. On my Mac, the playlists are just fine!Â

Long time itunes user and have never had any issues creating a smart playlist untill recently. I have a large libary 16,500+, am a itunes match user, and do use icloud. For the last couple weeks any time i try to create a smart playlist the results are always empty. I have tried simple requests like artist contain so and so, genre is rock, time is over 1:00 etc etc and nothing will populate. Also if i edit and old smart playlist by adding another condition it wipes it out for example i have a playlist with rock songs if i add the condition to only have songs over 1 minute i get an empty set. I'm sure it is a simple solution but i can not figure out what i have done. Only major changes i have made recently are getting an ipad and joining itunes match other than that i have made no changes to my settings or network (at least that i know of).

After the new iTunes Update this week, the update deleted my personalized music playlists, went back to the default playlists, and all the albums I deleted doubles of songs are all back since the new update! Is there a way to fix this or am I going to have to go back through and reorganize my entire library by hand again? It still shows up on correct on my iPhone, it's just on my mac that I'm having the issue.Â
P.s. iTunes comment: I don't like how if an album has multiple artists on different songs, iTunes separates the album's songs and shows them separated in the Albums list. I have an album to listen to the ALBUM, not separated by artists. Is there a setting or something to change that?

So I was attempting to back up my serato scratch and dragged the icon from the dock and dropped it into a desktop folder, and there was a "poof" sound and image display that occurred. I am trying to figure out a) what that means, and b) how to restore my original information i.e crates, songs, song descriptions, etc onto my Serato Scratch program as it was previously.

In iStat Pro, what's the purpose of setting "S.M.A.R.T Update Interval" to something other than "off"? I understand that this may cause iStat to query SMART in my HD (MBP Early 2009) at the set time interval. But what does that give me? iStat doesn't show any new info anywhere after I set the update interval to 5 mins. At least, I haven't noticed anything new. Is it supposed to display the HD temperature somewhere? Is there something else I have to turn on? I'm using iStat Pro 4.9.

I use iCloud for syning Mail & Notes. Contacts, Calendars and Documents & Data. I am 100% sure that in the past in iTunes/Info tab "Sync contacts" and "Sync Mail Accounts" showed all my different Address Book groups and different email account to be synced. Since recently they seem disappeared and I only see my different Calendars to be synced. Why are both Sync contacts empty and Sync Mail Accounts both emtpy/dimmed. BTW if I check Sync contacts I get a message that they are synced through iCloud etc. etc. Now if I enable on my Mac another email account in Apple Mail it is not added to my iPhone/iPad anymore. How can I change that ?Â

I want to keep the order of one of my playlists so it cannot be altered if i click the wrong button...in order of the plays/songs.
I heard "Copy to Play Order? works but doesn't seem to fix the playlist not to move. I just want it to be secure in the order. Also is there a way to make Itunes a mix of my own, like the Genius Mixes? Or a way to save the playlist order? So if something happen i could get it back?

I know some of you out there will probably think I'm nuts, but please read the whole message first.
I have been disabled for a number of years, and recently a friend of mine purchased for me a refurbished MacBook Pro 15" 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo laptop, which, as you might guess I love, since my last Mac laptop was the 1999 PPC G3 400Mhz that croaked about 5 years ago.
Fortunately, before that late, semi-great machine died, I was able to copy to an external drive my entire iTunes folder, which contains the "iTunes Music Library" file as well as the "iTunes Music" folder with more than 1,000 songs in it. I do NOT have any written documentation on my playlists.
Now, many years later, I have this great machine that I love, and I cannot for the life of me figure a way to import my Mac OS 9 iTunes PLAYLISTS into Mac OS X iTunes 9. Additionally, the song file folders, structured perfectly in Mac OS 9, now get recreated in truly bisarre ways in iTunes 9, where I get multiple folders by the same artist if that artist has ever done a duet with someone, and soundtracks have been broken out into individual folders by each artist on the soundtrack, instead of all the songs being placed into ONE folder with the soundtrack's name on it, as it is in the Mac OS 9 iTunes Music folder.
All I want to do is recreate my library and playlists as they were in Mac OS 9, using iTunes 9 in Mac OS X 10.6.

Recently any new playlists I create in iTunes are not appearing as an option to sync to my iPhone or iPad. I am manually managing music and have other playlists checked to sync and they work fine. But, if I create a new playlist it simply does not show up. If I delete a playlist it disappears from the available options to sync but nothing when I create a new one.

I am having a very bad moment right now.I have nearly 4TB of content,movies, music apps..etc.I have not made any changes to my MAC, I installed the latest version of iTunes when it came out.Everyhthing was working perfectly fine, until tonight, simply upon closing Itunes and reopening,my iTunes was like it was just installed, there is no content in my library, (Everything in my external HD's, just not on itunes)Â only the three tabs that show content that come enabled by default are on. It is as if I had just installed Itunes..
My nearly 10,000 ratings are gone, playlists, and playcounts from two years. anybody give me some insight into how to readd my content without losing my valubable information that I just listed.I repeat, I have not installed or made any changes in weeks, it just happened upon closing and reopening.

Having had some problems I used the Disk Utility to check the HD and it told me to reformat it. I copied the entire disk to an external drive, reformatted the HD then downloaded a new installation of Mavericks 10.9.5 as had been previously installed. The system is now back up but how do I recover the preferences and other information to run them on the HD as before. I have simply copied most of my applications across but, for instance, my mailboxes have all gone and my signatures. The iTunes does not have my playlists etc. etc..
