I just got a new Macbook and i'm trying to transfer music I already have on my iPhone 4 from the phone to the laptop... Shouldn't it already be in my purchased folder?

I recently bought an album via iTunes Music Store on my iPhone 4S, but I can't seem to figure out why it isn't syncing to my iTunes account on my computer. I am not using iTunes Match cloud or anything. This was happening even with automatic downloads set on iTunes, but I have since turned it off because I have bandwidth limits for my satellite Internet. One of the reasons I bought the album on my iPhone was so I could download it at a public WiFi.

All of my music purchased from iTunes is gone from my iPhone. When I open the app the page is blank. On my iPad I can open the app and see the music but cannot play anything or go to another page. I bought an iPhone 4S about a month ago and used iTunes from my old pc to sync songs. More recently, I bought a Macbook Pro. When I try to sync songs into the iPhone through the Mac iTunes, nothing is transferred. The pictures are syncing correctly through iTunes, but songs on the iTunes library are not. I previously had a Macbook with all of my music from my iPhone stored on it. When getting a new computer I logged into my existing iTunes account but not all of the songs that I had on my old computer and phone showed up. I noticed that the songs that aren't on my new computer are ones that were not purchased on iTunes (ex: downloaded from a cd). My iPhone 5c used to sync with my old Windows laptop via iTunes and both devices held all music information on them such as iTunes rating, playlist information and the selected songs to be synced (there are more songs on my iTunes on my laptop than my iPhone). All of these songs are also saved on an external hard drive. None were purchased through iTunes.
When my old Windows laptop died, it died abruptly so I did not have chance to consolidate the iTunes media folder. I have now bought a new MacBook Air to replace my old Windows laptop.
When I plug in my iPhone 5c to my new MacBook Air, when iTunes offers to sync it advises all information on my iPhone will be lost.
Is it possible to transfer the ratings and playlists from my iPhone to iTunes on my MacBook Air, at least for the corresponding songs that exist on my iPhone? Note I have the original songs on an external hard drive so the song files themselves do not have to copy across. All the files in the iPhone exist in the external hard drive.

I just attempted to update my iPhone to IOS 5.1, but before the update started I got this message: "There are purchased items on the iPhone “Charles Bond’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. I don't understand this message. I thought that if I bought a song or an app from my iPhone it would be brought to iTunes on my MacBook when I did a synch, or direclty from the store. How would I identify what items the message is referring to, and how would I add them to my library?

1) Up until today (6/8/12) my purchases would show up in my library after downloading. After purchasing some songs today, I did not see them in the library, but I did find them under 'Purchases'. And the little iCloud icon seems to be 'working'. I have the most recent iTunes (10.6.1), scanned for viruses, and haven't been doing anything differently. I am using a 13" MacBook Pro (early 2011) with Lion v10.7.4 installed.
2) iTunes usually shows a song as 'Purchased' in the Store if you already downloaded it (I assume to prevent duplicate downloading). But a few minutes after purchasing some music, the Store still shows it as available for purchase.
The only thing I have done recently is clean out some cache files in my browser (using Intego). Could this be the culprit? If so, how do I remedy these issues?

I purchased an audiobook on my office computer, but I use my home computer to sync with my iPhone. Now I can't download the book to my home computer without having to pay again AND I can't sync with the office computer without erasing all of the info and apps from my home computer. ITunes considers my home computer as the master library. I didn't know all of this and, quite frankly, don't understand why it has to be this way.
