IMac :: Fans Are Dumb, Run When Not Needed, And Don't When Do?

Nov 7, 2009

Any tips on how to fix this?Usually, the CPU fan is stuck at 4500RPMs constantly, CPUs 28?? it runs the fan at 5000RPMs.But whenever the CPU is cooking, such as 92?, it won't run at all, but the other two fans will be at full blast.

Any tips on how to fix this? I took the computer to the apple store 3 times for this issue but every time they "could not recreate the issue". The last time the replaced the fans in the computer, but that didn't fix anything.Anything that would point me in the direction of fixing this? It's just melting itself. Alum. iMac.

Plus, the battery no longer works at all, so I have to use the AC adapter if I want to use the laptop at all--NOT GOOD!Does anyone know if this dumb little piece of plastic can be replaced, and if so how? MacBook Pro :: Fans Suddenly Making Wierd Noises / Fans Are Hitting Something?

Jul 27, 2009

the other day i wake up and open my macbook pro and immediately heard the fan making noises ive never heard it make before. i checked istat pro. the fans were going at 2000rpm. this is when i started to get concerned since i would never hear the fans at that speed before. the difference was day and night. it sounds like the one or both of the fans are hitting something. i always hear the noise when i start up or wake up from sleep and after a while (30 minutes to an hour) it usually goes away but has come back once without me turning off or putting the computer to sleep. its a refurbished less than a little more than a month ago. im hoping its just some dirt that made it through keyboard and will eventually go away because i dont want to send my machine in to get manhandled by apple repair. has anyone had something like this happen before?

I have power to fans. 5 and 12 volts. No beeps. Pressed SMU button as well, and nothing changes. Don't see any bulging caps. Someone else changed a few before I got it. Also jiggled RAM chips.

IMac :: Controlling Max Temp Of Fans / Booting From External HDD

Nov 20, 2010

I have a 2007 Intel 24" iMac (Last of the white plastic editions) and I've recently had troubles with the 7600GT Graphics card. The computer would get strange artifacts all over the screen, before crashing. Unfortunately, it is out of Applecare, so I took it into a shop and had the card replaced. Upon receiving it back, they told me that they replaced the graphics card, but still found problems with it booting up inconsistently. After some testing, they realised it was the Hard Drive controller at fault, and put my harddrive in an external USB enclosure and booted it off that instead. This was an easier solution than replacing the entire logic board, they told me. (and they gave me the enclosure for free).

Now I've brought it home, and set it all up, only to find that the HDD fans are constantly spinning at 5600 RPM, which is deafeningly loud, even so over my room fan. I presume this is because there is no longer any hard drive controller/hard drive in there. I've installed SMC Fan Control, but to my dismay you can only set the minimum fan speed, and not the max. If possible, i'd like to set the max fan speed at a much lower rate, without needing to open up the iMac. So my questions are:
Is there a way I can set the max fanspeed for the HDD, or disable it since there isn't one in there anyway? And is there a better solution for booting my iMac OS onto an external HDD? (i.e. Should I look into buying a firewire 800 drive enclosure instead of this USB 2.0 one?)

OS X :: IMac Fans Running At Full Speed - Reset SMC?

Feb 28, 2009

I've got a little problem with my iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Nvidia Geforce 8800GS 500GB. When I start it up, the fans start blowing at full speed. I checked the apple support page for support and found my problem with all the symptoms being correct. The support said I had to reset the SMC by shutting down the iMac, then removing the power cord and all the other one's, wait 15 seconds and then put the power cord and the other one's in respectively. I did this almost 10 times, but my iMac still won't stop making those annoying noises. Maybe it has to do with the SMC fancontrol app my brother installed lately.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Failing To Boot Up - Fans Whirring Fast

Dec 16, 2008

Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.

I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).

IMac :: RPM Speeds Of Fans Increase And Boot Time Doubled

Jun 23, 2009

My iMac seems to be a lot more noisier (a low humming noise, maybe the fans), than it was when I purchased it in a couple of months ago. When I first got it, it was the quietness and boot time which I was impressed with more than anything. Now it's noisier and boot times have doubled. I have noticed that the fans for for HD and CPU constantly spin at 1200rpm or more, with no applications open and as soon as I switch on my iMac.

IMac :: Fans Started At Full Speed When Waking From Sleep

Nov 5, 2009

I have a 24" mid-2009 iMac, bought in June. It's behaving oddly over the past week or so. It fails to wake on sleep on the first attempt, but always succeeds on the second. When I say fails though, I mean that it *does* wake up, but goes back to sleep again after a few seconds. The other issue happened today, when I woke it up, in a cold room, the fans started up at full speed (I assume). It sounded terrifying to me as my iMac has never got that loud - not even playing games. I restarted it and it was the same, but died down after a while.

IMac (Intel) :: Installed SSD / Constant Fans / No HDD Temp Sensor

Dec 10, 2014

I've recently installed a Crucial M500 512 GB SSD into my 21.5" 2011 iMac. I've done this to quite a few iMacs, and am well aware that some have a temperature sensor on the factory-installed hard drive. This one, however, did not, and now that the SSD is installed, I'm getting constantly running fans.

The fans run whether it's booted from the internal SSD, an external FireWire HD, or even if it's sitting in Target Disk Mode or on the Boot Options screen, so I feel like it's hardware-related.

IMac :: Fans Spinning At 3500 RPMs Constantly / Not Slowing Down By Any Means

Feb 4, 2009

My parents have an older 20-inch white Intel iMac that has run great through the years. But about a week ago it just started spinning the CPU fans up to 3500-4000 RPMs and it won't bring them back down. Istat shows that the CPU temp is around 90 degrees and the computer remains cool to the touch.

So it isn't overheating. My parents keep it off most of the time because they don't want to ruin it, but they're planning on using it in their business they're trying to start up. We've done some web searches and nothing seems to fix it.

OS X :: Info Needed On Bad Blocks On HD?

Jan 27, 2010

A recently acquired hard drive - a basically new drive - appears to have been causing my mbp to shut down randomly (different drive and the problem goes away). I ran a surface scan on it using tech tool pro 5 and found just one bad sector on the drive.

I zeroed the drive using the binary 0000 pattern option in tech tool (1 pass) and ran the surface scan again and this time the surface scan gets the all clear. Should I be worried about the drive? Is it likely to cause the same shut downs on my mbp? I know the only way to know for sure is to try it, but I tell ya, installing a hard drive on the mbp is time consuming!!

Hardware :: The Ipod Needed To Update To 10.4.11?

Jan 15, 2009

I recently bought an ipod touch (32G) and began the installation process on my Mac Pro (8 core 1st release). Upon hooking up the ipod, the OS (Tiger) told me that I needed to update to 10.4.11 (as well as itunes), since I was currently running 10.4.9. I proceeded to download the update, and the installation began once it had downloaded. Here is where the problems began. What I failed to notice was that I had less than 300 MB of space left on my hard drive. The installation got to a point where it couldnt go any further when I realized what the problem was.

I tried adding things to the trash to free up space, however, when I tried to dump the trash, it crashed Finder and restarted it, never allowing it to empty the trash. Hence, I was halfway through the installation, and my 8-Core was STUCK. After several hours of it doing NOTHING, I had to force quit the installation, and reboot the system. Needless to say, the Mac was pissed. I repeatedly go the kernal panic, without fail. (That made me PANIC too but I tried to remain calm as I had a lot of work on the main drive that was irreplaceable!) I ordered up a new SATA drive, and upon arrival, I hooked up my older Powerbook G4 to the Mac Pro via firewire and booted up the Mac Pro so that the Powerbook recognized all of the drives. Thankfully I still had all the data there, so I made a copy using Carbon Copy Clone to an external USB bare drive, in case something else happened.

After the cloning was completed, I ejected the clone drive, and using disk utility, I erased the OS drive in the Mac Pro, got my Tiger install disc, and rebooted the Mac Pro to do a fresh install. But the Mac Pro just flashed the file with a question mark on the screen. The SuperDrive was spinning away, but it never engages the install process. So I put the Mac Pro back into firewire mode to see if the disc was there. This time I hooked it up to a G4 tower via firewire, and it recognized the original OS drive (now bare), the two additional drives in the Mac Pro, as well as the Tiger install disc.

So I though, maybe I can try installing it from my G4 via firewire. NOPE! Not an option! So I ejected everything and tried to boot the Mac Pro to the install disc again, both by just starting it up and also by holding down the C key to try to engage the install disc, but NO LUCK. I am so frustrated and cannot figure out a solution! Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try? I have some pretty time sensitive work that needs to get done, and the deadlines are looming quick. I would hate to think I have 8-cores of JUNK

Hardware :: Printer/Scanner Guidance Needed

Aug 28, 2010

i am in very awkward situation.

i have old dell desktop (without monitor), lexmark all in one printer (which does not support Mac OS), Samsung laser printer (which also does not support Mac OS), Windows Laptop and a NEW iMac with wireless broadband router.

Question is because the old printers are not compatible with new imac, I need some solution to print and scan.

My options are:

- Connect old printers to desktop PC tower and connect PC tower to router via ethernet and use printers via sharing.

- Connect printers to windows laptop as needed but this restricts the use.

- Get rid of the two printers and desktop tower (which is not needed for anything else) and buy a new wireless all in one printer which works over both mac and windows. I can get 30 for the old desktop at local trader but nothing for printers as they are deemed worthless.

MacBook Pro :: When Dealing With Genius Nagging Sometimes Needed

Jan 14, 2011

Figured I would share my recent apple genius bar apt. I went in due to a annoying line on my late 2009 15" macbook pro. Noticed it anytime that the screen was dark or dimmed. So I took in the MacBook pro and the genius look at the issue examined claimed he could not see a thing and made me feel rather stupid. Also pointed out that my mbp was making a crack sound ever since I installed my incase hard case. He sad that is too bad its the case nothing else. Funny thing is when it made the sound another genius look at the computer and said hey that's not normal. So he felt rather dumb, but continued on with his genius opinion that it was fine. He hand it back and says everything looks and works perfect sorry you wasted a trip. So I get the mbp back open it up in the apple store and go over and tell him the mark is right on the screen and he comes ever and says nope, so he calls over two more genius and they look at the screen and say yep write him up a repair order.

I smiled exactly when the guy said that from 30 seconds of observation. The other genius just walked away and ignored me after that happened. Today I went and picked up the MBP and they replaced the screen and found out they also replaced my super drive. I was not aware there was any issues with the drive at all, but they fixed it. Also my computer is under applecare if anyone was wondering. Trying this up has made me notice I need to work in sentence structure and I cant help to think how many people don't nag the genius after they get a deny from them. Its almost like a god complex they say no its a no. Repair bill came to just under 700 dollars and I was wondering if there is anymore issues with this MBP can I request a replacement system? My apple car expires in Nov.
