OS X :: Getting DISH DVR Onto Home Network

Mar 30, 2009

I just found out I can plug my DISH DVR into my home network (gets rid of my programming access fee and gives me access to an app that lets me program it remotely). The problem is that my modem/AEBS is on the other side of the room, and I'm trying to avoid drilling holes to run an ethernet cable under the house, etc.

One question...my computer is just a few feet from the DVR. Is there a way to plug the DVR into the computer and access the router that way? Anyone have another idea for connecting the two? My modem isn't wireless, so I can't move the AEBS to the DVR and have it connect wirelessly to the modem. I could get a wireless modem and do that, but I'm trying to avoid spending much on more equipment.

IMac :: Unable To Connect To WPA Network

I have a iMac G4 I'm trying to restore so I can browse the web and do simple word processing with. It currently has OS X 10.4.11 on it. It won't connect to a WPA network, but it will connect to a WEP network. Is this an issue with the Airport card or with Tiger. Should I upgrade to OS X 10.5?

OS X :: Unable To Connect IMac To PC On Wireless Network

Dec 11, 2007

I am trying to connect my new iMac (Leopard OS) to a PC running Windows XP Home Edition using the wireless router. I have the PC connected to the internet via modem/router (supplied by Aliant, the SpeedStream 6520). I have been able to "get on" the internet with iMac using the wireless router. However, I can't get the PC and iMac to connect together over the wireless router inorder to share files etc. On the PC side:

1) I disabled the Windows firewall
2) have set up and named a sharing folder
3) have set up a "work group" name
4) believe I have the correct user name and password
5) not sure about the "network" name, (?SSID) information.
6) have a # with several periods in it that I don't know if this is the computer ID, IP address, or one of the above items, or if they are all one and the same.

On the iMac side:
1) have the IP address of the iMac
2) I have tried "connect to server" but am unable
3) I have never been able to see a "shared" section on the left side of the finder screen.

I have read the thread by "edesignuk". However I did not "put your mac in the same workgroup as your windows PC" as I couldn't find the correct screens on the iMac, and also in phone discussion with Apple help they said they had never done that and advised against it!

IMac :: Not Connect To Home WiFi Network - Timed Out

Mar 24, 2010

Yesterday I got my new iMac 21,5'. After starting it up, the airport would not work. The open network (not password protected) was detected, but every attempt to connect to it ended with a "timed out" error message. I tried to deactivate and reactivate the airport a few times. With no luck. Both my iphone and a cheap netbook would get a valid connection in the meantime. So it's not a network issue.

It's a d-link router and it's about half a meter from the imac. My previous macbook with tiger worked perfectly with this connection. I tried to change the wireless channel from 7 to 6 and this did not solve the issue. Or at least not right away. I tried again after say 15 minutes, and it worked. However, tried again in the morning, and got the "timed out" error message one more time. I have installed the airport software update

IMac :: Unable To Connect To Existing Home Wireless Network

Feb 6, 2010

We have a PC in the upstairs office with cable/DSL router for Internet (through Comcast). This service also has a wireless connection. We have a Macbook laptop which connects effortlessly to our home network and we use it all over the house. We simply clicked the internet symbol on the top right (looks like a little amphitheater), selected out network, entered the password and have been connected ever since.

Today we brought home a new iMac and set it up in basement office. Tried the same routine. Clicked on the internet symbol, selected our network, noticed that the signal is just as strong as it is upstairs, typed in password but that's as far as we get.

I've gone the rounds with the Assist and the Utility features. I've shut the Airport on and off. I've tried setting up a new network. I do notice that the iMac has a "self-assigned" ISP "and cannot connect to the Internet." Does this mean I can't ever connect? Do we need to replace the self-assigned ISP with our Comcast IP address?

I've read here and there that our router might have Macs blocked and we could add this iMac as a secure system to get on the network. But we haven't played with the router's settings because we wouldn't know how. Besides, the Macbook connects fine.

Does this have anything to do with TimeMachine?

Software :: Unable To Connect To Network - Network Icon Missing In Finder

Dec 5, 2006

I have a home network running 3 PC's(with XP) and 2 Macs (with Tiger OS X 10.4.8). Mysteriously one of my Macs(MacMini) refuses to show a Network icon in the Finder sidebar? I have used the Go > Network menu to try to get a Network icon, but this does work. Yesterday I did a scheduled Mac OS system update, and it seems that since then I have not been able to see/get a Network icon in my Finder.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? PS - I am able to use the old 'GO > Connect to Computer' method, then type in the smb://myOfficePc, and access shared files on other PCs on the network. So networking is configured properly on this MacMini.

OS X :: G5 Can't Connect To Network?

Mar 20, 2010

I have a G5 with a PCI N card. It is an Encore ENLWI-N model. It's been working fine for the past couple of months that I've had it, but suddenly it can't connect to my network. By not connecting, I mean in the Ralink Utility it shows the different networks in the area, and shows their encryption type, but when I double click on mine, enter in my password, it doesn't connect. I've tried restarting G5, restarting router, taking off the password and then trying to connect, but it still won't connect.

My thoughts are that since it shows the networks in my area, then it can't be the actual Wireless antennae, since it's finding the networks, right? And since I haven't made any changes in the past few weeks to my network (Other than to troubleshoot this) it can't be my router.

OS X :: 2 Macs, Same Network, Only One Can Connect?

Oct 21, 2010

I have two macs and strangely one mac is unable to connect to the internet via airport while the other one can via airport. What gives? What I'm observing is that when I open up Network Preferences in both macs, the Airport says its connected on the working one while it says no IP Address on the one that's not working.

However, when I change locations so that both macs have the same locations, the one that's not working says, Self-Assigned IP, yet, still no connection. One more thing, I also notice that in advanced settings under TCP/IP, both macs have two different IPv4's.

OS X :: Can't Connect To Windows Network

Feb 23, 2009

I'm a mac noob. Actually I'm pretty technologically challenged full stop. But I got a mac about a month ago. There's not problem connecting to the internet, it picked it up straight away. However I live in a house full of windows computers which are all wirelessly networked. Sometimes I can connect to them (for no rhyme or reason) and sometimes I can't. I don't particularly care that I can't reach them but I need to be able to connect to my printer. I just plugged my printer straight in the USB and it worked so they're compatible. But my network and computers aren't in the side bar of the finder at the moment. I try clicking "go" and then "connect to server" but I have no idea what my server address is. Is it my IP address or what? as I said I'm technologically challenged.

MacBook Pro :: Network Connect When No One Else Is Using It?

Oct 16, 2009

I moved into a new house (with 5 house mates) and am having massively frustrating network issues. When I try to connect to the network, i get a "connection timeout" error. If i try many times (like 30), eventually I get on but the connection gets dropped after a few minutes.

The strangest part about it is when I am the only one home, it works fine. But if a roommate is home and on the network, I run into these issues. For example right now, when no one else is home, it works flawlessly. But at night, if another roommate is on it, it barely works at all. It only affects me, everyone else uses it without any problems.I tried changing routers to an airport express and it STILL happens. This problem ONLY occurs on this network (not in class or in the office).

I'm sure it must be a settings issue since its only my macbook and only on this one network. I dont know much about networking but I feel like my macbooks info is conflicting with the other laptops and wont function.Any ideas? I'm ready to snap this thing in half (warranty expired last month)
