I had a first generation intel imac 2.0 core duo (not core 2 duo) since 2006. Well now I am in the market for a new imac but I'm trying to figure out whether I should go with the C2D or i5/i7.
I use my imac for audio recording and it has served me well. Although its age is showing which is causing me to find new creative ways to stretch its CPU power, I wonder if a 3.06 GHz is a good enough boost (from my current 2.0 Ghz).
What connection type would you choose when buying a new external hard drive?USB 2 isn't very fast, but Apple seems to be de-emphasizing Firewire and eSATA isn't even an option on anything except the Mac Pros AFAICT.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI would appreciate some advice on an upgrade path for my Mac Mini. I have a 1.83GHz Mini with 80gb hard drive and 1GB memory. I'm using it for a HTPC and it has worked out well for this purpose. I recently tried to install Vista/Fusion on the Mini and found it to be so slow as to be unusable. Having used Vista and Fusion on my 2.2Ghz MBP with 4GB memory, I guess the memory is what is causing the problem since on MBP it works well. I have 2GB (2 x 1GB) of memory that I pulled from the MBP which I figured I would put into the Mini when I finally got the nerve to attempt an upgrade. Is 2GB enough to run Vista with Fusion? Its free so I would prefer to use it instead of spending about $45 for 4GB of new memory. Since I will be opening the Mini I was going to change the hard drive. With my HTPC setup I have about 2TB of external storage and just wanted to put in a larger and possibly faster drive in the Mini while I do the upgrade. Would you recommend going to 7200rpm or just stick with 5400rpm? Is heat an issue with these drive that would cause the Mini's fan to run more often? I was looking at a WD 250GB 7200rpm drive. Another other recommendations are appreciated.

I know you can right-click on the little icon at the top of the window and it'll display the parent directories in a clickable form, but that's not very useful when I need to have the actual path (when coding, for example). Dragging the little icon won't work, either, as TextMate does weird things with that.
Basically, is there some Cmd+??? combination that'll copy the path to the clipboard?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 3 macs and I tried to sync and backup my itunes library. it seems that the iMac in the rec room - (airport) has multiple paths for my itunes library. So, when I click on Home - Music - Itunes - itunes music - I have 70 folders of artists. Then I scroll down to a music folder which then i now have 79 folders. The I scroll down to another Music folder which has 33 folders. Is there any hope for my system?

I've always hated how itunes doesn't let you order by file path. It's really an overt ommission intended to get people to abandon their folder structures and have itunes take control. Anyways I've held off since I've built up a good system which works for me and I hoped that maybe one day it would get patched into it. Well it didn't look like they'd ever put it in so I started looking around for alternatives and I found one which works.

If you're wondering how to mount an ISO image in Mac OS X, it is very easy. In the Terminal type the following command: hdiutil mount sample.iso with sample.iso being the path to the image you want to mount. After the checksum is completet, your ISO will appear mounted on your Mac OS X desktop - that's it. You you can actually mount virtually any other disk image type with hdiutil as well, so give .dmg .img a try too.

How do I see the doc path in a program like Pages? Lion's lack of "save as" means that (as far as I can see) the only way to see the path of the Pages doc I'm working on is to
1) make a duplicate
2) save the duplicate (which shows me where the original was.

I'm sure that many of you have noticed how the acceleration path for the mouse tracking on OS X feel "different" than Windows and my problem is that I prefer the OSX method of tracking and can't stand the fidgety nature of windows tracking (especially while using the new buttonless trackpads which work great on OSX but fail miserably on windows). I did a search on google and found that there are many ways to get the OS X tracking to "feel" like windows using software like USBOverdrive but I couldn't find any solutions for my problem which involves the opposite, getting windows tracking to feel like OS X.

Echo $SHELL shows me that I am using /bin/bash as shell.When I run export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin then it works and I just have to type "mysql" to get the mysql command line but as soon as I kill my terminal and open a new terminal this setting is lost.

The function of Spotlight has changed so that it no longer displays the path of a selected file. There are additional keystrokes that need to be performed to display path. Not only is this change inconvenient and frustrating it is also a productivity killer. Those 2 or 3 seconds to click on a box or do a key combo add up at the end of a long project. Does anybody know if Apple has Business Analysts that vet any proposed changes like this. If so, are the BAs keeping the path open that goes to us users.

I use plugins by onOne software amongst others and they keep putting the .log files in the root of "my documents" I like my folders tidy and this just looks scruffy.
Can I either make these hidden like in windows or can I at least make them use there own folder ie "Logs" rather than clutter. screenshot for an example

My MBP crashed, and I had to restore by dragging and dropping from an external hard drive. I fear I may have put the "library" for my user account in the incorrect place. I am trying to create and modify MS Excel Templates and am learning to do so watching Lynda.com videos and the file path they illustrate has the library listed after selecting a user...on my MBP I have library and users in the same category so when I go to my "user name" there is no library in the next category. I hypothesize that is why Excel is not automatically creating a "my templates" file for the custom templates I am creating.

If I change a folder name, while iTunes is working it's okay, it keeps playing the file just fine, but when I close iTunes and re-open it, it forgets the file path and make me find the path manually, then appears to be all right, but why it forgets the path when I close it?
I mean, even if I change the folder name (path) of the song that is actually playing, nothing happens and keep playing all the songs just fine, but if I close forgets all changes...
I installed snow leopard on my macbook pro (17") and now I can't update Path Finder. I am new to the mac (former windows user)and I just purchased Path Finder but now I can't install the dowloaded update. I have never told that purchased software does not have permissions to write to the application's directory. Below is the full update error:

I'm looking for a way to rename a batch of 30,000 photos. I have renamer but I don't think it does what I need it to do. I want to append the file name with the folder path. The photos are organized in folders which give info I want to make part of the filename itself (country, city etc.)
I am sure there is a way but...don't know how. Freeware or native apple way preferred over having to buy a new program.
