IMac :: System Cannot Find Internal Hard Drive

Sep 21, 2010

My Imac cannot find its hard drive. When I turn it on it shows a folder with a blinking question mark. And even when I go to reinstall the software it can't find a destination. What can I do?

IMac :: Second Internal Hard Drive In Place Of Optical Drive?

Feb 5, 2010

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

Intel Mac :: How To Transfer All Data From Old Internal Hard Drive To A New Internal Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2012

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

iPod shuffle, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

IMac :: Internal Hard Drive (2T) Recommendations

Nov 28, 2010

I replaced the 250G drive in my imac with a 1T (SATA) drive 2 years ago, but now the 1T drive is close to capacity. I was wondering if anyone had any internal hard drive recommendations for a 2T drive. I have been having some strange problems lately with my imac locking up with only the mouse responding that may or may not be hard drive related. I was using a Seagate drive but I would like to go with someone else.

IMac :: Internal Hard Drive Too Noisy?

Feb 8, 2009

A few days ago I replaced my internal hard drive because after 2 months from purchase it crashed. The service people replaced it with a ST3500630AS Q Media and all I can say is that it's noisy. It's really irritating because I used my mac to be completely quiet. Should I be worried and call the service to tell them what's going on or should I let it be?

Hardware :: Replacing Internal Hard Drive G4 IMAC?

Oct 12, 2008

My hard drive was going out on my older G4 Imac so I took it out and replaced with a new drive. Prior to removing the older defective drive I backed everything up on an external drive.

*I assumed I could just format the new drive and then reinstall the original OSX disks and then drag over the backup files and live happily ever after!

Problem #1: mac starts up but flashes a question mark. I insert the backup/restore disks that came with the computer (6 gray discs). This is not correct I see.

Problem #2: I am not 100% the drive I have is the right one (see below for all details). I may need a different connector? I ran the diagnostic cd that came with it and the new hard drive shows up and it says it's OK. NO other problems on the test.

Problem #3: I think the drive will/can only access 128GB of the new 200GB hard drive? if so, does this mean it will not work without an card or it will just not see/read the other storage?

Problem #4: Are the restore disks NOT the OS to reinstall? or was this on the internal hard drive already from the factory pre-loaded?

Someone said I would have to have someone make me a bootable OSX install and connect via external drive to start and then format the new drive and then re-install the OS somehow. I have been racking my brain trying all options and researching online all weekend!!

*Please let me know what the options are to fix this situation.

IMac :: Replaced System Also With Same Rumbling Hard Drive?

Aug 31, 2010

After replacing the first one due to a surprisingly noisy hard drive, and the replacement itself being returned due to having a massive hardware failure, I'm still not using the iMac I ordered over a month ago. Funny thing is, the second iMac had the same rumbling hard drive as the first which I was prepared to put up with. With no more than a few days of usage, it just stopped working. It's been over a week since the second was returned and the new one hasn't been shipped!

IMac :: External Hard Drive & System Sleep

Oct 6, 2009

I'm running out of space on my Mac Mini's disk because of all my iTunes video files. I am thinking about buying an enclosure for my spare 1 TB hard drive, and using it as the location of my iTunes library, but I wondered how it works with the Mac Mini's energy-savings mode. My Mini is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, then wake when iTunes content is requested by my Apple TV or Airport Express. I like it, because it's very energy efficient that way! My question is, will the disks also sleep along with my computer, and will they wake properly when the computer wakes?

IMac :: Catastrophic Hard Drive Failure - Unrecognized By System?

Nov 15, 2009

It looks like the hard disk in my 1.5 year old iMac (24" 3.06 C2D, running 10.6) suddenly failed today. I woke the mac up from sleep and pretty much immediately I got a spinning beach ball. The system was totally unresponsive so I did a hard reset. Unfortunately the blinking "?" folder came up on the gray screen, instead of the familiar Apple logo. Booted off the OS X disk and ran Disk Utility. The hard disk comes up as "media" and unrecognized by the system. So no First aid or formatting possible. I'm guessing the hard disk has given up but before purchasing a new one I want to rule out anything more serious like motherboard issues.

OS X :: Hard Drive Makes Clicking Sound / Move Apps From Internal Drive To New One?

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.

Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

The HDD is arriving Tuesday, once I have installed what will I have to do to it to make it a part of my current HDD. I assume Im looking at a RAID 0 using disk utility?

Before I do that will I have to install 10.5 on the HDD or just use disk utility to format it?

Mac Pro :: Internal Hard Drive Locked?

Jun 25, 2009

So I had some issues with my system and finally decided it was best to get a new hard drive and reinstall osx. When I did this though, my second internal hard drive became locked. I have gone into the Get Info for the drive and it has the Privilege set to Custom. I unlock the lock in the lower right corner and try to change custom to Read & Write, but it does not make the change. I am at a loss on where to go from here.

I am on a MacPro running 10.5.7

Also, which I havent noticed before, the icon of the drive has a small silver lock in the lower left corner. This is the icon on the desktop itself.

2. Will my iTunes account remain the exact same? I don't lose all of my music, do I?

3. About how long will it take to reinstall everything?

As the title has already stated, I'm looking for a new internal hard drive for my iMac. However I don't know anything about them! I just know that I'm looking for something running 15000 rpm if possible, but I've heard that they don't make those for Macs and 7200 rpm is the fastest available. Is this correct?

Anyway, I suppose all I'm really asking is what is the best/most reliable internal hard drive for my iMac?

My only problem is that when i start up the computer, it loads for a few minutes, but 100% of the time after about 3-4 minutes i get a notice saying I did not eject the drive safely and all that. After that the internal hard drive is no longer there. I cant see it in my finder, or disk utility. BTW I am booting from my old hard drive externally. What would cause the new internal hard drive to eject itself?
