Hardware :: Looking For A New Internal Hard Drive?
Apr 7, 2009
As the title has already stated, I'm looking for a new internal hard drive for my iMac. However I don't know anything about them! I just know that I'm looking for something running 15000 rpm if possible, but I've heard that they don't make those for Macs and 7200 rpm is the fastest available. Is this correct?
Anyway, I suppose all I'm really asking is what is the best/most reliable internal hard drive for my iMac?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.
Info:
iPod shuffle, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.
Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

Hey guys, sorry this may seem like a basic question but here goes. There are many, many pages, websites and videos on how to install a hard drive into the MP, no problems there what my question is, is what's next?
The HDD is arriving Tuesday, once I have installed what will I have to do to it to make it a part of my current HDD. I assume Im looking at a RAID 0 using disk utility?
Before I do that will I have to install 10.5 on the HDD or just use disk utility to format it?

So I had some issues with my system and finally decided it was best to get a new hard drive and reinstall osx. When I did this though, my second internal hard drive became locked. I have gone into the Get Info for the drive and it has the Privilege set to Custom. I unlock the lock in the lower right corner and try to change custom to Read & Write, but it does not make the change. I am at a loss on where to go from here.
I am on a MacPro running 10.5.7
Also, which I havent noticed before, the icon of the drive has a small silver lock in the lower left corner. This is the icon on the desktop itself.

I have MBP 17", 2,53GHz, hdd is 250GB. I have a lot of music and pictures and quite lot movies. On the other side I have a lot mails. Is it better to make two partitions and keep them separate? What is your suggestion? If I decide to do that, do I need to remove everything from hard drive to make another partition? I never did it before on mac, but I remember that is necessary on windows.

I have a 13" Macbook Pro with only 160GB of internal hard-drive space. I have an external hard-drive that backs everything up, but before I work on getting a better hard-drive for inside my MacBook Pro, I want to make sure of a couple things:
1. When I start up my MacBook Pro after the "procedure" it will put everything back to exactly how it is, right? Like, to the point where it doesn't seem like there is a new hard-drive in it?
2. Will my iTunes account remain the exact same? I don't lose all of my music, do I?
3. About how long will it take to reinstall everything?

I got a new 1tb WD internal hard drive and I took it out of the box and popped it right into my macbook pro 15". It fits and i am able to easily close the back on the computer. My only problem is that when i start up the computer, it loads for a few minutes, but 100% of the time after about 3-4 minutes i get a notice saying I did not eject the drive safely and all that. After that the internal hard drive is no longer there. I cant see it in my finder, or disk utility. BTW I am booting from my old hard drive externally. What would cause the new internal hard drive to eject itself?

I replaced the 250G drive in my imac with a 1T (SATA) drive 2 years ago, but now the 1T drive is close to capacity. I was wondering if anyone had any internal hard drive recommendations for a 2T drive. I have been having some strange problems lately with my imac locking up with only the mouse responding that may or may not be hard drive related. I was using a Seagate drive but I would like to go with someone else.

A few days ago I replaced my internal hard drive because after 2 months from purchase it crashed. The service people replaced it with a ST3500630AS Q Media and all I can say is that it's noisy. It's really irritating because I used my mac to be completely quiet. Should I be worried and call the service to tell them what's going on or should I let it be?

I have a 64gb ssd drive that I use to boot up my macbook pro 15(classic) and a 320 gb on my optibay. I would like to know if there is such a program like smc fan control but for internal hard drives in order to turn off or "PARK" the 320gb hd, This would help increase my battery live as well as making it more quiet.

I have just got a new 17" i7 2.66 UMBP. It comes with a 500GB Hard Drive but I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer 1TB ones.
My reasoning is to have not only more space but create a partition so I can run both OSX & Windows.
I am not sure which brands are more reliable than others & who offers the best warranty or back up service. I would want the fastest & quietest one available as long as it will definitely fit inside the notebook. Reliability & good customer service from the brand is also important as I gather my Applecare will only cover factory installed parts?
Which brand & models should I be looking at and which do you all recommend? I am not sure but I think I need to ensure that any replacement drive does not conflict with the notebooks built in sudden motion sensor?

I recently put a new internal hard drive in my macbook, but i need the bolts that help stable it. do you know what these screws/bolts are called and where i can purchase them? also, i tried using a t6 screwdriver to remove the same things off the hard drive that was originally in my computer, but they wouldn't budge. it was as if they were already stripped before i tried taking them off. is there a "safe" way to remove these with something else, because it doesn't fit in the enclosure i bought with those dumb bolts on it.

I have an older Mac G4 running OS X (10.4.11) and I have three internal hard drives, one of which will not mount. I can hear it spinning up and trying to mount, but it won't.Is it trashed? I've tried everything I know to get it to mount. Is there a way that I can at least recover some files that are on it?

I want to change the internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro 15, for a bigger and faster one but i am concerned because i have many softwares licenses (like Logic studio, Pro Tools, Kontakt, few sample libraries like EWSOgold or Motu products) and i wonder if changing the hard drive is going to create trouble with them.
I intend to create an image of my drive in my external hard drive and then exchange it for the new one and copy everything back in. I have tried unsuccessfully to do the image but i'll keep on trying.

I need to replace the hard drive to my iMac 1.8 GHz, PPC G5. Would an external drive be too slow to run the OS? If I do replace the internal drive with another internal model, proper dimensions/specs for this model iMac? I've been given various, conflicting information. Do I need to use a 1.5 GB/S drive or can I get a faster drive? It is hard to find a 1.5 GB/S drive.

My internal hard drive is running out of space, and I want to buy a new one. But to do that, I'll have to buy a external hard drive to back up everything and then copy it back onto the new internal hard drive , right? I don't have that much budget. So can I use the old internal hard drive that I took out of my Macbook and copy everthing back into the new internal hard drive after the repalecment? so I don't need to buy a external hard drive to back up everythingÂ
