IMac :: Screen Backlight Bleed On New 27 I7

Dec 2, 2009

Just received my new imac today and everything is perfect, quiet drive, no stuck pixels excellent apart from some bad backlight bleeding which can be seen on black screens. It's particularly bad at the top and the sides.... Does anybody else have this and should I risk sending it back??? I have a 52 inch lcd sony and that doesn't suffer at all from back light bleeding...

IMac :: LCD Backlight Bleed / Reset The PRAM Which Figured Wouldn't Work?

Sep 13, 2009

So I contacted Apple this morning regarding the LCD Backlight Bleed on my iMac (24", early 2008, 2.8 ghz) They made me reset the PRAM, which I figured wouldn't work, and the issue is still there.

They say it'll have to go in for servicing, and I live nowhere near an Apple Store, so they gave me the location of the nearest London Drugs. Am I going to get the same quality of service as I would from an Apple Store? And what is the exact process that they use, do they just replace it with a new LCD?Also, he said that it will be covered under Applecare unless it is ruled as accidental damage, he said that much of the time, the issue is caused by pressure on the back of the case, and that if that was the case, it wouldn't be covered.I can't really see how this would cause it, and I haven't ever put any pressure or anything on the back, but i did buy the iMac used, what are the chances of this being ruled accidental damage?I have the bleed in all four corners of the screen, if that makes any difference.

IMac :: 27" Backlight Bleeding Along With Yellow Screen

Jan 1, 2010

I have not seen any posts comparing these two symptoms together, but I am wonding if both exist on the same screens, or if they are infact seperate issues. I returned a 27" iMac i7 because it had both slight yellowing and terrible backlight bleeding. I have seen multiple machines first hand (3 Core 2 Duos week 41s) at different stores (Apple and Best Buy) that had no yellowing and no backlight bleeding. I won't get into how to check for yellowing, you can read about that issue here: [URL]

But to check for backlight bleeding is both easy and impossible not to see if you have it. To check for backlight bleeding, a quick way is to bring up a site like http://www.blackle.com/ or any other black background, and check for an inconsistent white glow on the edges of your screen. I had serious backlight bleeding in the lower corners of my screen, which happens to be where the yellowing was happening. I don't know if they are related, but hopefully we can determine if there is any correlation here.

I did order a second machine, because I know Apple knows how to make a 27" iMac with a perfect screen (as advertised), since I have seen 3 of them in the wild. Hopefully they will be back to the quality that they had is their early production units very soon.

IMac :: Screen / Display Repair Work For Dead Pixels - Yellowing - Grey Bar - Backlight?

Jun 17, 2010

I've got two iMacs in my posession currently from getting replacement machines. Both have screen issues as follows: iMac A - dead & stuck pixels, feint grey horizontal bar running along bottom portion of screen, bottom left corner has noticeable backlight bleed. iMac B - dead & stuck pixels, yellow tinge in bottom portion of screen. So here are my questions. Which iMac should I keep and submit for repair? (does it matter and why or why not?) How does the actual repair get done? For example, if I submit iMac B for repair, could I end up with a grey bar or backlight prob like in iMac A?

Are there multiple layers to the display when they fix specific issues? For example, let's say the dead pixels are on one layer while the yellow tinge is on a different layer, or are both issues on the same layer? I ask because if there are two or more separate layers, there is more of a chance to mess up so I may want to submit the iMac that has the least amount of issues.

Lastly and most importantly, has anyone submitted their iMac for screen repair for these issues and got it back 100% repaired? (no dead/stuck pixels, yellowing, grey bar, backlght bleed) These are #4 and #5 in terms of the number of replacements I've gotten now and I'm sick of it so I may opt to go for repair on either of these existing machines instead of going for replacement #6. But do you think a 6th replacement would be better than going for repair on either of these? Or not?

MacBook Air :: Uneven Screen Backlight - Screen Darker At The Bottom

Jan 12, 2011

My Air's screen is slightly darker at the bottom (only on a few millimeters, but still). It only happens on a white/light background though (I don't have my dock at the bottom). In comparison, the screen of my MacBook has a very uniform backlight. Does anybody else have this issue?

MacBook :: Can't Keep Screen Backlight On

Dec 15, 2010

I kept my macbook (late 2008) turned on overnight on lowest brightness and when I tried turning the brightness back on this morning, the backlight flashed on for less than a second and then turned off again. Somehow I managed to get it to work, but whenever I move my macbook even slightly the problem reoccurs. I've done some research on my problem and I suspect that it's hardware related (maybe the inverter or the inverter cable?), but maybe the LCD itself is broken? Does anyone else have any experience with this?

OS X :: Screen Went Black - Backlight Still On

May 13, 2010

I was using firefox today (all I had open was facebook and gmail) and iCal was open in another space. All of the sudden my macbook screen went black, but the backlight was still on and the music was playing. I hit the space bar a few times and moved around the mouse and the screen came on for a second or 2, but then went black again. It wouldn't come back, so I had to hold down the power button. When it restarted, everything was normal, except that now the fan is going fast and loud, and my computer is getting hot with only firefox open to macrumors.

MacBook :: Screen Won't Turn On / Backlight

Dec 26, 2010

I have a 2008 White body model Macbook with 2 gigs of ram and 2.1 core duo processor. My problem is that the screen won't turn on...when I start up my computer it lights up for a second, but turns off before the apple sign shows up. If I look really close I can see everything. Oddly enough, if I press the brightness button so to decrease the brightness to the very last bar and then hit the f2 button to turn up the brightness by one, the light will turn on for a few seconds, if i continually go back and forth, I can sort of use it enough to do something with it (thank god because I had all my work for school on it). I have included a link with this thread so you can see what I mean.

MacBook :: Screen Backlight Does Not Work

Jun 7, 2010

I have had my Macbook for almost three years now, and for the last month, the backlight for my screen has gone off. However, when I put the brightness down to 0 when the light is off, and put it up by 1 it sometimes turns on for a couple minutes/seconds/hours. Any help? By the way, I am using Boot Camp, I do not know if this happens on my Mac Side, because it comes up with a "stop" sign when I try to boot it up.

MacBook Pro :: A1286 Screen Backlight Won't Work

Aug 24, 2010

I own a macbook pro unibody A1286. I spilled some soda on it and I followed everything that you would do when a liquid spill happens. After a few days I turned on the macbook pro and I hear the charm and can see the screen with light on it. The back light had gone out on the unit. At first I thought It would be the screen, so I ordered a new screen and tried it out. With the new screen it is the same, the back light for the lcd wont turn on. Everything else on the macbook pro is functional except for the back light.

I even own a mini display port to HDMI adapter and hooked that up to my TV and it worked perfectly. The isight camera works, all the ports work, speakers work, optical drive works. Just the Back light on the LCD does not.

MacBook Pro :: 13" MBP / 2.53 - Backlight Screen Bleeding

Jul 15, 2009

I've had my new 13" MBP for about a month now and I am noticing what looks like backlight bleeding spots at the bottom of my screen. It is most noticeable on the bottom left and appear blue-ish on a black screen at maximum brightness. It is getting irritating when I am watching movies at night. I have the 9CBD screen. Others have said they have no problems with this screen model. So is this normal or is it a defect? If it is a defect, what can I do to fix this? My 14 day grace period is over, so I'm assuming an easy exchange at the Apple Store is out of the question?

MacBook Pro :: Backlight Shuts Off At Login Screen

Feb 19, 2012

I have just replaced the display panel in my MacBook Pro (A1260) and now it is behaving oddly at startup. The backlight lights up normally until the boot process gets to the Login screen, at that point the LEDs shut off. I can see the images on the display, (the LCD seems OK,) the only issue is that the LEDs are turning off.

Here's what I've tried:
1) If I boot in Target mode, the screen stays lit. (As expected.)
2) If I reset PRAM, the lamp behaves normally, staying on through that session. If I restart, the lamp-off- condition returns.
3) I have reset the SMC per instructions here, [URL]. No change, LEDs shut off.

MacBook Air :: Dark Patch On The Bottom Of LCD Screen / Backlight?

Jun 28, 2008

It seems my MBA has developed some issues with the LCD, there is a noticeable dark patch on the bottom of the screen and it is really bugging me, normally little things like these I can get over with but seeing how much I paid for this laptop it is very disconcerting. Oh and also, when the screen is off and viewed under a sun/bright light, you can see waves / "ripples" of the LCD, is that supposed to be normal? Just wondering if Applecare will "care" about this issue.

MacBook :: Brightness On Screen Lowest Setting / Backlight

May 8, 2010

A month or so ago, the backlight randomly went out on our MacBook. If you look very closely you can see the screen, but it's like you've got the brightness on its lowest setting. The backlight comes on as normal when you turn on the computer, or wake it from sleep, but goes out after about 2 minutes. Other than not being able to see what's going on, the computer works fine. I took it to the Apple Store, who said they'd have to replace something at a cost of ?75, which was fine. Just over a week later, they called and said that hadn't worked, and that it was actually the logic board that needed replacing, at a cost of ?385, more than the value of the computer. We decided it wasn't worth it.

Yesterday however, I took it to a friends and connected it to his monitor, and even though the screen was dark on the MacBook, it came up fine on the monitor. To me, it seems strange that it's a logic board issue when it works fine with an external display.

MacBook Pro :: Lower Middle Area Of The Screen Backlight Too Bright

Apr 14, 2010

I just noticed that on a black background, my 17" i7 MacBook Pro has two areas in the lower middle area of the screen, where the backlight is too bright compared to the rest of the screen. It is very noticeable on a black background and grey.. Is anyone else having this problem?

Other things I noticed:
- there was dust on the plastic cover that you take off the case when you use it for the first time
- the aluminium enclosure was slightly dirty, could be rubbed off though..
- there are two minor 'impurities' in the aluminium (?!).. two tiny grey spots/blemishes basically
- there were a few minor scratches on the aluminium casing.
- the apple logo at the back glows in a much warmer (yellow-ish) colour than the previous generation mbp (?!)
- the screen seems not as bright as the previous generation
- the keyboard backlight seems not as bright as the previous generation

MacBook Pro :: Won't Restart/shutdown Black Screen & No Keyboard Backlight

Mar 30, 2012

My 2009 MBP would have problems shutting down or restarting. On a shutdown, it would appear to off, black screen and no lights, but if you tried pressing the power button nothing happened. I had to hold the power button to turn it completely, then press it again to startup.Restarts had the same behaviour, it would get to a black screen and I would have to hold the power button and then press it again to startup.I ended up taking this MBP back for another problem, and they replaced it with a 2011 MBP (since I had recurring logic board that failed a few times).Anyway, I swapped the SSD from my old mac into the new one, and I have the exact same behaviour!!Seems to be some corrupt settings or something. So I booted from a Mac installation disc, wiped my hard drive and reinstalled the OS, then I restored from Time Machine, and unticked the option to restore settings.I want to also add, that my backlit keyboard isn't working either.I tried resetting the SMC, but the power light on my charger didn't cycle orange/green, so I'm not sure if it worked. I tried multiple time, following Apple instructions.I also reset the PRAM, which did work.

IMac (Intel) :: Change Display Settings Such As Color Temperature And Backlight Brightness On Monitor?

Nov 30, 2014

My wife has an iMac (I don't know any other way to identify it e.g. model number), and she has this 3rd party calibration software that I'm trying to use. I am not used to a Mac, and I cannot find the display settings for the monitor. There are no buttons on the monitor, and when I go to preferences, I can only find the brightness control. I've googled this and cannot find a clear, simple answer. I have used every version of Windows (currently on 8.1 on my PC) and it's easy for me on that platform. I suppose it's just that I don't really know how to navigate Mac OS.

IMac :: 24" Screen Weird Hatched Lines On Screen?

May 24, 2009

First of all I'm new here so just wanted to say 'Hi', its been great to see all the discussions on these forums and they help a lot with buying tips and troubleshooting so thanks.

Problem #1 I purchased a refurb 24" 2.8GHz imac early May and have been using it since then and so far other than the "normal" gradient issue and a brownish tinge around the edges of the screen it has been good.

Lately I've been using Aperture a lot and first started to notice that in some pictures especially ones with quite a bit of highlights like clouds that there are small hatch like patches in all the pics. I know it isn't the pictures but the imac screen itself as you can see it on the desktop as well. It only seems to be centralized in the upper left hand section of the screen and they seem to be lite purple/blue in color. And like I said its only in patches in certain spots on the screen. Don't know if I'm being over anal about this or is this a problem?

Problem #2 I switched to a solid blue background to check the above problem and notice that there is screen burn in of the top and bottom header in the outline of my firefox window on the blue screen. Between switching windows often and applications very frequently and not leaving the computer at all... what the heck? Not normal for imac screens is it? Heat issue causing burn in? Hasn't been an issue with any other LCD I've ever used.

By the way the imac came in a new white box and was wrapped like new in perfect condition but I popped it open without ever starting it once to make a hard drive swap and the thing was definitely a bit dusty inside so in now way was it just used for a couple weeks before being given back to apple.

My iBook G4 is out of warranty and the backlight goes out. Sometimes its seconds, sometimes minutes, sometimes days. Its really annoying because besides that, the computer works perfectly. I want to take it apart and see if theres anything I can do to it (is there?) I know its risky, but I am willing to do it, so don't tell me anything about the risk involved. I would just like to know if its possible (thinking it might be a loose wire or something?) and if it is possible, does anyone have any tips or point me to a good tutorial on how to do this? I just really want to get this fixed, especially with Leopard 6 days and 6 hours away (and 45 minutes and 30 seconds).

MacBook Pro :: LED Backlight On But No Picture?

Jan 22, 2009

I have a 2.2 Santa Rosa 15" MBP, and an odd thing happened last night. I wasn't running any unusual applications, and had a few things open and was browsing in Firefox. All of a sudden my screen went black, and wouldn't come back up.

The computer is still running just fine, and it didn't go to sleep. The LED backlight is fine, as the Apple logo is lit up and if I change the brightness I can see the backlight changing (the "black" screen gets less "black", if that makes sense), however the actual display panel isn't projecting any picture at all.

I've restarted a dozen times, reset PRAM, and did the unplug battery and hold power button trick, all to no avail. There's no flicker of a picture or anything... it's as if the monitor is completely dead (aside from the backlight being fine).

If I plug in an external monitor, I can use the computer just fine. So it's not like the video card is dead all the way.
