I have a number of thumb drives that are formatted for windows (dos I suppose), is it possible to reformat them to work with my intel imac?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAll other articles I've seen online and on this site have been utterly useless for information on how to reformat this drive to a standard format. It has to be possible because all it is is a standard usb thumb drive.
I don't care if it gets rewritten as I've made a copy of it, and besides, if I really need the os to be installed again I'll just take it to the Genius Bar to have it done.
I'm looking for someone who really knows there stuff with terminal and permissions and all of that stuff to shed a little light on this subject.

I'm looking to format my external, which i did but one question under Info it says
Format : Mac OS Extended
Capacity : 999.86 GB
Available : 999.28 GB
Used : 579.4 MB on disk (579,424,256 bytes)
What is the used space about? When it should be 100% empty?
I just bought a new 160GB hard drive for my imac G3. I know that you have to format it to get the computer to recognize it but i don't know how you do this and when I try to insert my Mac OS X install disk it just comes up with installer and when I try to quit installer it only lets you restart. So my question is, how do you format a new hard drive (160GB) on an iMac g3 to get it to recognize it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a Transcend 8GB usb drive and i want to erase everything on it but i can't. I know that the best way to do this is the Disk Utility (Because Finder can't erase them too. When I drag and drop to the bin, it says "43 files cannot be deleted")Â
When i attempt to format, this message appears from disk utility:Â and also, another message appears at the same time.I just wanted to format my disk. But i can still see the content in the disk. But can't copy them to desktop.Â

I bought a WD My Book Essential to do Time Machine backups. It is formatted for a PC but I was told I need to format for my IMac before I can use it. How do I do that? Is it a complicated process? I have only been using a Mac for about a year now and am still learning about them.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
I'm trying to install ubuntu from a thumb drive. Basically, I'm converting the .iso to an .img, and restore the thumb drive from the .img, trying to make it bootable. I'm following the procedure form the ubuntu website. Drag and Drop a file from Finder to Terminal to 'paste' the full path without typing and risking type errors.
Download the desired file
Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight)
Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil (e.g., hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso)
Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically.
Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
Insert your flash media
Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg).
Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster.
If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M.
If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive.
Run diskutil eject/dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
Restart your Mac and press alt while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB-Stick
Everything goes through fine, except, when I restart my mac to see the boot options. All I see is Macintosh HD

View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to put something on thumb drive to transfer over to my other mac but it was too big for it so I made space by transferring some of the files on to my mac. I ended up emptying out my thumb drive to make room. So I had to delete the files on my thumb drive once I moved the files to my mac since moving them basically just makes copies. However, my empty thumb drive still reads as if nothing was ever removed. I have a empty 4GB thumb drive that says I only have 1 plus GB left?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIf I'm trying to import pictures from a cd rom or thumb drive, can I not import them directly into iPhoto? Is this correct? I have to import them into finder somewhere and then into iPhoto?I swear if i'm importing them from my iPhone I can put them directly into iphoto.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 thumb drives. I believe one if formatted Fat32 and the other specifically for the mac. When I delete files from them the available space does not increase, the only way to get the memory back is to format them. If I check the info it still shows space used after I delete every file, and not a little used space it shows the amount of space before I delete anything. How to fix this without reformatting whenever I need more space?

I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5 (using Leopard). I had no problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, but when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port. I figured the problem was a bad card reader.
I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos. Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed. I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera. Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?

I have a PNY 8gb Attache thumb drive that is not recognized by my 2010 27" I7 iMac. It does not show on the desktop, disk utility, finder or system profile. However, this thumb drive works on my MacBook, 2006 24" iMac and a Dell laptop running XP.  I have 4 other drives (1-4gb) that work on all of our computers. Currently running Lion @ 10.7.3 but this problem existed on SL @ 10.6.8 also.  I have tried this drive as a FAT-32 and Mac OS journaled and the 27" still will not recognize the drive.Â
