OS X V10.7 Lion :: Making Backup Of It On Thumb Drive?
Jun 6, 2012
Downloaded Lion install on my iMac. Tried to make copy on thumb drive, but each time I get message "Restore Failure" Could not restore-cannot allocate memory. Using 8GB thumb drive. I have tried 2 times to move the file from my desktop to the thumb-drive and have gotten the same message both times.
Are there any apps out there that will automatically update the contents of my flash drive when I plug it in? I use my thumb drive to keep documents for my classes, like java files for my programming class or papers etc. It would be fantastic to be able to just plug my flash drive in and if I have added a document into certain folders it will copy those files onto my flash drive.
i have a 2011 macbook pro (md313) and i want to reinstall lion and due to low speed internet connection i cant use recovery partition can i use lion tumb drive wich is available on apple store?

I'd like to protect my thumb (flash) drives and want to know the easiest effective way to do so. All the freeware and shareware programs out there only add to my confusion.Â
Since OS X 10.7 comes as a download from the app store, does anyone know if it is possible to install the OS on a thumb drive, in my case so that I could run diagnostic software on the system drive by booting from the thumb drive?

I am trying to restore my Macbook Air using the Apple Lion Thumb Drive. I inserted the thumb drive, restarted, and held down Command-R. I got the recovery mode, and it is asking me to choose a Wi-Fi Network to continue... I don't have wi-fi here. Is there a way to do this using the thumb drive and no internet?
It seems that the Lion build from the Mac App Store is not compatible with my Macbook Pro Retina 15''. It's seems I would need the the build 11E2068 for my USB thumb drive to work properly. I don't want to go through the internet recovery and loose 8 hours.
Is there anyway for my to get that build(11E2068) on my USB thumb drive?

Is it possible to have Time Machine overwrite an existing backup instead of making excessive new backups? If not, is there a way to control when Time Machine preforms its backup task so as to not make excessive backups?
Info: iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
Is there a way to make a backup of your Time Machine backup on a 2nd hard drive? I want to be doubly sure that my data is backed up!Right now I get an error saying that the second hard drive isn't authorized to copy my Time Machine data from the original hard drive I have set up as my Time Machine.
I'm trying to install ubuntu from a thumb drive. Basically, I'm converting the .iso to an .img, and restore the thumb drive from the .img, trying to make it bootable. I'm following the procedure form the ubuntu website. Drag and Drop a file from Finder to Terminal to 'paste' the full path without typing and risking type errors.
Download the desired file Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight) Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil (e.g., hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso) Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically. Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices Insert your flash media Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2) Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2) Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg). Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster. If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M. If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive. Run diskutil eject/dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes Restart your Mac and press alt while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB-Stick
Everything goes through fine, except, when I restart my mac to see the boot options. All I see is Macintosh HD
I would like to use FileVault to encrypt both my hard drive and time machine back up external drive. Does encryption noticeable slow down the computer.

I wanted to put something on thumb drive to transfer over to my other mac but it was too big for it so I made space by transferring some of the files on to my mac. I ended up emptying out my thumb drive to make room. So I had to delete the files on my thumb drive once I moved the files to my mac since moving them basically just makes copies. However, my empty thumb drive still reads as if nothing was ever removed. I have a empty 4GB thumb drive that says I only have 1 plus GB left?
If I'm trying to import pictures from a cd rom or thumb drive, can I not import them directly into iPhoto? Is this correct? I have to import them into finder somewhere and then into iPhoto?I swear if i'm importing them from my iPhone I can put them directly into iphoto.
I have 2 thumb drives. I believe one if formatted Fat32 and the other specifically for the mac. When I delete files from them the available space does not increase, the only way to get the memory back is to format them. If I check the info it still shows space used after I delete every file, and not a little used space it shows the amount of space before I delete anything. How to fix this without reformatting whenever I need more space?
I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5 (using Leopard). I had no problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, but when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port. I figured the problem was a bad card reader.
I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos. Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed. I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera. Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?

I have a PNY 8gb Attache thumb drive that is not recognized by my 2010 27" I7 iMac. It does not show on the desktop, disk utility, finder or system profile. However, this thumb drive works on my MacBook, 2006 24" iMac and a Dell laptop running XP.  I have 4 other drives (1-4gb) that work on all of our computers. Currently running Lion @ 10.7.3 but this problem existed on SL @ 10.6.8 also.  I have tried this drive as a FAT-32 and Mac OS journaled and the 27" still will not recognize the drive.Â
