IMac :: Option Bypassed To Transfer Operational Data?
Nov 4, 2010
I bypassed the option to transfer operational data (Libraries, Fonts, etc) when starting up my new iMac and would like to do so now. Drag and drop doesn't give permission to do this post-startup. How can I transfer this nitty-gritty stuff now?
The Mini Has Some Great Software On it, Could i Use Migration Assistant To Transfer The Programs To My iMac Without Losing My Data On My iMac? Or is There Any Other Way?
When I restart the g4/800mhz quicksilver while holding "t" it issues the sound of happiness and hums for a bit then clicks off. There is no regular error message on the imac but I did get "there is no osx disc on your old computer, etc". Is there any way to do this without having to be smart enough to put every file in the right place on the imac? These machines are supposed to be smarter than I am right? BTW every drive on the g4 has os 10.4 installed on it. I'm looking for that clean transition from one computer to the next. Also, is there some reason I wouldn't be able to install os 10.5 that came with the imac on a macbook/2.0?
I am a MS Windows (MCP) consultant based in California and unfortunately dont know much about Apple, Have worked with Linux and red hat to some stage and need some friendly expert advice as i have a customer who recently bought an Apple Mac notebook and asked me to transfer data ( e-mails , pics letters )from her (imac os10.4) to the new Apple Mac notebook.
typically, i am thinking transferring data via a wired network(Hub) would be the best way, based on the total data size , or alternatively an external HDD , Could someone provide me with some facts, tips, or perhaps a good guide line or a URL so I can achieve this with no embarrassment and a happy ending result for my client.
I'm about to order the 2.93ghz 24" imac with radeon 4850 and I was just wondering what the fastest/easiest way to transfer all the data i have from my current pc would be.

I need to buy a firewire cable so I can transfer photos and my itunes library from my older macbook to my new imac. I want to buy the cable from monoprice but I am confused by the number of options I have when searching.
I get results that have 4, 6, and 9 pin options. Do I need the 9 to 9 pin cable? 6 to 6 pin? Some other combination? My macbook is around 4 years old, pre-leopard, osx 10.4.x. The iMac is brand new.
I have an old Summer 2000 iMac DV SE running Tiger. Recently when I powered up the machine I saw the display flicker a bit then went dead. I also began to smell something burning from the rear ventilation ports. Now when I press the power button, it lights up for a brief moment then the burning smell returns.
I just purchased a new iMac 21.5 inch desktop and I'd like to take the hard drive out of my old macbook pro and transfer my iPhoto and iTunes library to this new desktop. How would I do that and what would I need? The macbook pro model is a 2010 13.3 2.4 2x2gb 250gb part number MC374LL/A.

Please help me out with this i have no idea how to do this and the Apple Store said they will do it for $100 and i just poured every penny i own into this computer and cannot sell me old computer to pay bills until i transfer this data.
I have a mid 2007 20" iMac that I just rebuilt with a new 1 TB hard drive and 4GB of ram. Afterwards I upgraded to Yosemity 10.10.1. Today (3 days latter) it froze up, tried everything but had to hold power button in to shutdown. After restarting I tried doing the hardware test thats in my operator's manual holding the "D" key during power up. It was bypassed and opened straight to my desktop. Can I perform a hardware test with the new operating system?
Info: iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), Mid 2007 Intel 20"
I just connected my 15" MacBook Pro to an external monitor and purchased a keyboard for my MacBook. I also attach a mouse to my MacBook. When I close the lid completely the MacBook stops displaying on my external monitor. Is there a system preference or something else that I can change to prevent this from happening? I'm hoping to use my MacBook as my desktop too.
I never thought I'd say it, but after decades of PC use I am finally seriously considering switching to the world of Mac, which would entail a pretty massive data migration. Anyone know if there's a way to just link up my ATA hard drive from my PC to a Mac via USB or firewire or something, and just transfer the data (word docs, photos, music - obviously not apps) to the hypothetical new Mac? That would be a heck of a lot easier than burning a jillion CDs in order to transfer the data, which is my current best option.
Also, and this is more obscure, and might not even be possible, but I figure I'd ask - I've been using Eudora as a mail client for years (really old version, 3.0, still works under XP believe it or not). I would love to be able to migrate my mail. Eudora 3.0 stores the mail as text in these files marked ".mbx", but of course, it's not that simple, because to actually index them, the app has to refer to corresponding "table of contents" files with a ".toc" extension. I could transfer the .mbx files to a new mac easily enough - I mean, they're just text - but it would be lovely, so lovely, to keep the indexing. Anyone know of a converter out there that could carry that all over into a mail client, any mail client, for Mac OS?
DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE - OR - DATA RECOVERY COMPANIES?
I shot a film this summer on RED ONE digital camera, and now BOTH of my Lacie 2TB drives in which we deposited the footage aren't working. I NEED to recover data.
In researching here and online, I've looked into software options such as Data Rescue 3 and Disk Warrior.
I've also investigated companies in which you mail the drive into them. Lacie themselves recommended a CA outfit called Drive Savers Data Recovery; I've also investigated On Track Data Recovery (the world's largest), and ESS Data Recovery. There's also Tekserve here in Manhattan.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these options/companies specifically? Huge differences in price; everyone seems confident, ESS the most realistic.
What is the best route to recover my film?
The drives have about 800 GB of film footage - in the form of RED's proprietary software - R3D file extensions, plus Quicktime proxies.
Here are the drive issues:
DRIVE #1 - My Master copy of film: my iMac had OS 10.4.11; the drive mounted no problem; I upgraded a few days ago to Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Now it doesn't mount. It's in Disk Utility but the volume line is greyed out. The Apple Store folks tested my iMac and my drive and said it's the drive. They said it was just a coincidence that the drive developed an issue at the same time I upgraded my OS.
DRIVE #2 - was initialized in a Dell laptop, but NOT formatted.
Is there a way to have a complete, duplicate, operational OS-X system on another Apple machine (as a backup)? A few weeks ago our Mac Pro was suddenly down. Almost everything was backed up, and it was covered by Apple Care but the machine was not available again for about three weeks. We used a much older MacBook to stumble thru in the meantime, but it was difficult and business suffered.Would it be possible to purchase a new MacMini, and duplicate the systems somehow? Would this need to be via Snow Leopard Server? I understand that some third party apps may have license issues, and some setup parameters may have to be changed, but how well would everything else function?Presumably, this is a very common business issue, with existing solutions. Even for a one or two person business.
I just bought a new macbook, but have a ton of photos stored on my old mac. What would be the best option for transferring only the photos (no other data) to the new macbook? Migration assistant or just manually with an external hard drive?
Info: MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
I have a powermac g5, and I use time machine with it. If I sell the G5 and keep the external time machine drive, can I just connect the time machine drive to my new mini and get everything back? I want to get everything back, including apps, files etc. Can I just drag everything off the external drive and copy it all to my mini?
I just started to use about mba 2 months ago I purchased an imac today and i wanna transfer my data on mba to my new imac. how can i do that? I got time capsule.
He needs to transfer the data from the old desktop to the new laptop. Does Windows have something like the beloved Migration Assistant of Leopard? What is the easiest way to transfer between the two?
This Friday I am going to treat myself to a new MBP with the arrival of Snow Leopard. Are there any tips or pitfalls to be aware of when transferring data from old MB to new MBP? I plan on using Migration Assistant with firewire. SEEMS pretty straight forward. Need to transfer all applications and data. I still haven't entirely shaken my Windows past, so I am a bit nervous. Also, after the transfer is complete, what is the best/most secure way to wipe out the MB HD, reinstall OSX 10.5, and prepare for an ebay sale?
Like many, very recently I took the plunge: 27" iMac / Quad Core / i7 / 1TB HDD / 8GB RAM and I couldn't be happier! What is the best solution for transferring data from an old hard drive (formally inside a PowerMac G5) to the brand new iMac? My first attempt was with the 'Akasa Integral HDD External Enclosure' however this doesn't appear compatible with the file structure of Tiger, let alone Snow Leopard. The PowerMac G5 tower itself has a failed power supply, so connecting from Mac to Mac isn't an option either.
I have a unibody macbook model 5,1. I currently have it dual booted with windows-xp so I can play games(upgrading to 7 soon), and I want more harddrive space. I am debating between buying a new internal and simply upgrading or just getting external. Does anyone know if running games off of an external decreases performance? I was also wondering how hard it is to install a new harddrive and transfer all the data from the old one, also how do you transfer the data between harddrives?
