IMac (Intel) :: How To Transfer Over Contacts / Mail Folders And Safari Bookmarks
Dec 3, 2014
I just bought a new iMac to replace my 8 year old MacPro and was advised here to install all apps with a clean install rather than migrate 8 years of content over to the new machine. How do I transfer over my Contacts, Mail folders and Safari bookmarks?
I have a question for the the Safari geeks out here (1.1.1 version 100.1, running on MacOSX 10.3.2): I have imported my bookmarks from a Mozilla install on a Linux box, based on a hint I found here with the debug options (worked great!!!), and I have the following questions related to adding a new bookmark (based on the fact that my bookmarks are organized in multi-level folders, e.g. OperatingSystems->Linux->Security->Firewall, etc.):
- when opening Bookmarks->Add bookmark ..., how could I possibly collapse all the levels, so that I can easily scroll, and open/drill down into the appropriate level of bookmarks, without having to scroll thrrough all (by default) expanded levels? ... especially critical as some sub-categories may match names, with different higher level bookmarks, thus having to make sure I am where I want to be (e.g. I have a Security folder under OS->Mac, as I have one under OS->Linux, and I have to remember which one I am under, if the "parent" is out of the scrolling window);
- is there any easy way to add a new "level/folder", through Bookmarks->Add bookmark, at the time of salvaging a new one, vs. having to open the Bookmarks in a new window, adding the folder, then returning to add the new bookmark?
I hope the above makes sense ... I am probably hopeful - also - that people may have already run into this before
How do I add sub folders under Safari bookmarks? For example, Finance is bookmarked. I want to add folders under that heading, e.g. Banks, investments, etc
I have tried everything to get rid of dozens of duplicate Bookmarks Menu and Bookmark Bar folders in Safari's bookmarks. But despite everything as soon as they sync they all appear again. I am trying to syc two MacPros, MacBook Air, iPhone and iPad2. I phoned the helpline which worked at the time, by turning off synching, dumping all the User > Library > Safari folders then putting the same backup file from Time Machine onto all of them. Then turning on iCloud again. Until it all synched again causing the same problem. I have just tried all this again. I now have perhaps a hundred empty folders called Bookmarks Menu and Bookmark Bar. With .Mac and .Me this used to work perfectly. With iCloud it is a MESS.

I have a number of Bookmarks that I am wanting to organise. I have a Folder called Apple that I put all of my Apple related Bookmarks in. I am starting to get too many Bookmarks, and would like to put them in Sub folders INSIDE the Apple Folder. How to create Sub folders inside the Apple folder though. I am running Safari 5.1.4
Could some teach me on how to take a copy of my Bookmarks from Safari, then be able to transfer that on my other Safari app while I'm logged in on my guest log in?
And also on how to take my iTune playlist to my other iTune app on my guest log in please..
Safari 5.1.7 under OS X 10.7.4 simply refuses to let me rearrange folders within the Bookmarks Menu. I use Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks and select Bookmarks Menu in the sidear. If I now drag and drop a folder within that menu, it just pops right back to where it was before. I've tried all the methods I know:Â
(1) Drag com.apple.Safari.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences and restart Safari. Same problem.Â
(2) Use the app SafariSort [URL], which alphabetizes all the folders and their contents. But as soon as I now try to drag-and-drop a folder or a bookmark, the order of everything reverts to the original (unwanted) order. exactly, does Safari store the list of Bookmark Menu folders? I examined com.apple.Safari.plist in both the XCode plist editor and in a plain text editor, but I don't see them there. (And actually it's obvious that the bookmarks cannot be there, since after I remove com.apple.Safari.plist and restart Safari, the bookmarks are back; where were they)

safari has problems with banking sites, IE and Firefox work OK - so if I wish to work in Firefox 1.4 in future how do I transfer my extensive bookmarks from safari please? Working in 10.3.9 now.
I have managed to transfer all of my music video and apps from my external hard drive onto my new macbook (replacement for my ibook). Is there any particular procedure I need to follow so as to ensure I do not lose any data. Obviously my new macbook will be where I am syncing from now on. As an aside will the sync transfer my bookmarks into safari?
I continue to have problems with Safari after the Version 10.2.8 Apple pulled a year or so ago. It Unexpectedly quits everytime I hit any arrow, delete or modifier key. I decided for some reason to once again delete Safari and everyhing I could find. Anyway I want to get all the Safari bookmarks from my powerbook which works fine, and get them over to my iMac. There appears to be no way to save or transfer them! Unless I use .Mac which I can't afford.
I'm a brand new Mac user! How do I import bookmarks from Safari to Opera? I saw one response to access the file bookmarks.plist in Library, but this file is not there;i.e. Library>Safari does not exist. I have been able to retrieve the file bookmarks.html - can I use this?
My husband just ordered a new 13 inch MB for me for Christmas. When it arrives next week I want to get it all set up before he wraps it and "hides" it from me (he said I could so it's ready to go on Christmas morning). So I need to know the easiest and best way to get my files (bookmarks, mail, printer, applications, etc) from the old to the new. I use an external hard drive and super duper to back up. I've never done this before. Would a genius bar do it for me?
im new to Apple products. I bought a macbook pro in dec 2009 and today i decided to buy a imac for many reasons. How do i transfer my music, movies, contacts and other things from my macbook pro to my new imac ? I should have asked in the store but i forgot.
I want to sync the Safari bookmarks from iMac to MacBook Pro. The bookmarks that I have created on my iMac gets automatically synced with my iPad, but somehow it does not happen with Macbook Pro.
When I click on any bookmark or bookmark folder, I first get a black screen with what looks like the Safari symbol. This happened just a couple days ago. When I click on the black screen I get a full page at a time. I used to be able to open up bookmarks & folders directly to Safari. How do I return to the normal, usual way of using bookmarks & bookmark folders?

I have edited renamed moved the bookmarks from bookmarks bar without a problem until I quite safari. Once I reopen safari all changes I made disappear and it reverts back to original with all bookmarks on bookmarks bar. what am I doing wrong that i cannot make permanent changes to my bookmark bar on Safari 5.1.3?
After my recovery drive went missing and trying to reinstall it, had to do a format of my hard drive and reinstall everything once I got OS X reinstalled and up-to-date, I tried to import my bookmarks from a backup bookmarks file, when I quit safari and re-open safari bookmarks were missing and default ones back in place. When searching though the forums for how to fix this problem but too know unluck they did not work.
I use Xmarks to sync my bookmarks from FF to Safari, but on Safari, the bookmark bar shows the number of link inside a Folder/Dropdown, is there a way to hide that ?
I prefer not to change the resolution of my iMac. I find that the bookmarks toolbar is not that easy to read with the default font size. How do I change it and make it permanent?
I have a contact I no longer use and have deleted it from Contacts on my iMac and iPad, but it still keeps appearing in the To: box when I enter a similar contact, boot the iMac and iPad. How do I completely delete it to prevent this from happening?
