View 8 RepliesI'm struggling to find the best approach here. Here's what I got:
1) Mac Mini 2.0Ghz running Snow Leopard
2) Mac Book Pro 2.53Ghz running Leopard
3) Mac Book 2.0Ghz running Leopard
My wife and I each use a laptop as our regular computer. The Mac Mini we just picked up and are looking to use it as a home server (although it doesn't have Snow Leopard Server). We use a program for our business called Daylite that hosts a database that we share between laptops - this is being hosted on the Mac Mini, which will always be powered on so we each can access it. There are also a couple folders that we would like to share on the Mac Mini. This Mac Mini will also sit next to our HDTV to be used for streaming, HULU Netflix, etc. My problem is that I don't know the best way to configure the Mac Mini on the network. I have a Verizon Actiontec Router and Comcast Internet (Dynamic IP, although it has been the same for some time). My questions are:
1) Does it make a difference if I have the Mac Mini directly plugged into the router via ethernet vs wireless? Right now, when we try and File Share between the Mac Mini and laptops, it takes forever to connect, navigate, save files, especially if I am saving to the Mac Mini, from a laptop using Photoshop or even Word.
2) Do I gain anything from running the cable modem directly to the Mac Mini and the enable Internet Sharing from the two laptops, as opposed to using the router?
3) I transferred 1 gig worth of files from a laptop to the Mac Mini and it literally took an hour. I retried it using a direct connection via eithernet between the two computers and it took 10 minutes. I'm hoping that optimizing my setup will speed up my local network transfers. Yes, no?
4) Can I used a Mini DVI to HDMI adapter from my Mac Mini to my tv? If so, does this also send audio signal? It's an Early 2009 Mac Mini.
I have a USB disc drive for my mac book air as well as an external hard drive. I'd like to plug the USB disc drive in, insert the music CD and upload my music to my iTunes folder on the hard drive. Unfortunately, the Disc Drive (the MacBook Air Superdrive) only work when I plug it in direct to the MacBook - not through a USB splitter. As the Air only has one USB port, I can't also plug the external hard drive in. How can I get over this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedDisregarding the internet access/router/gateway part of the Time Capsule for a moment, what is supposed to happen when you plug a time capsule directly into a Mac via ethernet cable?
- Does a dialog box come up?
- Are you supposed to be able to see the disk in the Finder?
- Is Time Machine supposed to see it?
Mine does nothing when I plug it in using a known-good cable. Suspect bad ethernet port on Time Capsule itself (because it also doesn't realize the cable is plugged in to an upstream DSL modem, either) - wondering what the expected behavior of a properly working one is?
Right I have a draytek 2820n wireless router which I will not be replacing. I intend to buy a 1 or 2TB time capsule but was wondering the best way to set it up. Would it be best to plug this directly into the router? Or run it separately as a separate wireless network?

HiI'm gonna purchase the 27" iMac but I'm curious about an aspect of monitors I've never considered. The iMac has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. When I look at ads for TVs, whether it's LCDs or plasmas, the contrast ratios are significantly greater. Can the contrast ratios of TVs be compared directly to computer monitors? Is for example the 1000:1 on the iMac exactly equivalent to a 1000:1 specification on a TV?

This is a brand new intel mac...10.4.4
Yesterday, Safari began crashing every 45 minutes. I get a message that says Safari quit unexpectedly because of a plug-in called .MasterofDefense.tmp. I used finder to search my computer, and I cannot find this file. PlugIn Path: /Users/<myname>/Library/Application Support/.MasterofDefense.tmpPlugIn Identifier: .MasterofDefense.tmpPlugIn Version: ??? (???) The file is NOT in that location mentioned in the crash log. According to web searches, MasterofDefense is some game, but I have never installed any games on my machine.

I was wondering if there was a way to use the iPhone's audio jack as an external jack for the macbook pro via USB or so, as i own the 13 inch model, that only offers one jack.
I want to use garage band just trying out a bit and i'd need an extra jack for the headphones, otherwise the microphone will record what's played over the internal speakers.
EDIT: I forgot to say that I already tried things like AirPhones, meaning wireless stream to iphone. But there's unfortunately few moments of latency, so i hardly can use it for recording.
I wanted to buy a new Mac Pro, but it was pointed out that it was way more than I needed to process digital photos. Also, the price is over the top. I am now considering the IMac; one of the 27" models. My question is: Can I not use the wireless keyboard and mouse? Can I use the same keyboard and mouse from my G5? Can I plug them into one of the USB ports. My external HD is a Firewire 400 connection. Will this work in the one FW 800 port on the IMac? My reason for upgrading from my G5 is that Photoshop Elements 8 will not work on my G5. PE 8 has some features I would like to have.

I currently have a 6 years old Dell XPS PC and want a mac. I've used imacs a lot during college years and now want one for myself, no more PC for me. Now, the question is: what do I need? I would use this mac for pretty much anything, but mostly mostly mostly for music production. I will use it to record songs, I have decided I probably do not need to wait for the refresh, as all I would need is to be able to run plugins and multiple tracks at the same time.. I'm pretty much sold on the imac 27 quad core with 8gb ram right now, but would I be able to make a wiser choice?

I was prompted a couple of weeks ago to update flash player, and having done this I am unable to use it at all. In addition my netflix account prompted me to download silverlight (must have been previously present) and since will not play any netflix films at all. Im running an iMac intel on 10.9.4.

I have quite an old toshiba 32WLT66 hdtv with my mac mini connected to it through HDMI. I did have it connected with vga and a separate audio cable, which worked out, but I wasn't happy with the picture.
The picture is now great with HDMI and as I'm using it mainly for movies through plex I am putting up with the overscan when using it for occasional web browsing.
My question is what is the best solution for getting audio when using hdmi? I have seen some posts where people have suggested looking at the tv settings to force the tv to accept audio through another source when using hdmi. This doesn't seem to work, or it only (might) work on my first hdmi port (when I connect the mac mini to the 1st hdmi port, the picture is very distorted and doesn't appear correctly - so this option is ruled out).
The other solution I'm aware of is connecting to an external amp and speakers - can't so this as I don't have them.
The second option being a set of USB speakers, I believe this might be my only option, but I would rather have the audio coming through the tv as I don't want the clutter of another set of speakers.
I just bought Samsung UN46C7000WFXZA. I want to connect my macbook pro to the TV and i got all the cables that i need.
1- HDMI cable
2- Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Female Adapter.
3- this sit that include Audio Cable
[URL] I did connect everything my macbook pro very well to the TV using HDMI cable from the laptop to HDMI/DVI port in the TV. Also I connected the Audio cable from my Headphone port in my laptop to PC/DVI Audio IN in the TV. Yes I got the pic and everything is good but no sound at all. I tried everything and i searched the net but no luck or answer at all.
if i buy the mini display port to dvi adapter, could i use it with a dvi to hdmi cable for my monitor. This is because the dvi and vga ports are already taken up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running a 21.5" iMac that I picked up in October of '09. I also have a Viewsonic 21" monitor (nx2232w) that I have connected to the iMac at the moment through an HDMI to DVI cable out of the Viewsonic, and into a DVI to mini-DVI for the iMac.The monitor is appearing and functioning in this setup, but I can't get a resolution of any decency. Most everything is out-of-range, or wildly odd, and I know I can do better somehow. I've been searching for Viewsonic drivers, trying out different combinations, and trolling the forums to no avail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI ordered the new 27" i7 and shoulder be here this week. I'm looking to make my samsung SyncMaster T260hd my second monitor, it supports all connections, dvi-d, hdmi, vga.
I'm wondering which "mini display port - to -xxxx" should I get. Does HDMI go higher then 1080p? Is the DVI-D my best option?, I've read that they both have the same "video quality" but was wondering if HDMI offers the same resolutions as DVI, and which will be better for the future as well. I still hope/plan to buy a mac pro in 2-3 years.
I use my computer for light video editing (after effects), lightroom, and photoshop.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried using their mid-2010 imac with hdmi and can confirm if audio (out) works? All the adapters seem to claim audio support with the refresh macbooks but do not mention iMAC. On the Apple store they sell a moshi adapter that lists iMAC support but specifies early-2010 models. Is apple deliberately crippling the new iMACs to *not* allow audio over displayport>HDMI or what is the real story? Some older support threads seem to talk about it working on their 2009 imacs until they upgraded to os 10.6.4. I have tried a few generic cables/adapters but they don't seem to talk audio to my receiver. Anyone had better success?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know that there's already at least two threads on this, but one seems to be geared towards just one specific converter, and the other is almost 1000 posts long, so what I wanted to do here is to make a thread which is a comprehensive comparison between the available adapters.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just replaced my HDTV with a new Sony Bravia 32EX500 (Full HD, 1080p). My previous TV (HD Ready, 720p) was linked to my 2008 iMac with a VGA cable (with a mini-DVI to VGA adapter on the Mac end). It worked perfectly fine, but I can't get it to work with the new TV. Could you please tell me what resolution, frequency, and colours I should use to make it work?
Please not that I do not want a HDMI cable. I know it'd be better and easier, but my computer is quite far away from the TV and an HDMI cable of that length would be way too expensive. I'd rather find a way to make it work with the existing VGA cable. I just need to find the right settings for that VGA input. The TV doesn't recognize the signal right now.
Alright so I go the new 21.5 inch and love it but I was wondering if the Mini-Display Port does audio for the HDMI output. Because if it did, that would be wonderful.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI play PC games and I LOVE mac os.... I have a macbook pro right now which I am selling. The reason I ask about Kanex is because if the new iMacs dont come with a great graphics card, I am thinking of buying the lower end imac and connecting my pc to it for the gaming aspect and using the imac for everything else I do.. "Logic, photoshop bla bla" I just dont want to be stuck at 720p and I cant find any real confirmation if I output my radeon 4870 with HDMI if I can choose a crazy res the imac screen support over the Kanex adapter. I am hoping to god the new iMacs come with a 58XX series card but ya know how that goes.. All I play is Team Fort 2 which should be out for mac soon.
