IMac :: Fan Running At 1500 RPM Randomly
Oct 29, 2009
I recently replaced a failed hdd in my late 2009 aluminum 20 inch. I watched countless teardowns and hdd replacement videos and picture guides before I did this at it was my first mac machine. Not every time, but occasionally when I restart the machine the temp will be some where in between 79- 86 degrees f and the fan will be going at 1500rpm randomly for about 30 seconds and then stops. Other than that everything has been flawless since the replacement.
Did I do something wrong? I put the thermistor correctly on the hdd when I reassembled. What could be causing this as before I replaced the hdd I never heard the fan at all. Mac was bought on august 2, 2009, when hdd died I tried to have apple exchange it, but the wanted to give me a refurbished imac. Since I have had terrible luck with any refurb in the past I just replaced the hdd in it myself.

My 2007 iMac keeps shutting off randomly. I'm running Mountain Lion. I have tried unplugging it from the back waiting and plugging it back in. Sometimes when I have turned it back on, the fan will run loudly.

Well my MacPro 2009 has this weird error where the fans will kick in and a restart wont restore them to normal a sleep cycle will though. It seems to only happen with OpenCL intensive apps but not Cuda intensive apps?? this may be random coincidence.

I have a Macbook running Leopard and an iMac running Tiger. I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard and Tiger to Leopard. If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.

I have an old iMac G3 (400mhz slot loading) that I got second hand for free. When I first got it, it seemed to work perfectly in every way, but the hard disk wasn't very big so I tried to install a new (larger) one. Everything seemed to go fine, but after the upgrade, the computer would only stay powered on for about 10 minutes before shutting itself off. I assumed that it was a problem with the hard disk, so I put the old one back, but the problem persisted. It will only stay powered on for a maximum of about 20 minutes before blinking off and then it has to sit for a while before I can get another 20 miutes out of it

My mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro randomly "loses" its retina display at the top menu (becomes pixel-y), where the battery, sound, and wifi logos are (on the top right side of the screen). A restart fixes the issue, but I want to know if this is an issue that can be fixed?Â

I purchased a 24" iMac in fall of '07 and up until have had no problems at all. Let me describe the problems I'm having now and maybe someone can tell me what to do to remedy them.
A couple weeks ago it started freezing randomly. The mouse will switch to the beach ball and just spins endlessly. I can move it around but can't really do anything other than that. I have to do a hard reset to get it back to normal. Sometimes a couple programs are open, and sometimes none. It seems like it happens often when I quick switch from one user to another. It will switch, work for awhile, then freeze.
Now, no big deal, annoying, but whatever. But, the other day after doing a hard reset it revolted into a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I did some research and found that I needed to repair the startup disc using the snow leopard disc. I did that and it allowed me to boot it back up normaly but didn't really solve the freeze up issue.
So, that just happened again, so I'll have to boot it up with the disc again and repair the startup disc when I get a chance. It's really beyond frustrating now.
I have repaired all permissions, updated all firmware, made sure the drive isn't full, pretty much everything short of backing up and wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS. Is that what I need ro do now? I mean, I know I need to, but is there something I can do to remedy until I can get around to doing that?

A couple of nights ago, my iMac randomly turned on in the middle of the night, so I held the back power button to shut it off. Later that morning, I tried to turn it on and was left with this screen (see attachment). I was very confused. After trying to boot into target mode, safe mode, the assorted...I restored the computer. It seems to work fine now, but I'm still wondering...what the happened?

I got my new 24" iMac ~2 weeks ago, and it's AMAZING compared to my MB... Except the fact that the computer will randomly wake up or start up in the middle of the night. The first night I had it home, it turned on 7 times! The next night, it did it once and I turned it off. It stayed off. The day after that, I turned it off when I went to bed. At 4 AM I hear "DONG!!!!!!!!" Ugh. I get up, and turn it off, only to have it start up at 5 AM. x_x I spent the next day looking for answers, I turned off wake for ethernet network something, and turned off screen sharing, quit all programs, and turned off the Airport card. Still, at 3 AM, it wakes me up. I turn put my jacket over it so I can get some sleep. I've been fighting it every night. I'm tired of it. Yesterday I reset the SMC and PRAM, and it still woke from sleep.

Why my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) has suddenly began randomly freezing up?All working great since I got it but recently I am having a consistent problem with it ceasing up. As a result I took action and restored it to factory defaults over the weekend thinking this would resolve the problem but unforuantely after 2 days without issue the problem has re-surfaced.Â

I do not have AppleCare on this machine. I've got a 27" iMac that will randomly shut down, be it in the middle of playing music on iTunes, while I'm typing a document or while the machine is simply in screensaver mode doing nothing. Usually the machine tries to instantly reboot itself. All too often, it cannot be rebooted and I have to let sit for quite sometime before it will even power back on. Lately the problem has gotten worse, almost never reboots by itself.
Finally, in the last few days, it just won't turn back on. Nothing. My biggest concern is that I have an unreleased music album from an instantly recognizable major client on the iMac's hard drive, not due out for many more months and still unannounced. I can't simply take the computer into an Apple store for troubleshooting as those files are worth and could cost me exponentially more than even a new iMac outright ever would.

I checked [URL] and there seems to be issues with power on some models, but his serial number just misses the infected batch.

I looked into my issue a little but recently my IMac G5 started randomly shutting down when left unused for a bit but that seems to have stopped as far as I have noted. Now occasionally when it goes into sleep mode it will freeze on the black screen and the fan will go crazy. I plan on buying a MBP, if the update ever comes out, and then ill just completely wipe the IMac and give it to my parents, who still use the original I mac, G3 or something. I read a certain series of I Macs were having motherboard problems, W950 or something, but mine wasn't that serial code.

Recently, my iMac 27" i7 has begun hanging in the most bizarre fashion. It usually seems to happen when I wake the computer from sleep or screen saver, but that isn't always the case. What will happen is that when I get to the computer, Mail will show symbology that indicates it is not connected to the Internet or Safari, upon booting, will not open a webpage (it sits on a white screen rather than delivering an error). I'll go to quit one of the offending programs, and it will not quit and beach balls instead. I then right click on the dock to trigger a force quit, and the force quit does nothing and the dock beachballs. I try to restart/shut down, and nothing happens. Thus I am forced to hard restart.
Conversely, I am sometimes able to get an offending program to force quit, but the rest of the computer (anything I click locks up) beachballs leaving me to hard restart. I find when this happens, my first instinct is to click system prefs and go to networking, where when I click networking, it locks up. Then I have to hard restart. Finally, there are times when it does respond to a restart request. It will go through the restart process up to the blue screen at the end, where the little spinning doohickey will appear and stay there indefinitely, forcing me to hard restart. It didn't seem to happen before I got my iPad but happens about every other day now.
At first it seemed to happen after I had my iPad charge from my computer, but now it seems to happen regardless. One time it hung while syncing with my iPhone and required me to restore it since the phone got messed up. I've done everything I can think to do to get to the source of the problem and I can't figure it out. I've looked through logs and didn't see problems (granted, I don't know if I'm looking at correct logs or if I'm looking for the right events). I have repaired permissions, and that seemed to help but not fix the problem. I bridge my iPad to my computer through Internet connection sharing, since I have an Ethernet internet connection. I created Automator work flows to turn it on and off (and AirPort) as I never leave it on when not using it.

Every once in awhile my CPU fan will randomly start speeding up until it gets to about 2000RPM, the optical and hard drive fans will reach about 1250 RPM. After about 10 minutes of annoying fan noise it'll slow down back to around 1000 RPM for all fans. Is this normal? The temperatures all look fine according to iStat, and it's not like I'm doing heavy computing (just running firefox, uTorrent, and iTunes). Is there a way to regulate the fan speed, or do I possibly have a defective computer?

I have had my new iMac 21.5" for about 2 weeks now. Yesterday I picked up a 500 GB LaCie USB Drive to be used for my Time Machine drive. I have the drive connected directly to a usb port on the iMac. Sometimes when the iMac goes to sleep, when I wake up the iMac I get the dreaded "This Drive Has Not Been Disconnected Properly" warning.
I have made sure that the "Put Hard Disk(s) to Sleep Whenever Possible" option is not selected under the Energy Preferences. I have tried multiple usb ports, same issue. This isn't a constant issue, it just happens sometimes. Is there anyway to tell Time Machine to mount and unmount my drive when needed?

I recently bought a 2014 iMac (21.5) inch 16GB machine. I'm going batty with it randomly freezing (beach ball) once every 2-4 days for no apparent reason. I've even looked at console logs and can't figure out. I've resetted SMC/PV(whatever), even reinstalled Mavericks (using a clean bootable drive). We use the iMac for two main purposes: Plex Media streaming (once a day really) and we use Juniper VPN to connect to our corporate network (which explains why you see juniper there)Â

I have a 27" iMac. Just recently, the screen has begun to randomly shut off. I then have to squeeze the power button, followed by a click of the mouse. This will bring me back to my password screen. Sometimes, that would be it, other times, it will do it repeatedly, for no reason, and then settle down.Â
Just for those of you who are bound to ask me about my Energy saving settings: Computer to sleep – Never. Display to sleep – 15 min.Â
It seems to me that this could be a hardware issue, but just incase any of you have had any experience of something similar, I thought I would ask.Â
