Windows On Mac :: Windows 7 Hard Drive From My PC?

Oct 20, 2010

I used the search but didn't find an answer specific to my question, which is:

If I move my Windows 7 hard drive from my PC to my soon to be here MacPro, how do I make it useable in OSX? That is, If I use bootcamp, do I have to completely reformat and install W7? If I don't have to reformat, any tips as to how to most effectively use bootcamp to run W7? Basically, if I have to reformat, I might as well keep it in the PC until my shift to Mac OSX is complete.
I am not talking intensive use, possibly only Quicken for windows until I figure out what program to use on the mac. Other uses might include office if there are problems using my PC files in the new Office for Mac when it comes out next week.

Or should I consider Fusion or parallels?

Windows On Mac :: Changing Permissions On External Hard Drive - Formatted For Windows

Sep 21, 2010

I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. However, it doesn't let me delete anything of the Windows drive since it is set to read only. Is there a way around this? i've tried everything i can think of, but haven't found a soluti

Windows On Mac :: Booting Windows XP From External Hard Drive

Nov 18, 2009

I have an external hard drive which I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 onto. It was a long and painful process but I finally was able to get a modified XP install disc ready and from a Dell PC running Windows was able to install onto the external hard drive and I'm able to boot from it and everything. I did this on a PC because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to boot correctly from an external drive in Mac.

Anyway, the hardest part is in the past and now my only problem is how to boot this external hard drive from my macbook, which is primarily what I want to use it on. I currently have a Macbook with three operating systems on it: Mac OS 10.5.8, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP SP3. I use rEFIt to boot into these operating systems. I tried using rEFIt to boot into XP on the external hard drive but it just gives me the legacy error messages saying that it couldn't load and noting the booting legacy os is not well supported by mac.

Windows On Mac :: Using Windows On External Hard Drive?

Feb 28, 2009

so today I bought a Toshiba external harddrive (black with green stripes?) and it has 160 GB capacity. I run windows on my Black MacBook, and am starting to run out of room on both (its 1/2 and 1/2 partitions of OS X and XP) Is there a way for me to put my windows onto my external harddrive and then restore my internal to ALL osx? then, I could just plug in the external harddrive and hold down something at start, and then it would boot up in windows?

(If this is possible, please just say it's not, but if it is, some detailed instructions

Windows On Mac :: Can An External Hard Drive Be Used On Both Mac & Windows?

Jun 1, 2010

I'm trying to access my WD Passport using firewire 800 on both Windows & Mac.

The current situation is:

I have partitioned the drive through Mac Disc Utility with three partitions.
1. Time Machine
2. Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
3. MS DOS (FAT32)

I can access all partitions when running the MAC OS.
However when using boot camp to lunch Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) I cannot see the drive.

I've tried going into windows disc manager and can see the disc as an unallocated drive with no partitions.

What I want to achieve is to have the one external drive like this;
1: Time Machine (for MAC backups)
2: A partition for storing my MAC files on
3: A partition for storing windows files on (accessed while using bootcamp).

All without losing the existing backups on the drive.

Windows On Mac :: Get Back Lost Data/lost All Hard Drive Partitions After Windows Update?

Jun 26, 2010

I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.

So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).

Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.

A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Makes Crunching Sound / Partitioned Drive To Install Windows?

Aug 28, 2009

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.

I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

Windows On Mac :: How To Partition Hard Drive For XP

Apr 24, 2009

I am installing XP on my mac laptop and am not sure how much space to partition. The laptop's total space is about 235GB with currently 50GB free.

I will only be using Windows for a few specific programs: Autodesk: Toxik, Mudbox, Motionbuilder and Cleaner XL. I probably won't be using the programs too extensively either, I mainly use Maya and I have the OSX version of that.

Based on that info I was hoping to get a rough estimate on how much space I should partition for XP, I don't want to go too low and not be able to install and use everything but at the same time I don't want to put too much space on the XP partition either and end up with wasted space.

Windows On Mac :: Formatting Second Hard Drive For Win7

Sep 14, 2010

I have a new iMac 27, which I'm running primarily as a Windows machine. Using Bootcamp, I sectioned off 150GB of the 256GB SSD for Windows and installed W7 on it (the rest I leave for OS X, in case Windows fails, or upgrades become available). I've installed programs on the Windows drive, transferred my emails, etc. Now I still have to do something with the 1T hard drive, which I've decided not to partition, and to use exclusively in Windows mode. Two questions:

1. Please talk me through the process of formatting the 1T drive, as if I were a child!
2. I will use this drive mostly for large data files, but perhaps also for less important programs. Installations seem to happen more or less automatically when you insert a disc - how would I direct a program in the normal course of an automatic installation towards this second larger hard drive, AND is there any way (simply) to have programs running on the SSD with associated data files sitting on the other drive (e.g. with iTunes)?

Mac Pro :: Migrate To New Hard Drive Without Reinstalling OS X And Windows?

Dec 23, 2008

I've just ordered another drive since the 160gb I allocated to OS X of my primary drive's measly 250gb of space simply isn't enough. I'll likely change my old 750gb data drive into the new primary and use my new drive as a larger data drive. I'm not really fussed about changing the size of my Boot Camp partition - I just really don't want to go through the hasselhof of reinstalling Vista and updating it etc. If it wasn't for the boot camp partition then I'd simply do a direct copy of the stuff on the OS X partition to the new drive. Any suggestions? I'll happily leave it sitting for a while copying stuff over but reinstalling and updating Vista, OS X and all my applications isn't really an option.

OS X :: Partioning External Hard Drive For Mac/Windows?

Mar 13, 2009

I have an Aluratek 60GB external harddrive.

I want to use it as storage for all my iTunes music. However, I would also like to be able to plug the hard drive (usb) into Windows computers to play my music.

I understand that it is possible to do this by formatting the drive as MS-DOS (FAT) using Disk Utility.

Okay, that's great.

Here's the problem:
I seem to somehow have damaged my harddrive (no idea how) so that I can't put more that 116.9mb of info on it before there is an error. However, when I partition off the first 4gb or so as free space, I have found that I can use the rest of the drive just fine.
BUUUT when partitioning the hard drive, the option for MS-DOS (FAT) is unavailable.

Do any of the other available formats work for both mac and pc? (I have Mac OS 10.5.6 and the other available formats appear to be: Mac Os X Extended (Journaled), Mac Os X Extended, Mac Os X Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled), Mac Os X Extended (Case-Sensitive), and, of course, Free Space.)

I went to disk utility and i clicked verify disk (repair disk was not highlighted) and it gave me another error: filesystem verify or repair failed. OS X :: External Hard Drive Initialized By Windows 7?

Sep 16, 2009

I took my external drive round to a friends and plugged it into his windows 7 computer. When plugging it in a menu popped up asking if the disk should be initialized and before I could stop my friend he pressed it! So I have a drive which has basically had its partitions table wiped but is still full of data.

Now, I have used Disk Rescue II which by all accounts seems to have recovered all the data, however I am in the annoying position of having no free space on hard drives to download the recovered data to. Can I therefore use something like diskwarrior to fix the initialized hard drive and re-create the directory structure, preserving all of the data on the drive? If not I guess I will have to locate an extra external drive to download my data to.

Windows On Mac :: Repartitioning Hard Drive Without Reinstalling 7?

Nov 16, 2009

I split my MacBook Pro into 130 GB for OSX and 100 GB for Windows 7. Although I do enjoy and use Windows 7 on my laptop often, I need more space on the OSX side for my media. At first I planned to keep it in an external My Passport drive and just connect it whenever I wanted to use my media, but I came to learn that that idea is a pain in the ass. So I would like to keep all of my media (mostly music) in the OSX partition. The thing is though, I have a Windows 7 desktop at home, and I installed windows 7 on my MacBook Pro only because I found it convenient to be able to work on Windows-only things when I'm not at home. So I really don't need that big of a partition on my MacBook for Windows. I figure, for my purposes about 50 GB is plenty. I already have a copy of all my media hooked up to my PC on an external harddrive at home anyway.

I would like to have all of my media wherever I carry my MacBook as well so I would like to adjust the partition to maybe just 50 GB for Windows and the rest for OSX. Is there any way to do this without having to reinstall Windows 7? I would really like to avoid the process of reinstalling Windows and all the programs I already have in it.
