Windows On Mac :: What Does OEM / System Builder Edition Mean
Feb 16, 2010
I am looking for a copy of either Windows 7 or Windows XP to put on a Mac. I keep seeing the words 'OEM' and 'System Builder's Edition' popping up in my search results. What do these phrases mean? Are these illegal copies of the operating system? Would these work for what I am trying to do?

The installer from this DVD will not launch on my Mac Mini. The store I bought it from won't let me return it so I'm stuck with it. Is there anything I can do to get this damn thing to work? I get a black screen after it huffs and puffs and then dies.

I know that this question was answered for XP but the warning on the System Builders Version of Windows 7 Home 64 bit was scary and I was wondering if anything has changed with the activation on Windows 7. Has anyone used this version successfully on bootcamp 3.1 (iMac 27 inch)?

There is a (custom) version of Windows Xp out there called "Windows XP Gamer Edition" which is basically just a bare minimum stripped down version of Windows XP Professional. It doesn't install anything that isn't needed and I think I read somewhere that it only has 13 processes running in the background.
Any reason why this wouldn't work with boot camp and parallels? Drivers and everything should be fine right since, at heart, it is still just Windows XP, right?

When Windows 7 arrives on October 22, assuming you're updating to it: Which edition best fits your needs? I'm a power user, so Windows 7 Ultimate is the obvious best fit for me.

When reading the setup guide for bootcamp, the page that lists what you need for the process says "Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later" is required...However, the installation disk that came with my Windows XP reads Service Pack 1, Version 2002.What should I do? Can I proceed with Service Pack 1? If not, how do I get service pack 2?

I benched tested the new GTX 285 Mac Edition and the 8800 GT Mac Edition using X-Plane.
I used the same version (9.22 rc1) for both OS X 10.5.7 and Boot Camp WinXP.
I flew in North Dakota in order to eliminate as many objects and scenery as possible thereby making X-Plane as efficient as possible.
The flight was from Grand Forks (KGFK) to Crookston (KCKN). The length of the flight is 23.59 nautical miles and took 7 1/2 minutes.
I used a King Air B200 with a ground speed of 240 knots.
The renderings (1600 x 1200, 8xAA) and weather was exactly the same in both OS X and WinXP.
I flew three times for each video card and each operating system for a total of 12 flights. I averaged out the fps.
The 8800 GT Mac Edition is 2.3 times faster running under Boot Camp (WinXP) than the same 8800 GT running under Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Running under the same OS (Mac OS X 10.5.7), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 2.7 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
Running under the same OS (Boot Camp WinXP), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 1.6 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
My conclusion is the NVIDIA cards run much faster under Windows than they do with Mac OS X.

So just got my new MacBook Pro yesterday and loving it! I just got VMware Fusion and have a quick question (just don't want to mess anything up).
I have the Windows XP Black Edition image file, when I hit "Continue without Disk" on Fusion, next options are "Use installation disk image file", "Use existing virtual disk" or "Create custom virtual machine".
If I just have the .iso, what option should I go with?

I'm looking for recommendations for software (web-based or locally run) to help me build some basic PHP applications. And truly not full applications, just a few items to augment a site already built. If the application can write queries in AJAX that would be great. I know some basics and can get in trouble but want my admin to do a few things for me and I hope a WYSWG program that can work with a SQL database would speed the process up.

I am currently using excel 08 and have made a workbook with multiple worksheets in it. Each worksheet contains information on multiple products, such as description, UPC, cost, retail, sale cost, sale retail, how many items sold during sale, etc. Sales are two weeks, so every two weeks, I add a new worksheet with new information for sales I will be running a few weeks down the road. I would like to see if there is a way that I can have excel look through the past worksheets so when I enter a UPC into the new worksheet, there would be a column at the end that would take the average items sold during past sales.
For example, if I want to put UPC 1234500000 on sale in the new worksheet, that excel would look at past times I had 1234500000 on sale and take the average of how many sold during past sales and enter that number in a cell on the new worksheet. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but Column D is where I enter UPC info, Column P is where I put how many sold, and Column Q is where I want this average sold to appear (no matter what worksheet).

just trying to get back into Windows 7 after installing it via Boot Camp. Only thing is that holding down the option key during restart does nothing, and although the partition in which Windows 7 is installed under shows up in finder, I am unable to view it in system preferences so that I can boot from it. Any advice?

I installed Windows Vista, and Vista boots up fine. However, I hold down the command keys when starting my computer up again, and it won't let me select Mac OS X. It just starts Vista.
On "My Computer" in Vista I see "Bootcamp (C" and "Macintosh HD (E in my Hard Disks Drives. Also, whenever I start up Vista it tells me something about a wrongly formatted drive. My files are still all in the Mactintosh HD drive, but I don't know how to start up Mac OS X.

So, with new UMBP, i saw the RAM is now expandable up to 8 gigs. Seeing as how it is practically the same hardware as the UMB, is the UMB expandable to 8 gigs??? I believe officially, they were only supported to 4, but if 8 is possible, I would love to get 8. Any thoughts/concrete knowledge on this topic?

The 8800GT in my Mac Pro 1,1 just died. I'm back up with the 7300 for now.
Can I adapt the EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition for use? It comes with the cables, and I more than willing to pay the extra $$$ to save myself hunting around for parts.
I'm also a bit confused about the 4870 upgrade. Does the Apple version work out of the box on my 1,1? If so, maybe that's the way to go for now?
