Jan 22, 2009

i'm trying to install a program i got for free onto my macbook pro.

i have to go to my applications > utilities > terminal

i then open up a new command line and enter this:

sudo /Applications/ /etc/hosts

then it asks for my password and i type in my password for my computer, the only password i have ever had for this computer, and the password that authenticates all of the system changes.

OS X :: Sudo Not Working - Permission Denied

Mar 4, 2008

I've used sudo before successfully, but suddenly it doesn't work anymore! For example, I try setting a shutdown timer using:

sudo shutdown -h +60
sudo pmset disksleep 30
or even just
and get
sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied
Just typing sudo alone results in the same error.

I've tried searching and following other threads on this topic to no avail. Repairing permissions from disk utility didn't help either.

OS X :: Cannot Run Sudo Command In Terminal

Nov 29, 2009

I can't seem to run a sudo command in the OS X terminal. Every time I run a sudo command, I get no response, as if the command is not run at all. My sudo appears to be broken somehow. I've got a problem with mounting an NTFS drive that is dirty. I have a command I am trying to run using the "sudo" command, but it is not working.

Code: sudo /usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g /dev/disk0s3 /Volumes/WIN XP -o force

After the sudo, I am prompted for my password, but after that the only response I get is another prompt, as if the command was totally ignored. I have tried many different commands after the sudo, and cannot get a response from anything. I even tried "sudo tcsh", which should open up a new shell, but nothing. "sudo ls" also shows nothing, just another prompt.

MacBook Pro :: SUDO Command - How To Remove A User Using Terminal

Mar 30, 2012

So I just inherited from my coworker's MacBook Pro. I then decided to transfer all of my files and realized that the root folder was still on his name. I changed the User's name in "System Preferences" but that did not change the root folder's name. I then went to Terminal and tried to change the folder's name using the "mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName"  and the prompt said Permission denied. I then used "sudo mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName". After restarting my computer, all the files were gone and I landed on a "LION first time USE" type of Desktop. All my files are gone and terminal shows me two users' names under /Users/ => OldUser and NewUser.

What can I do to recover my old files? What can I do to repair my Mistake and only have one User?

I get a "sudo: tmutil: command not found" message on terminal when I am trying to inherit backups as per the fantastic instructions on the website by pondini. What does it mean and how can I correct it?

My old backups on time machine are not highlighted on time machine so cannot restore them. This is either because I have restored the OS or repaired the external HD used for backups.

Except it doesn't recognize my admin password as correct. I know I'm entering the correct password - is there any way to resolve this short of re-installing the OS?

Applications :: Itunes Password Not Working

Jul 5, 2010

So earlier today i was able to download apps via my iphone off of the app store by verifying my password and everything was completely fine. Then later on, i tried to download another app and was told my password was invalid...tried 3 more times and was still not working. So i figured it might be my phone and i tried my password on my computer and it was still invalid. I immediately checked my bank account and nothing was charged. So i did the whole "iForgot" thing and sent an email to myself to change the password, but i never received anything. So i did the second option which was to verify my birthday, but when i did, it said my information was invalid. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on what i should do or if this has happened to anyone else.

OS X :: Connection To The Printer Stopped Working - Password Needed?

Sep 6, 2010

My daughter has a MacBook with OS X 10.4.11. Due to its age & configuration, the OS X can't be updated any further.

Her MacBook is networked through my iMac (OS X 10.6.4) and is setup to print via my printer.

The connection to the printer stopped working, I tried to troubleshoot it, but needed the admin password. She didn't know if she had one so I used the installation disk to change eliminate the need for one. But for some things I'm asked for the keychain password, she doesn't remember if she has one.

According to the keychain help, the keychain password should automatically be the same as the admin or login password. There isn't a login password anymore, and keychain isn't accepting a blank password,so I'm locked out of some functions requiring the keychain.

I created a new keychain, but when online, I get a lot of unverified certificate errors. I try to change them individually to accept them, but I'm asked for the keychain password. If I can access the old keychain, is there a way to copy all of its certificates to the new keychain?

I can't figure out how to change the keychain password for the old keychain as without it, I can't accept certificates even with the new keychain. I'm really stuck.
