this is the second time i have encountered this problem. when i plug in an external hard drive via USB, the lights go on and i can hear the hard drive clicking a whirring but cannot find it anywhere on my mac. both with hard drives formatted on pc's and macs.
running a G4 Powerbook, power PC 1.67ghz
I can't read any external hard drive on my laptop, but both mine and my friends smaller 250g WD HD were visible on his mac.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.
Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..
hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have two external hard drives connected to my airport extreme. The hard drives don't act like they would if they were connected directly to my macbook, though.
For instance, I'm trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner to sync the two hard drives and they won't show up in the program. They also don't mount as they normally would and they don't show up in disk utility.
I'm using version 7.5.2... I think that is the latest version - I recently upgraded and I'm not sure if thats why I can't do the aforementioned things.
I can't figure out how to use an older version though (reinstalled the software that came with the airport extreme but that didn't work).
Since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7.4 I am unable to mount any of my G-Tech Raid hard drives.

I've been using this MBP since 2007, and, it's starting to fail me. I was using an external hdd on it since the internal one crashed, and, then the external one crashed. I just purchased a 250gig hdd which fits perfectly in my Macbook, but, now I have another issue that's been pressing me for some time that didn't bother me at all until now when I need to install Snow Leopard;
My Super Drive isn't reading discs at all, and, it's making this scary crackling noise. I uploaded a video on youtube of me putting 2 discs in it, 1 with content (World of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne) and the other without content (Just a blank CD).
Before I link the video, I'd like to note that I am apparently amazed by the laser seeing as how I point to it and make a note of it ._. URL
Every time I reboot my computer my external drives are all set to "read only". I have to eject them, and remount them and things are then fine again, but this is an annoying step and the fact that a reboot is causing them to switch to read-only is having me worried.
Anyone else have this problem/know of a solution?

I have a general question about a recently upgraded 2006 Mac Pro.
I recently upgraded my boot drive to a 1TB Western Digital 7200RPM sata drive.
I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro late 2006. Running leopard. 4Gb Ram. Radeon 4870 HD (recently added). two other sata drives as backup. (200GB and 350GB, about 4 years old)
With the new drive I notice an odd clicking sound when ever I shut it down or send it into standbye.
Like the drive is just stopping instead of spinning down... I have heard that this can cause permanant drive failure... Is this an issue I need to be concerned with?
My computer (MBP 5,5) makes this sound several times throughout a day of use. It sounds exactly like the little "click" sound the computer makes, when i close the lid and have it go into sleep mode. I guess it's the hard drive going to sleep sound? If i'm right, i really don't understand why the hard drive goes to sleep at these random times. I've disabled that in System Preferences - at least i think so. It's this option, right?: [URL] Also, my MBP is always (only use it as a desktop with an external monitor connected to it) on a mStand on my table, so it can't be the Sudden Motion Sensor either.

It is a scratching noise that I assume is coming from my internal hard drive (hard drive is stock, has never been replaced). It isn't a super loud noise, but it sounds like the noise some hard drives make when they are "searching" or "thinking". I have a late 2007 MacBook running OS X 10.5.8 that I upgraded with a Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM drive not long after I purchased it. It's been working great until about a week ago when I noticed a very quiet and frequent clicking/whirring sound coming from the drive as I was using it. My first reaction was that it might be the "click of death," but I wasn't getting any errors or having issues booting the machine, and the clicking was very periodic and not sudden like a drive crash. I verified the disk using Disk Utility and it checks out. I then opened up Activity Monitor and started watching the Disk Activity and sure enough I see a big red spike in I/O Data Written every time I hear the clicking sound, which is about every 20 seconds or so. Is my drive actually dying a slow, clicking death, or is there a rogue process writing to the disk and causing the sound? Is there a way to find out what it is?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe past couple days I have been using my Macbook and all of the sudden out of nowhere the message that pops up when you press the power button on your macbook while in OSX would pop up out of nowhere. It would just come up out of nowhere without me pressing anything. My Macbook could just be sitting there and it would pop up.
Fast forward to today and I used software update to upgrade the firmware. After I restarted the computer my Macbook would not even turn on. No lights, no chimes, no nothing. I don't even get a light on my magsafe power adapter when I plug it into my Macbook anymore.I tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, reseating the RAM, and turning it on without the battery in and it still won't turn on.What else can I do? My warranty period JUST expired so I don't want to shell out $500+ to get this thing fixed. Could my logic board be dead?
I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.
Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive.From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master.What is the best way to perform this task?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a 2TB WD mirror edition that is setup in RAID 1 so it will mirror all my data. Now I also have a bunch of other drives laying around which I also feel the need to back up and currently I am doing this by doing a whole bunch of dragging and dropping and copying and pasting etc etc etc and this is making me very tired. I know that a setup is possible in disk utility but I am not at all sure about how to configure it so I wont lose any of my data.

Harddrives: two 1TB WD MyBooks, and two 500gig WD Mybooks --> these pairs need to mirror each other and make my life less of a hassle.
I often use external hard drives to back up my work. Recently I purchased a 1TB Lacie drive. I took a week to build a lovely new file structure for my work. At the end of this week, I began deleting the old files on other hard drives so as to transfer my new neatly structured work back on. In the midst of this, the brand new hard drive crashed, illiciting only the clicking sound of death.
That hard drive, some of my work (a very small amount but still) and a week's worth of sweat and blood was gone in an instant. The person I took it to to look at it mentioned a power surge as being a possible cause for the crash. Anyway, I returned the lacie and bought a 1T Western Digital Mybook (silver). I then began dumping the old back ups onto this.
A week in and this one is crashed too. No clicking sound of death. It calmly sits on my desk with it's unceasing unblinking blue light and refuses to show up in utilities no matter what I do. So I assume it's a goner also. I'll return it also of course. Is something causing these drives to fail...that exists in my walls? Are there power surges causing my drives to die...? OR is it simply a case of bad luck with my choices of new drives?
I was done doing various tasks on the iMac and when I decided to plug in the external hard drive for a Time Machine backup, the drive spun, but was never shown on the desktop.I also tried another external drive and had the same thing happen.
After rebooting (hey, this sounds like Windows!), the drive again showed up on the desktop and Time Machine worked fine.Is an external hard drive not showing up on the desktop a somewhat common issue?

My macbook pro 13" Mid 2010 model will simply not turn on! I tried does SMC and PRAM but still no results. The Macbook gives me 3 green blinking lights on the battery indicator and nothing else. I already tried switching the ram for a dead or faulty ram but still nothing. Also the power adapter doesn't seem to want to work. I have only used up about 100GB of 1.5TB and for some reason when I plugged it in today it wont let me load anything onto it and if you click get info on it, it says you can only read.

I have 2 external hard drives one specifically for mac the other is for either mac or Windows base PC. I backed up on my mac using the time capsule back up now. When I attach to a usb ion my windows PC it wont read or even pick up either external discs, is this normal. How do I get files from my mac to windows based PC, it does work using a memory stick. But why won't PC pick up the drives.

i'm cloning my mac hd (mac book pro, snow leopard) and though i've made successful clones, the sum of the hard drives (mac hd and external hd) don't match. for instance, my mac hd reads at: 233.71 GB, however the cloned external hd reads at: 216.54 GB. can anyone explain this discrepancy? are there certain things that don't go into the clone that are on the mac hd?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been using a MBP for a few months now and I am making a total conversion from PC user to Mac user in January when I buy a nice new 24" iMac but to go with it, I want to buy a couple of new external hard drives. I have currently got a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB USB Drive which is Windows Formatted and I will be keeping that to use with my work laptop (a Dell), and I have been really pleased with its reliability. Anyway, I have been looking around and there are some fab drives on the market but I have a couple of questions. If I get an iMac with a 500GB Internal Hard Drive, how big an External hard drive will I need to use Time Machine without having to delete backups all the time?
Also, I have been primarily looking at the new Seagate FreeAgent drives and the do a PC version (USB) and a Mac version (USB/FW400/FW800), but the 640GB USB version costs �76 whereas the 500GB FW version costs �100. Would you go for the bigger size or the added benefits of FW800? Will I notice much speed difference between USB and FW800?
