Software :: System Makes Many Copies Of Each Photo - Startupdisk Full

Jan 15, 2010

I have a 2007 Mac and my start up disk is FULL. I have tried deleting files but nothing helps. I only have music and pictures on my computer and for some reason my computer makes 6+ copies of almost every picture I have. I can't tell which photos to delete because some are small or out of focus and it would take days to go through every photo.

I did buy an external hard drive and started backing up everything but I'm not sure what the next step would be.

MacBook Pro :: Two Copies Of OSX On Same System?

Oct 19, 2010

I have been running OSX on both partitions of a dual partitioned drive for some time now. I need to do this because I run both Avid and Final Cut. Avid hates when you update your system and Final Cut hates when you don't update your system. I keep all my media on an external and both partitions use it for storage. The solution I have works great, except I'm running out of storage space on my internal drive.

I'd like to move the Avid partition out to a USB drive and boot from that for the rare times I use Avid. I'd still keep my media on an external and use my internal drive for the primary boot (my final cut system). I hear this would be a horribly slow option though as a flash drive is not quite fast enough for a boot option.

My alternative is install OSX on my external. I hear this is a bad idea too because that is where I keep my media. Apparently you should not cut video with your capture media and your OS on the same drive because they are accessed at different speeds.

Here is my question. Which option is the lesser of two evils? Is it better to boot from a flash drive or boot from the same drive as captured media?

I have a Macbook, Mac OS X 10.5.8.I got it for long time, and I never use Expose because I dont really need to, but I was bored and I used it only for trying, so there was6 squares, 2 columns and 3 rows, I marked one for photoshop another for lightroom and another for system pref etc.but then I erased on column and a window pop up and said something and I did not read it, click ok and I closed (stupid) system preference window and so now gone, I can't make it appear for canceling Expos謠I tried what I looked up in internet using:Fn+f9 or fn+f10, the window is marked as if its open, If I minimze it, it appears in the dock, I tried moving down into the squares of expose and does not appear, I tried leaving the click button on the dock of system pref and wont appear and I tried to hide everything except system preference but still i can't see the window, i can not even change the time of any other thing from there.

Every once in a while my Mac Mini will start to chirp/squeak. It almost sounds like crickets. It started doing it again about 5-10 minutes ago and just stopped as I began typing this post. Does that sound like it could be the fan making the noise or the hard drive? I would think that if it were the drive I would here it MUCH more often.

OS X :: I Cannot Find Photo Booth & Video In My System?

Aug 28, 2010

Me and some friends were messing around on Photo Booth and we took a lengthy video (about 10 minutes) to put up on Youtube. We weren't done with the video and everything was still recording when I left for a minute. When I returned, Photo Booth was closed. My friend has never used a Mac before and he's not sure what he did. He says he was trying to quit out of another program and he might've accidentally quit Photo Booth. Either that, or he pressed the X, thinking it was the minimize button on Windows.Anyways, where is the part of the video that we actually recorded? Did the entire thing not get saved at all just because we might've quit out of the program near the end of our video?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Installing A FULL System On A USB Key?

Jun 21, 2012

I am trying to install a full Lion system on a USB key. I am not talking about a Cracker Jack installer and disk utility thing. I am talking about a full useable system. Why would I want to do this? Let's see, I have a 3 month old MacBook Air with a failing SSD, a brand new Mac Pro with NO THUNDERBOLT jack, an over-designed FireWire to Thunderbolt dongle that Apple took 2 YEARS to develop and still has yet to bring to market (which may or may not support Target Disk Mode on FireWire Macs... like my brand new tower) and NO way to run Carbon Copy Cloner on a booted system that can see the failing SSD as a local disk. I'm sure I don't need to mention the kick in the pants that is Spotlight trying to index a failing drive, corrupting data as it does so. Sorry but I don't have access to a THIRD mac with Thunderbolt. Just these two very new machines. If there is no way to get the MacBook Air mounted in Target Disk Mode on another mac, I need to boot it from a System that is not corrupting files like crazy due to media failure. I can't use the brilliant new "Recovery Partition" thing they created because, well, that's also on the failing disk.

When I run the 10.7 installer on the MacBook it says this is an unsupported system. Years ago it was possible to install OSX to a disk other than the boot disk without rebooting the machine. Not any more. When I clone Mac OS Install ESD to a thumb drive and try to boot from it, I get the big X. When I try to make the USB key on the tower, after needlessly rebooting it, of course, using ANOTHER USB key with the ESD image, my target USB key (which is 64gb) is greyed out, and hence not selectable as a target volume for the installation.

MacBook Pro :: Putting The Full File System On A SSD?

May 4, 2012

I'm thinking about getting a macbook pro with an SSD (and I know the refresh is just around the corner, but for business reasons, this money has to be spent now).   It seems most people put the OS and apps on the SSD, and keep a hard drive for all their data. If I could pare down my data suffiently, would it be reasonable to put the whole file system on an SSD? My worries is that the frequently-created files like various /tmp files would significantly reduce the life of the SSD, even if I have TRIM support.(I'm thinking about getting one of the OWC Mercury Extreme SSDs, for what it's worth.)

My question is, what can I do to start/restart my Mac and is there anything else I can do to free up my Startup disc.

Hardware :: Full System Restore From Time Machine?

Got a new (used) 15" MBP and I'm trying to do a full system restore via Tima Capsule over the network. Started it last night at 11PM Estimated time was 15 hours.. Just got home from work the next day 5PM and it now says 5 Hours. But it jumps up a few minutes then down.

I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?

OS X :: How To Repair System After Full Restore To Time Machine Backup

Jan 13, 2011

I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.

After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.

Each folder has approximately 20 GB for a total of 40 GB. Can I simply toss this folder? It does not seem to do anything. The folder must have been created from a backup some time ago. I don't recall doing that.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restore Selective Intonation Vs Full Installation Compromised System

Mar 15, 2012

I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings..My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings

1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs

2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area

Other factors

1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season

2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc

3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?

4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?

5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details

6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?

What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?
