Software :: Converting .mkv Files For ITunes/aTV/iPhone Compatibility?
Dec 27, 2008
Yes I know all about Visual Hub, Handbrake, ffmpegX, etc, etc...My question isn't about what tool should be used, but more along the lines of how to use that specific tool as effectively as possible, given that which is most important to me (which I've listed below)...
Without complicating the issue, consider this...
If you had 10 .mkv files (Matroska Multimedia Container files) ranging from 4GB - 7GB in size, and you wanted to convert these files so that they could be viewed in iTunes, on your Apple TV, and/or on your iPhone, how would you do it?
Additional criteria that matters to me:
I don't really care if the movies show up in ultra mega super-duper hi-def in iTunes or on my aTV, just so long as it looks pretty darn good I would really like to avoid having each of these files show up as 4GB m4p files on my iPhone, so that I can avoid having 3 or 4 measly movies taking up all the space on my device...My ideal size range would be anywhere between 500MB (on the very low end of the scale) and 2.5GB (on the very high end of the scale)...somewhere right in the middle would probably be best... I would like to have a single file that was compatible with all of my devices, as opposed to having an aTV version of a movie, and an iPhone version of the same movie
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can offer with this issue (which is completely subjective I realize...but for this reason, the more input the merrier)...and please be as specific as you can regarding the precise settings you would choose for your chosen app, and why you would use them?
I know how to do this about 10 ten ways, and that's the problem...I'd like to know "THE" way (that works best for me of course, and with your input, hopefully I can figure that out!)...

I know this is an ongoing issue that many people are having but does anyone know if a fix is going to be put in place to address this? It seems that whenever I transfer a 320 kb album with artwork from my itunes to my iphone and have itunes converting it down to 256 to conserve space that it gets rid of the arwork. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

I was working with my brother import his cds into Itunes on his new Mac. I told him to import them as AAC files, but unfortunately he thought I said AIFF. He has imported his whole collection at CD quality, but now his computer is nearly full with his Itunes library. Is there a way to move the files to another hard drive, then create a new Itunes library, and have Itunes convert the AIFF files to AAC files when you drag and drop them into a new library? Or does he need to re-import his whole cd collection? The other option I thought of is to export as AAC from Itunes?

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem? Whenever I import a cd into iTunes, or convert a track to a different bit rate, it literally uses all my computer's memory/CPU. I cannot use the computer for anything else during this time as it's far far too slow, to the point where programs won't even open. This wasn't always the case, but it seems with each new version of iTunes it becomes worse and worse. I import at a pretty low bitrate 128 mp3. I am only trying to surf the net when I'm importing, I'm not doing anything else or using/running any other programs. If I do try to use another program (like my email program - outlook) it will barely open, takes forever to do anything, and wants to freeze. I can't use Microsoft Word because typing anything is impossible. Massive lag before the typed words show up.

I have an MP3 file I'd like as a ringtone. I remember on Vista you just right clicked it and renamed it to M4R. Done.
How do I do this on a Mac? I convert to AAC, open it in Finder, rename it to M4R. Won't open.

Recently switched computers to a MacBook Pro, and have my other iMac's desktop drive now in an enclosure. It failed while inside the older machine, but seems to operate just fine as an external hard drive. I would like to access the iTunes/iPhone recent backup/restore files, as well as the Contacts/Addressbook files. I understand that, using the Finder's "Go," command, and holding the option key, present the crucially hidden "Library" folder...Â
Can this be done with an external hard drive, therefore presenting the needed files for extraction, or "drag-and-drop" style, into appropriated folders? If so, what commands would one use to show these files? By simple navigation, they are not shown in the main Library- Application Support folders. (I was able to locate and transfer the regular iTunes Library .xml file, for Apps & Music; however, that isn't the iPhone backup files)Â

I am looking for a basic app (free if possible) that can help me convert movie files. For example, I took a video with my digital camera and the extension is .avi. I want to put on my iphone, which I believe only handles mp4 or m4v.

I have some large video files on an external drive, and I'd like to put them on my iPhone. I have very limited hard drive space on my computer, so I'd rather not copy all of the files onto my iTunes library. Is there any way to transfer the files directly onto my iPhone from the external drive?

I have a macbook and an iMac, I am using a Time Capsule to store files that I may want to access on both (within the home). I have put all my iTunes on it as a 80g HD is not enough on a macbook for all the songs, vids, etc. It worked when a wired HD was with the iMac but now its wireless iTunes seems to forget some of the songs. Not all of them just some of them. It happens when I Sync my iPhone with the Macbook. The capsule has been on the whole time and I just leave it on all the time so its on before the macbook or imac. When I click "get info" the file path is the same as what I would manually enter, so why cant they be found?

I am thinking of buying a new mac mini that I will use for my studies when I go to sixth form in september, but I am worried that there might be some compatibility issues with windows based files, such as if I need to email someone something but they are one a windows pc, or if I need to open a file that was designed on a windows pc. Does anyone know of any that I should know about? This would be my first mac so I don't know the deal with them. Should I just stick with a windows pc?

After converting my mod file to mp4 then uploading it to final cut pro the quality is really bad and jumpy.
I used MPEG streamclip... The quality is good after the mod - mp4 conversion it's only after i import it to final cut pro that the quality becomes really bad.
I don't have this problem when i am importing other files just the mod-mp4 converted ones.

I've got some .ra files which I can't get to play. RealPlayer no longer supports .ra files, and while there are a few threads saying to use MPlayerOSX, that doesn't recognise them either.
The files are available online at the Lost Cosmonauts website. I've no reason to believe the files provided are corrupt or broken in any way.

I'm sure a few of us in this forum own a 360, have any of you managed to play any REAL HD content without purchasing the HD-DVD player or converting your .mkv's to .wmv's. I've noticed that if I download a 1080p trailer from apple.com/trailers in .mov format it works flawlessly, perfect image and audio. Is there a (quick) way to convert a .mkv to .mov and have it play perfectly with no hitch, on the 360. If trailers off apple.com can play there must be a workaround. Below I've posted a screen of the downloaded trailers info that I got off of apple tv.

I had a quick question. I have a DVD audio disk that was "imaged", a .iso file. When I open it in OSX, it mounts the image as a drive and I can access the files inside. Using VLC I can play the .VOB audio files.I would like to convert the files to either FLAC or MP3 so I can archive them on my computer and also burn them to CD-R as I can't play the DVD-A outside my computer. So I was curious were there are programs/freeware to convert these files.

I just got my first Apple computer three days ago, an iMAC. My question is: I need a recommendation for a 3rd party file conversion software program that will enable me to convert WAV (song) files (that I will export into the iMAC) into MP3 files. On my PC I used "dBPoweramp" but it is only a windows-based program.

I have searched everywhere and can not get a good answer. I just bought myself a new imac and this is my first mac. I used to use convertxtodvd on my pc.
I read that toast titanium does a good job of converting any video file to dvd but you can not download it to try it out, you just have to buy it. I do not want to waste my money if it does not turn out to be the quality I am looking for.
Any suggestions of any programs that does this task and performs well?

I was wondering if there was an easy way to take a very long image, and convert it to a several page PDF file. I have Dragoman, which converts PNG files to PDFs, although it keeps it as one page. I would like it to automatically split the long image into several pages. Is there any way of doing this short of editing the image and exporting each page length section separately? If there isn't a Mac program, is there a Windows program that can do it? I have Parallels too, but either way I would like to know.

I'm running out of disk space due to loads of RAW files in Aperture. I was wondering if it's possible to convert all the files in my library to jpeg (masters + edited) and move the RAW files to an external HDD just in case.
