Software :: Applications Not Working Like Adressbook, Textedit, Changing Languages, Installer
Dec 22, 2008
All these little programs like adressbook, textedit, changing languages, installer ... do not work anymore. The computer starts opening the programm and goes on working and working and nothing happens. Some days before, I tried to start the letter info (i dont know how it is calles in English, I am German) of teh finder. Know the mac always tries to open this window, so that he works very vert slowly. I have to wait minutes clicking something.any ...
Having trouble with my iMac and the installer. I'm running up to date Lion 10.7.3. I first noticed this when I got an adobe flash update. Once I press the install button after the file has downloaded I get the usual computer admin box asking for my password. I fill this in and press OK and the admin box disappears but no installation happens. Its the same with any dmg file I download from the net but apps from the appstore download straight into launchpad fine. Its not that the password is wrong as when I do type an incorrect password the admin box jiggles in the usual apple incorrect fashion and stays on the screen. Â
Recently, running Snow Leopard, the one made to install .pkg file aka installer.app stopped working. I click on a package file to install, the installer app opens, but then it just sits there. It's definitely open and running, but it's not running installer I clicked on to run.
EDIT: I also tried taking the Installer Application from another mac and replacing the one on my computer with that one, but the problem still persists.
I just bought a MacBook a few months ago, and I am having trouble with languages. On my old PC, if you are switching between languages, such as Japanese and English, it remembers which languages you are using in which applications, and keeps them separate. Thus if I am simultaneously using an online dictionary (typing in Japanese), and typing a research paper in MSWord (in English), it keeps these separate and I can do both at the same time. However, on my Mac, it seems to change the language for *all* applications at once, so I have to constantly switch back and forth. Also, Word seems to change the font every time automatically to a Japanese font, so actually every time I switch between Firefox and Word I have to do things 3 times (switch languages, switch back, then switch the font back).
My mom re-invented herself and decided to use my laptop..thats fine with my but she got this ability to mess up with stuff so i created an account on my MB so she can log in under her name but my account is in english and hers not..how do i install two firefoxes in 2 different languages? When I install FF when logged in as she it will change the localization of my FF.
Macs Console says this every time I try to update from 10.6.7 - 10.6.8Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "10:08 PM Installer[244] The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."Â I can't update what so ever... every application basically needs to be manually installed or just comes to an unknown error either restarting the Mac or going through standalone...
I just purchased iWork 09 and I'm using a language that writes from right to left. I notice that Numbers, after I deselect the cell switches the writing from right to left to the opposite. Does this mean Numbers doesn't support RTL languages??? Pages seems to work fine but Numbers doesn't
I'm running osx 10.6.4 and Adobe Reader is giving me fits. It doesn't play well. How do I change the default PDF reader from Adobe to Preview or iArchiver? Adobe Reader just grabs hold of the download and won't let go.
I have a situation in which TextEdit simply will not Quit. It is constantly loaded. Even after a system reboot TextEdit is always loaded and displays a blank text edit window. The blank text edit window can be closed by not TextEdit application itself. Somehow, perhaps some setting, configuration, or possible conflict with another program it is being forced to stay open. It is not causing any system problems to my knowledge, but it is an irritant.
I am trying to create a manual which includes some screen snaps which fit on A4 paper, but TextEdit persistently has fat margins and won't print the images that are wider than width allowed by the margins.
The screen grabs appear on screen but when I print the document the wider images do not print although they leave a gap in the text equal to their height.
I have:
Adjusted the preferences:
for window width which is in No of Characters (how wide is a character when you are using rtf?)
checked Wrap to window which shows a page view but the margins don't change
I have created an entire new page in Page Setup with fixed margins and selected it but nothing changes
Mac Help says the margins can be altered by dragging the page margin markers in the ruler, but they will not drag outside what seems to be the default margins, This wouldn't help with top and bottom margins anyway.
I have tried using Acrobat PDF as the printer but again I get no further options and nothing changes.
I am at my wits end. TextEdit is almost temptingly useful except for the weird UI.
I am having some real "first" problems with my Mac Pro. The "repair" function is not able to do anything with it. Before I replace the disc, is there something I can do without replacing the disc? I have no idea what this malfunction is or how o understand it. This is my first Mac since the late '90's and I expected problems, it's a computer, and am not sure of the steps I need to analyze the problem or how to correct it. The only thing I need to back up are my clients photographs. The rest is replaceable. Perhaps I should also get advice on how to properly burn CD's for b/u of my wifes email. Well, my email also.
I need to change the default TextEdit behavior; white text on black background. Looked around and I can't seem to find a solution. White on black is much easier on the eyes.
If I open TextEdit, it seems to work ok. But if I open an existing file (RTF), TextEdit opens but is "not responding" (says the Activity Monitor), for about 2 minutes. Then the file I wanted to open suddenly appears and works fine.
How come? And how can I make TextEdit work normally again?
For reasons which escape me, since I rebooted yesterday, I have been unable to launch TextEdit, Preview or Pages - they just say not responding when their icon is ctrl-clicked in the Dock. I just checked Numbers and Keynote, which I have never used and after their initial welcome screen, they too became unresponsive. As far as I can tell, GarageBand, iPhoto and probably others in iLife are unaffected, neither are Mail and Safari.Â
I found that a similar problem was being experienced a few years ago by some people using TextEdit and Preview and it was solved by re-signing the application in Terminal. I have tried that but it hasn't worked. I have repaired permissions and I'm just downloading the Mavericks installer so that I can make a USB installer and re-install OS X 10.9.3.Â
I am downloading which may save me the trouble of re-installing OS X 10.9.3, I'd be very grateful.
I want to run Inkscape on SL but i misplaced my SL install disc. I couldnt find an installer on Apple's site, is X11 available to download anywhere or do i just need to keep looking for my disc?
I just bought a macbook 10.6.2 and I've got a CD with SPSS 17.0 (inclusive license etc)the macbook does read the CD but does not run the SPSS installer when I try to open it
I am sitting with a friends recently purchased iBook G4, 1 Ghz, 40 GB, 512 MB RAM. Wanted to update it for him. put an 80 GB HD in it that used to run on a mini G4 ppc chip. Also I transferred a 512 block of RAM from the same machine.
Now the machine doesn't start though. The HD starts the spinning process, but thats it. Also tried to boot from different system cd's/DVD's but to no avail.
So, I first started noticing this problem a couple of days ago.
1. My dock doesn't work right. I have it set to auto hide/show. It worked fine up until now. Now for it to show, I have to click where it normally would appear, then I have to click in another window to hide it.
2. My cursor in Firefox, and other applications, doesn't change when hovering over links. It gets damn irritating now, as I'm used to links changing the cursor.
Any ideas what may be causing these problems? I'm running 10.5.5 with all latest software patches on an early '08 Macbook.
I changed my Internet Service Provider from Sky Broadband to Virgin Media.Â
The Internet is working fine, but I cannot receive email. I have two hotmail accounts, they are called "hotmail.co.uk" and "hotmail.co.uk 2" the first one is working again after I went into Connection Doctor, but the other one is saying "Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct"Â
I checked the settings in the Preferences menu and these all look OK, so I can't work out why it's not working. I even tried adding it as a new account but it tells me that the email address is already set up.Â
I have OS X version 10.6.1. I run the installer, (it's for the 30 day trial) and it ays "Searching iMac 2" (my volume's name) and it stalls, and I have to force quit it. What gives? I really need to get it working, does anyone know if it's related to the installer?
Some of my applications that came with OS X 10.4.11 have become damaged. I have tried two ways of replacing them from the 10.4.11 Combo installer package downloaded from Apple. I removed the faulty ones from my Applications folder and then ran the installer. None of the applications were downloaded into my Applications folder. I used Pacifist to look into the installer package. In the Applications folder within the package, all (or most) of the applications had the generic icon that shows that an application is broken or incomplete, and when I extracted two of them by means of Pacifist, they retained that icon and did not work. And, more importantly, how I can obtain working versions of iCal and Address Book?
