I used the boot camp manager to make a windows partition, and I made it 80GB. Then I restarted the computer and the XP installer opened. When I select where to install XP, the only option is a 130GB Disc. Leopard is 150GB and XP is 80GB, so where did it find this drive? Disk Utility clearly shows 2 partitions, nothing else. I didn't select it obviously because I don't want to screw up Leopard, but what should I do? Should I just bring it to the Apple store and have them do it for me?
Is it because I burned XP as a .cdr ? How do I make it into a .iso?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just had a second hard drive replaced on my Macbook pro which I have had a little over a year. After the first HD replacement I purchased a WD external drive to back time machine to. Time machine was set up to back up VM to Mac HD and then back Mac HD up to time machine. I am pretty much tech illiterate when it comes to restoring. I have managed to restore the Mac side of the computer, get the VM(Fusion) installed and also installed Windows. For the life of me I cannot find my Windows files. From all I have read there is a chance there may not be any files but I would like to make sure before I begin the long process of rebuilding.

I recently purchased Lion. When I downloaded the OS on my Mac Pro, it automatically installed itself. Where can I find the installer file if I want to install Lion on another Mac computer?

I have a MBP 13" early 2013 / Mountain Lion 10.8.2...A while ago I got a spinning wheel right after starting my mac. I contacted Apple since my mac was still under warranty, and after further diagnosis, they told me that I have to replace the HD, so they mail me a new HD.Â
I connected the new HD on a USB cable to format and re-partition it using Disk utility (At this point, DU was able to see the HD on a USB connection). After partitioning, I removed my Mac cover to replace my HDs. I booted using a Mountain Lion USB drive, but the installer couldn't find the new HD, just the recovery partition. I bought a new HD from Amazon, same result, my mac can start with teh old HD. Also, the disk utility can read the new HDs if they are on a usb connection, but it cant read them if they are on a SMART connection ! Â

The disk on one of our iMacs has failed, so I am seeking to replace it with a new drive and then restore from the current Time Machine backups stored on our Time Capsule. My plan was to attach the replacement drive to the iMac via a USB enclosure, format it, and recover the volume and once that is complete, replace the disk. The problem however is that the OS X installer's Restore System From Backups option does not display the correct backup volume. The Select A Backup Source displays only "Data" on network "tc" under the list of backup volumes.
Clicking on Connect to Remote DIsk brings up the authentication dialog, and I enter the correct credentials, but the volume list does not change, and the Continue button remains grayed-out. The syslog data from the Time Capsule confirms successful afp connections, and df confirms that the Data volume is being mounted from the TC. We have three Macs running 10.6.8, all writing their Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule running 7.6.1. Each computer has its own Time Capsule login ID, and all Time Machine backups have been working properly (new backups are being created and can recover files).
Using the Finder to examine the volumes on the Time Capsule, I can see that each computer has an empty Data volume and another volume with the computer's name which contains the sparse bundle that Time Machine is writing to. It looks like the issue is that the Installer is only looking for the Data volume and not showing the other volumes. Is there a super secret keyboard sequence I need to issue to get it to show the other volumes?

Ok, Here is the scoop. I am trying to get Wifi to work on my macbook while on XP. When I put in the disk and it says "The package requires a newer version of Windows Installer. Would you like to update?" I say yes and it says "The requires resoruce update is missing." and if I click no it says "The operation is aborted." or something.

Macs Console says this every time I try to update from 10.6.7 - 10.6.8Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "10:08 PM Installer[244] The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. possible it install Windows using a USB Flash Drive configured to function as an Install Disk? Using the generally accepted method for converting a USB flash drive to act as an installation disc my 2010 iMac 27 will not recognize this drive using the boot drive 'option' key method. After formatting the drive as an MBR disk to act as in installer the iMac will not recognize it as a bootable drive. This works fine on other Intel based computers and my GUID USB Flash Drive OSX install image works just fine and is recognizable as a bootable drive.

I know with Windows 7 Pro that one of the features is running XP seamlessly through a Virtual machine. I don't want to fork out an extra 100 bucks, so I am going to just go with Home Premium. My question to you guys is, is there a free third party way to run a Windows XP/Windows 2000 virtual machine with Windows
View 5 Replies View RelatedBut on the G5 next to it, I need to do some Windows testing. I managed pretty well with getting Parallels Window environments into a sandbox, just internet connectivity, access to the optical drives and one shared drive is perfect, and I want to achieve the same level of a sandbox in Virtual PC v7.
Background is, I've used VPC v3 on G3, v5 on my G4. Both of these were a dream (OK slow on the G3) but VPC 7 is required to run on my dual G5. From the manual I see it installs all kinds of intergration tools into the heart of the Mac OS (ouch), requires a restart (I restart about once every 3 months due to the amount of stuff I keep running). I can live with this, if I can be sure that I can turn off all the integration tools I don't want. From the manual I can see all the Application and Client OS Environment settings, some look as though they turn off unwanted features, but I would like to know from someone who used it, just how configurable it is into getting it into the proverbial sandbox.
I used the typical installation in parallels 5, of which it automatically set up the virtual hard drive size. if I find I need more space later on, is there anyway I can expand the virtual hard drive size? I have a macbook pro i7 2010 running windows 7 pro 64 bit.

trying to open DVDFab 6 under VMWare Fusion 2.0.5. All of my other needed applications run fine in VMWare, and DVDFab runs great via Bootcamp (Windows 7 RC 7100). My last hurdle to be fully switched over from my old PC is to get DVDFab up and running, preferrebly in VMWare so I don't have the hassle of having to reboot.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not very good at computers, and I don't know a lot about them, so please bear with me.
I want to install VMware on my iMac, so I'll be able to use Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows, which supports VBA, which I need for my work.
But I've heard a lot about how it's possible for something to go wrong while using the virtual machine, which might cause the whole HDD to get corrupted, as I've read here.
So I'm going to install VMware on my iMac, and partition my external HDD (111GB) so that I can install a virtual machine (Windows OS) on it, without risk of corrupting the whole HDD.
Now here's the big question:
If I were to install the virtual machine onto this external HDD, would I still be able to disconnect it from my iMac when I'm not running neither VMware nor the virtual machine at all? Would my iMac be alright if I were to start it up without the external HDD connected?
I ask this because I use this same external HDD to transfer big data files to and fro from different computers. So I will need to disconnect it from the iMac frequently.
I have tried both Parallels and VMware, but neither one will connect to the internet. I've searched all over for solutions for both and have yet to find something that will work. I've tried setting in each app as well as in OSX, but to no avail.
Let me know what information you need about my setup.
'd like to run Win 7 on virtualization software, but not sure of the best way to back up, as I've been reading a lot about how Time Machine (unless you configure it not to) will save the VM folder as one large file, which of course could make the back up tens of GBs and bloat a drive quickly. I'm planning to connect an external HDD partitioned for both Time Machine (for incremental backups) and Superduper(for more easily bootable restore).
VMware Fusion (for instance) recommends backing up within the VM itself. But this alone doesn't seem like a good strategy for catastrophic failure of a HDD.
I am trying to setup an XP virtual machine with its own IP address on the iMac so I can remote into it from my laptop. I have tried both VMWare Fusion and Parallels to do this. But the VM only sees the network in Shared mode (called Bridged mode in VMWare). But in that mode, the VM gets a random IP address not in the same subdomain as my local network.
When I change the networking mode to Bridged (called NAT in VMWare) the VM gets an IP in the correct sub domain (192.168.0.xxx) and it gets the auto configured Gateway (192.168.0.1) and DNS Server (192.168.0.1) but I can't see any machines on the network. I can't even ping the router (192.168.0.1). The only thing I can see (Ping) is the host iMac (192.168.0.3). But I can't see any other machines or connect to the internet.
I am getting identical behavior in both Parallels and VMWare fusion which makes me think I am doing something wrong.
I just bought my first mac a few days ago. It's a white macbook with snow leopard. I'm still getting used to everything on the mac side
I partitioned the 250 GB hard disk as:
Partition 1: 70 GB, Mac OS X
Partition 2: 150 GB, FAT32 for data sharing
Partition 3: 30 GB, FAT32 for Windows XP running through bootcamp
Everything works fine so far, OS X and Windows XP can see all three partitions. Now I'd like to run Windows in a virtual machine. I've done a lot of searching and can't find a solution where both Mac OS and the virtualized machine can see the large FAT32 shared Partition. Is there any way to make this work, and should I use VMware fusion or parallels?
If this is not possible, can Mac OS at least see the shared partition and copy files to the windows partition while the virtual machine is running so that the windows parition can access some of the files that were originally on the shared partition?
