View 7 RepliesI just went to the Apple store, and my friend (actually she is older than I am, like 15 years in difference. Just got friendly, so I call her 'friend') suggested me 100$ for 4GB upgrade. She told me that it's not possible to upgrade the RAM after the payment, but she is able to do it for me.
I'm always paranoid wether the Apple employees will give me the 'older' RAMs or 'used' ones. Should I be? or just trust the employee who will swap it for me.
If I have a choice, I would like to install the new RAM for myself.
I just recently bought a new Macbook Pro 17" Unibody. It currently has 4GBs of RAM and I would like to upgrade to 8GBs. Before, I had a Macbook Pro 15" ( Old version, 2008 Penryn Version ), and I currently have 6 GBs of RAM inside ( the max, 4 GB + 2 GB ) I also have another spare 2 GB chip and 2 1GB chips for my old Macbook Pro. Would these RAM chips work for my new one, or would I have to buy new RAM?

It worked well in the first few hours, but now, applications crash for no reason at all and it won't wake up after sleep, if i turn it off then on, I get a crash report massage for the OS, here is one that I just got :

I have an iMac Core Duo 2006 (the first intel mac). I want to upgrade the WiFi so that it will work with my time capsule (1st gen) 5ghz WiFi network.
I was looking and there appears to be 2 options
1. Airport Extreme Card Model MA688Z/B
2. Airport Extreme Card Model BCM94321MC
Which of these will work and which is best? At the same time I will also be upgrading the HDD to 640GB Samsung Spingpoint F1.

i just recently bought a powerbook g4 from my company firesale. it runs on os 10.2.8.
i would like to upgrade it to os 10.5, but the 512 RAM would make it a bit sluggish. so i am upgrading it to 10.4 instead.
problem is,... i hear people say that you have to have os 10.3 installed before 10.4. is that true?
i just want to buy a full 10.4 upgrade package and do it then and there.
I trying to help my Dad out. He has a Mac Pro with 2 x 2Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor. I know an upgrade is possible on this machine, but what I want to know is can I upgrade the machine with two 54XX series Intel Xeon Processors and make his Mac Pro a 8-Core Mac. Here are the ones I am looking into ordering for my Dad and installing:

Or we might getting one that is even faster, but still apart of the 54XX series.
Is there a tool or utility to check to see if adding 8GB of ram to my current 2GB ram will speed up my computer?
I currently have a 3 week old 8-core 2.8 mac pro. Before I had a G5 with 8GB ram and I could open up many of my RAW images from my camera at once without noticing an uber amount of lag time. I noticed once getting the new mac pro with 2GB ram it took longer to load up the images. Now I'd think it would use processor power more than the ram but I could be wrong. I always set photoshop to use the most amount of ram which is around 3GB plus I could run safari and dreamweaver, illustrator and some other apps all at once without wanting to toss my computer out the window for lag. (I have little patience btw)
So I was just talking with someone saying that if I add 8GB of ram its overkill for me to have 10GB ram. Though I also plan on running a virtual machine that will run a couple design apps that are windows only.. plus I use maya... but besides that. If it were 10GB or ram I have and its all to just run my browser, adobe design suite and maybe a couple chat clients it may be over kill but wouldn't I be right in saying that they would all run smooth all at once using 10GB of ram instead of 2? and yes I know its only 32 bit so each can only suck up 3GB ram. Just figured to me I could run many apps and have no issue with my computer with more ram. I found online 2 4GB sticks of ram and I plan on getting them this year so even though im buying them.. just wanted some input.
I have the Mac Pro dual core, 2.66GHz. It has the ATI 1900XL.
It's still running strong, however I've become addicted to more monitors and I'm planning on getting a second one however I've been screwed by the discontinuation of the 23" DVI version because that's what I have as a main monitor.
So my choices are 20" or 30" now, or the new one with some adapter that isn't shipping.
So I'd like to get a 30" I think, and put the 23" to the side instead. yes I know there are cheaper monitors but I'm looking for some commonality out there.
However I also have a 19" LCD 1280x1024 I use for 'junk' (non-photography) things like iCal, mail, etc. To hook that + the 23 + the 30 up can that be done without investing in another video card?
I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.5.7 via Software Update, and after that I cannot log in anymore! The system boots fine, I land on the log in screen. After entering the password, it seems to be logging in, I can see the dashboard and everything, and then it automatically logs out and jumps back to the log in screen!
I searched on Apple Support and found this -> [URL] changing the password in single user mode doesn't work either!
Hope you guys know what's going on and give me a hand! I tried to contact Apple Support but they said my AppleCare is expired.
I am making the conversion to Mac (Macbook Pro). I have legit software for a PC so I thought I would do the following if possible...
1) Install Windows XP 32 bit through boot camp and then upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit.
2) Install Office 2007 and then upgrade to 64 bit.
This would save me a lot of money...what are the opinions?
As stated in title I have this PPC Mini that I have upgraded to 1GB RAM, but is getting a little slow (running 10.5.8). Has anyone swapped the hard drive for a larger 320GB 5400 RPM model? Was the swap worth it? The unit is really only for my 10 year old to do basic tasks, but the laginess is becoming an issue.

First i have Microsoft Office 2011 installed, and if i just take out the HDD and install the new one and put MAC OSX on it how would i be able to transfer over my Microsoft Office so i don't lose it and have to buy it again.
Also, should i put in the new ram, let it load up and read the new ram, then install the hard drive, or do it the other way, or just do both at the same time?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been out of mac for quite a bit(1ghz g4 pb) and I have never owned a mac desktop, but recently I got a dual 533 DA powermac, and I've been looking for giving it a bit more of everything. So I grabbed 1.5gb of sd-133 and a evga 7800gs that I have flashed. I also picked up a dual 800mhz g4 from a QS, my question is, do I need to do the 12v 4th post mod due to the fact I'm already using a dual cpu? I was unsure as most of the posts I've found deal with adding a DP daughter card to single G4 macs. Also if that is the case does any one know of a good picture of the 12v mod , the one I found was very small and I couldn't quite see what he used to attach the 12v line to the post.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need some help getting some facts straight. I am considering upgrading from the 4870 to the 285. It's a fine idea except that the 285 is very expensive, but at least I could try and sell the 4870 and maybe get $300CAD for it. Then I thought, what about just getting a second 4870 and crossfiring them?
I have read through a good 3 or 4 threads on these forums about powering the second card, flashing PC cards and working with crossfire... that was a freaking long 3 hours of reading non-stop.
So I have these questions which I hope someone here can answer with reasonable certainty.
1) When doing crossfire, do the cards have to be very similar for them to work? If 1 card is 512 and the other 1GB will there be any advantage over just getting a card with 512?
2) If other cards of the same family work, would a crossfiring of the apple 4870 with a 4870X2 perform similar to 3 X 4870 in crossfire?
3) Could someone explain the cables and/or hardware needed to power the second card from the second optical drive slot? I think the best way to go is 1 cable from each card to the regular spot and 1 cable from each card going to the same connector in the optical bay.
4) Apparently 2 X apple 4870s don't work with crossfire. But does this apply to combining an apple 4870 with an unflashed PC 4870?
5) I thought I read about some attempts to modify the ROM of the apple card to enable crossfire with some success. Is that true and if so where is this ROM and does it negatively impact the apple 4870 in OSX?
6) If have read in the past (I think with the PC 3870s) that if you connect a second unflashed card to an apple card with the crossfire link that the card behaves in OSX (doesn't spin it's fans wildly). I don't need it to do anything in OSX except not blow up, I only care about it working in windows. I'd like to avoid flashing the PC card if I can.
I have the IMac with 4gb of ram. I want to upgrade to 8gb. I know that the imac use ddr3 but that's not enough. I need more info to be able to buy the same memory. It would be better if I know which brand and model. I want to buy the same memory to upgrade

I'm thinking about upgrading to 4GB anyway?
My current setup:
Early 2008 MacBook Pro
2.5 Ghz C2D
10.6.4 and Windows XP (Bootcamp/Parallels)
4GB RAM
I've read that I can bump my RAM up to 6GB (despite Apple's said 4GB limit) and with a current sale, I can get a 4GB module pretty cheap so I'm thinking "why not?". I'm planning on installing Windows 7 as well as playing more games on my laptop (my PS3 broke down on me). Would I realize any noticeable performance difference with the extra RAM in Windows 7 and/or OSX?
My wife and I are getting the maximum use out of our old iBook G4s. I even replaced my mother board last year.
I upgraded to 10.5.8 a couple of years ago and now I want to get my wife's iBook up to that as well. Other than my consicience what stops me from using the OS discs I used for my computer on hers? Who among you would pay $140 to upgrade a 10 year old lap top from one obsolete OS to the next higher obsolete OS?

I am upgrading my RAM to 4 gb. I have a mid-2007 Macbook that came with 2 1gb memory modules factory installed. My question is, will it expand to 3 or 4 gb? According to Wiki, the late-2007 Macbook came with 2 1gb installed, expandable to 4, but does not list a mid-2007 that was installed with 2 1g modules, just 1gb (512mb). Becasue of this, I am unsure what it will actually expand to.
