Software :: Text Encoding Nightmare?

Feb 19, 2009

I added some fonts to my mac because I'm a Student Graphic Designer and it seems to have knocked out the encoding on my web browser, I have tried everything, so as many suggestions as possible would be a God-send.

I though I fixed it at one point then I went on to Wikipedia and it just shows loads of completely random characters.

OS X :: 10.4.11 Safari / Finder Nightmare?

May 26, 2009

I have 2 new issues after upgrading to 10.4 from 10.3 - I just did a "Safari update" a few days ago...

1) Safari takes forever to load and says can't contact Spell Checker. Then works ok for a few minutes then stalls out about every 15-20 minutes.

2) When i start up, the Finder menu bar is as it always is BUT! when I start up Safari the menu changes as below starting with "Sleep"...

Sleep
Restart...
Restart
Shutdown...
Shutdown
Logout...
Logout

I know the one with periods will give me an option to cancel that particular action I have chosen but the ones without the periods are new and are one-step actions - why are they both showing up?

I have also tried upgrading to Safari Beta 4 and it seems to have helped the slow connection - at least so far.

I also downloaded MainMenu but don't know what tasks to perform.

I have attached a few screen shots so you can see what I mean about the "Black Outline" around selected objects and the Finder menu.

Software :: Graphics Nightmare On Leo?

Apr 7, 2008

I am not sure what's going on but I have been plagued by lines on the monitor for nearly a month now - I suspect as a result of applying the fix from the apple site for Leo. On top of this I am experiencing frequent lock ups and in particular poor performance with firefox. These lines appear randomly - sometimes on the desktop, sometimes in the active application like dirty great schatches of colour horizontally across the screen

I have a generation 1 Intel 24" iMac which I bought on the day it was launched. It is the acrylic one. I have since upgraded to Leo from Tiger and added the new keyboard (another mess as far as I am concerned - as a graphic designer I now need to use hotk eys to access the F keys as they have all been mapped to dashboard functions or similar. Wow! Great Shakes!!!) and although I had one or two problems initially they were not as bad as they are now. I had no graphics problems to speak of but applied this patch thinking it might somehow improve areas I wasn't aware of.... The opposite seems to be the case....

Can this be removed without wrecking my current install? I hope so as the least fuss to resolve the problem would be the most appealing solution.

Similarly can I wind back from Leo to Tiger without losing my files?

These are the most important things I feel for now but anyone else having the frequency of system lock ups and problems with firefox? I have recently upgraded my memory from 1Gb to 2Gb but seems to make no difference to performance at all.....

Applications :: ITunes And External Hard Drive Nightmare

Sep 25, 2009

First I am really sorry if this has been brought up a lot but I am seriousply stuck and have no idea what to do and I know this is Mac stuff but I thought it would be better then anywhere else. I have looked on Apple.com and nothing has been able to help. Well here it is I am having trouble trying to get my music from my external Hard Drive.

So my old laptop took a crap on me. I took it in and they told me it would cost more to fix it then to just by a whole new one so I did just that. Well before the company gave me back my old laptop they asked if I wanted all my files backed up onto a external Hard Drive that way I don't have to fuss with it later. So I went out that day and bought a "My Book" External Hard Drive. They did it and well now I am trying to get my iTunes music from that and there isn't any folders of music when I open up the iTunes folder all I have is

-Album Artwork (File Folder)
-Mobile Applications (File Folder)
-Previous iTunes Libraries (File Folder)
-iTunes Library (iTunes Database File
-iTunes Music Library (XML Document)

I have tried dragging them in (When I do that a "UB" is under the iTunes symbol) , I have tried adding File, Adding Folder and nothing happens... it shows nothing in there. Then when I click on them to open all it does is open iTunes and nothing happens. I have tried downloading a couple of programs to get the music off my iPod but they all said there is no iPod connected when it was. I have also tried to unistall iTunes and try and go into the iPod and see if I can get it that way and there wasn't anything in there beside the folders for contacts, photos etc. (Still nothing even in those folders) Please I don't know what else to do and I can't just go onto that old laptop and do an easy transfer since the motherboard went out on it. Is there any hope at all or am I stuck with an unusable iTunes and iPod?

Mac Pro :: Handbrake Encoding Slowdowns - Unresponsive

Oct 18, 2010

I ran into a bit of weirdness last night when converting a bunch of Xvid encoded AVI's over to H.264 m4v's using Handbrake. The reason I'm posting here is I think there might be an issue with the hard disk. To begin with, it ran (using 2-pass, turbo first pass) fine, up to finishing the turbo first pass, then it'd hang for about a minute, then carry on with the 2nd pass, running at around 300-400fps (not bad eh!). At around 40-50%, the hard disk starts sounding like it's performing a lot of tasks, even if nothing else is running. fps drops to around 100, then dips down to 30 or so and stays there. Entire system becomes slow / unresponsive. Seeing as the source files and destination for the output were on the same 2Tb drive (25% full), I wondered if perhaps this was too much for one drive to cope with (I'd previously been ripping videos / DVDs to an External drive, and never had this issue). I wiped an external drive, loaded the AVI's, and used it as a source drive, so all my main OS drive had to do was write the file, rather than both read and write at the same time. Same issue, but only for the first file. After this, the whole process ran smoothly. I'm not sure if the issue might have been that I was also copying different files as well as using handbrake, but despite stopping all other activities, this problem persisted, despite reboots, for a while.

Applications :: How To Preserve A DVD Menu While Encoding

Oct 24, 2010

I'm ripping my movie collection so i can access it on my iDevices as well as my apple tv. I'm using ripit to rip it to my mac. Then using handbrake to encode te movie to be compatible with my devices.Everything works great except after I encode the movie I lose the DVD menu. When I play the encoded file the movie starts right away. How can I preserve the DVD menu after encoding e ripped file? The DVD menu is preserved from then ripped file, it only drops after I encode it. I'm assuming handbrake won't or can't keep the DVD menu.Is there a way to preserve the DVD menu with handbrake or another application on the mac? MacBook Pro :: Handbrake And I5 - Ripping / Encoding?

when running handbrake it maxes out the cpu in my sig and uses over 300% of the processor. I'm interested in the CPU usage and speed of ripping compared to the faster i5's and I'd like to see how the i7's compare as well. I don't think the speed of the hard drive really comes into play but I have the stock 5400rpm drive. Do people with SSD's notice any difference in ripping/encoding? QuickTime :: Won't Play M4V Or MP4 - Encoding Wrong?

Jun 18, 2012

Basically I've just used a reliable, tested program to rip a DVD of an old VHS recording my cousin gave me. The intention is to cut out the bit he was in and make it available to him as a digital video. The problem I'm having is that for some reason Quicktime and Final Cut are refusing to recognise either the mv4 encoded rip or the mp4 one. The program has always worked before so I doubt it's encoding it wrong and I've got reems of other m4vs and mp4s that play fine in Quicktime X and 7. It's just this one video that seems to be an issue.

I have Kigo Video Converter which is also reliable and much tested and tried converting the mp4 to an avi to see if QT or FC would handle that. All it does is freeze the program, something that has never happened before. I've honestly never had this much trouble converting home-made DVD burns into digital videos, I've done it many times before myself using numerous methods. I'm also well-versed in digital video formats and encoding and I can't find anything technically wrong with it.

Software :: Toast Titanium Encoding AVI Files?

How Toast Titanium lets me put a 4.37GB DVD-R in my powerbook G4, then lets me drag like 20 AVI files into the Toast screen, then when I press record it starts encoding and takes forever to encode each one, and then when it's all finished after about 12 hours of encoding... THEN is when it chooses to tell me:

"Not enough space on the DVD-R"and aborts the whole burning process. What in the HELL. Is there any way to have Toast tell you how many AVIs you can put on one DVD-R BEFORE encoding them?

OS X :: Roxio Toast 9 Incredibly Slow At Encoding.

Feb 22, 2009

I've been using various versions of Roxio Toast for a while now. I've recently purchased version 9 but I've had the same issue with previous versions of Toast as I have with version 9...it's only through total frustration though that I've created this topic!

Whenever I want to create a DVD from, say an AVI file, to watch on a conventional DVD player, Toast seems to take forever; for example, when I use Nero (even through Windows XP via VMWare Fusion, not to mention via Boot Camp), Toast takes, on average, about fours times as long as Nero does - and that's being generous! I realise that I'm only encoding through Nero doing a single pass encoding process (through choice) but surely, Roxio Toast 9 shouldn't really be this slow?

I'd be interested to know if this is the same for all Toast 9 users or is it just me? Is this a problem with my Mac (or installation Mac OS X) itself?

Intel Mac :: Printed Text Doesn't Match Size Of Onscreen Text

Jul 2, 2012

Mac screen resolution is getting higher and higher, which is nice, but the downside is that we seem to have lost "what you see is what you get." I have set the default document size of Text-Edit to about the size of an 8 1/2 x 11 document, which fits easily on the screen. I have what appears to be a single page of text. It all easily fits in the document window. The headline fits across the width of the page. But when I choose Print, the print preview shows that the text is going to spill out onto two sheets of paper.  I exit out of the print document and reduce the text size so that it all prints out on one sheet of paper. The problem is, the size of the text onscreen is now TINY! It looks like it's about 6 point while the printed text looks like it's about 12 point! No WYSIWYG!  When I revert the document to the way it was originally, where it was going to print out on two sheets of paper, and then hold my printed document up next to the screen, the printed size matches the onscreen size almost perfectly, even though, if printed out at this size, the text would spill out onto two pages and be huge. In other words, 18 point size text prints out at about 12 points and 12 pt text prints out at about 6pts, so there's about a 6pt difference in how text looks onscreen and how it prints out. Again, No WYSIWYG! My older Macs had much lower-resolution screens, but text printed out at about the same apparent size on screen. I know the original Macs had 72dpi screens so that they would closely match the printed size of text, and I like the fact that monitors keep getting better, but is there a way around this problem of printed text not matching the size of onscreen text?
