I have Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) installed on my MacBook Pro 3,1 as well as Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Is there a way to set the startup disk as the Ubuntu partition (ext3) so that I don't have to hold option or use rEFIt?
View 3 RepliesGot my first MacBook Pro about 2 months ago and I have been enjoying it to full effect, installing programs such as logic studio and photoshop cs5 on it. Recently, however, I decided that I would like to access some of my windows based programs when I am on the road and don't have my desktop pc with me. So I bought a fresh copy of 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and sat at my macbook, put the disc in and then loaded up Boot Camp. I went through the menu options, decided that I wanted a 50GB partition, leaving my Mac OS drive at 182 GB with 83GB to spare. However, when I started partitioning, after about a minute it stopped and this error message appeared: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.".
I tried cleaning all my temporary files and deleting some files in my downloads that were quite large and I restarted my machine. The problem persisted. Is there a solution to this problem that does not involve doing all this rubbish with a fresh install of Mac OS? I don't have any method of backup apart from a couple of 4GB flash drives..
I just got a 2nd caviar black 1tb and I'm goin to be setting up raid with another drive.. I have data on my current 1tb which is backed up with time machine. what do I have to do to get the drives workin in raid? I'm lookin to have a faster write speed since I need the raid setup. Since I will be using the 2 drives for my data and a photoshop scratch disk, should I create a partition for the scratch disk? I've seen some say yes.. Some that said no but without reason.What r the pros/cons to partitionin the drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedNot quite sure what happened, but somehow part of my OS X partition became corrupted and is no longer recognized as a startup disk. I ran techtool pro and tried to repair the volume from there without luck, then ran a Leopard install DVD and ran disk utility's repair disk twice (first time came back with an error, second it was able to complete and fix all issues). Where I'm currently at. I am able to view all of my files via Macdrive and my Bootcamp XP partition without issue and am currently backing up any files I hadn't previously backed up. My question is, will I have to do a full reinstall of OS X or is it possible to somehow activate the drive as a startup disk or diagnose where the problem lies and address it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI partitioned windows XP onto my Mac HD a few days ago. It worked beautifully until last night. Whenever I booted to it, it stuck at the welcome screen for 10 minutes, and was really buggy upon startup. This morning, my MacBook Pro (bought in August '09) upon turning on automatically boots to windows XP. No amount of holding "c" or "Alt" will bring up rEFIt or boot camp selection pane. And the kicker is, the windows XP partition is completely corrupted.
Here's what happens now:
1) Turn Macbook Pro on, hold down "c" or "Alt"
2) White background for ~ten minutes, nothing happens
3) After a long time, boots to black screen and says "Startup Disk Error... Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
I'm pretty sure its trying to boot to Windows XP partition, because Ctrl+Alt+Del is not a Mac OS X command... But I can't boot to my Mac OS X partition.

I had my hard drive partitioned via bootcamp to run windows vista. I use software at work that isn't supported by Mac (it is now, but our version is old and it costs 10k to upgrade yada yada yada). One night I was playing around with the time machine feature (had the macbook for three years now never touched it, wish i hadn't) and accidentally told the time machine to use the partition made by bootcamp for windows to back up my mac. Well this messed everything up. Now that partition is gone (windows) and that volume is now called time machine backups. I have used some threads in here to try and remove that and nothing seems to work (most of the threads are from 2007 to 2008).
What I need help with is removing that time machine volume so that I can run bootcamp again to reinstall windows. When I attempt to run bootcamp right now it says "This startup disk is not supported." When I restart and hold option only the mac hd is available to choose. I also use(d) VMware Fusion to run Windows.
ever since i upgraded to sl my boot camp partition cant be booted from. how do i make the partition bootable again. its windows 7 btw
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.04 onto a small 10GB partition that I quickly made in Disk Utility (resized my HFS+ partition while leaving my Windows 7 one intact). Upon reboot, I hold Option, and it only shows the 2 partitions (OS X & Windows). I was hoping it would show the Ubuntu partition. Since it doesn't, I have to use the Windows 7 bootloader to boot into Ubuntu. So, is there a way to edit my MacBook's bootloader to show all 3 partitions?

I wanted to see if I could install Ubuntu v8.10 on a partition and go dual boot with it. I only used a 5 gb partition. Now when I start up t goes right to Ubuntu. I have been hitting the C button to change back to OSX. My Question is, Did I screw up and not install it right? Can I go back to default settings? Is it just a button i am missing to go back to OSX? I would love to go back to OSX. I just wanted it as a dual boot.

When I go to Boot Camp Assistant, I try to click 'Continue' but it gives me this: I thought I could fix the problem using Disk Utility, but I couldn't understand what I could do. I thought it would work by erasing them, but I may have made the problem worse. Here is what it looks like: I tried booting the Ubuntu disc as I read I could remove the partition using that, but I don't understand how that would work.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 2.33ghz intel Macbook Pro from 2006, version 2.2 I believe, formally running snow leopard. So yesterday my HD crashed, so I am attempting to use a Ubuntu Live Cd (I also have Knoppix too) to just see the HD and attempt to pull a few key files off the drive. The problem I'm having is that I put in the CD/DVD (I've tried both the Ubuntu CD and the DVD one found here, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/, and Knoppix 6.2.1 CD)
Boot, Immediately press "C" or "Option/Alt", and it does NOT see a CD/DVD.
I tried inserting the snow leopard disk, and it will "see" that, (I am able to use disk utiltiy ect, off the disk), so I know that the DVD drive is working, and that I am at least doing the process of getting the computer to boot of a CD/DVD correctly.
However when ever I put any of the ISO burnt CD/DVD operating systems I have tried it doesnt "see" anything.
(I have tried a knoppix 6.3.1 CD, burnt off a windows machine, a Ubuntu live CD, burnt off a windows machine, and the same Ubuntu live CD, burnt off a mac, and now I'm downloading a Ubuntu Live DVD, and will burn it on a windows machine)
So my question is does anyone have any idea why its not recognizing any of these ISO burnt CD/DVD operating systems?
First some background info. I recently purchased a 1TB hard drive for my 13" MBP, and I am about to do a clean install of OSX 10.6 and Win7 64bit on separate partitions.
And I want to setup the partitions before I install using Disk Utility. The reason for this is because I'm under the assumption that when creating a NTFS partition its better for the disk to be blank so it can put the MFT(Master file table) and MFT Mirror wherever it wants instead of some random spot on the disk (that way disk writes will be faster). The MFT thing was true when converting a FAT32 disk to NTFS. Nativity formatted NTFS disks were always faster then ones converted from FAT32, because the MFT was spread out instead of at the start of the disk.
I'm worried that installing OSX and then using the bootcamp utility will cause the MFT on my NTFS partition to end up in a un-optimal place and disk Reads/Writes will be slower.
Ok, so here's my questions.
1.) Should I be using a GUID Partition Table or Master Boot Record(Remember OSX 10.6 and Win7)?
2.) Should I use Disk Utility to Create a the OSX partition and then leave the second partition as Free Space? / Or should I use a third party utility and make the OSX partition and the NTFS partition at the same time?
3.) If I do create the partitions Manualy, will bootcamp still work correctly?
4.) Should I Use Journaled or Case-Sensitive Journaled on my OSX partition?
I know all of the questions were stupid, but there isn't any info on the web about it.
I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
My new Hex Mac Pro is arriving on Sept 21 (ordered it on the 17th and shipped out within 3 hours!). My problem is how to setup my new Mac pro. My current set up is as follows
1. System Disk-with data on it.
2. Photos
3. Music
4. Partitioned disk-used for backup and the 2nd partition contains Windows 7 using Bootcamp.
With my new Mac pro I will be using an SSD installed in my optical Bay and will have 4 2tb hard drives. On the SSD I only want to have OSX and my applications with the data on another disk. My questions are:
1. What is the best way to transfer my present system disk to my new SSD without transferring the data?
2. What is the best way to transfer the other drives to the new drives?
3. Is there a way to connect both machines and transfer it that way, using Carbon Copy Cloner or some other method?
4. Will I be able to transfer Window 7/bootcamp through this method?
5. Am I better off just biting the bullet and reinstalling all apps and making a new partition and reinstalling Windows7/Bootcamp?
Sorry for the length of this thread but I am trying to avoid spending a week setting up my new Mac Pro. I appreciate any thoughts and strategy you might have.
Anyone knows why my external HD (USB disk connected to Airport extreme) does not show up in disk utility? (It sits on my desktop just fine and is fully functional) I' want to erase a partition but now i don't know how.

It tells me there are minor issues that need fixing up and I should run the repair disk function, by booting using Command-R and using the Disk Utility to repair the drive.Problem is, when I boot using Command-R and select Disk Utility the partition is shown greyed out and the Verify and Repair options do not work.I think this could be because the partition is encrypted. The utility does not offer me the chance to unlock the partition with my passphrase.How can I repair the filesystem errors on this partition?

My new 2010 hexacore Mac will have 24G memory, an OWC Extreme Pro 120G SSD (positioned in the lower optical bay) and four 2TB WD RE4 drives. I'll use my old Synology 209 NAS (two 1TB WD Green Raid 1 drives) for TM backups over 1000Mbps Ethernet. Yes, I'll need to upgrade to a larger NAS very soon. This will be my first Mac Pro (have MBPs and iMac) and will be used for web design and development (mostly Adobe CS5 products).
The SSD will be used for boot and application files. I plan to use Disk Utility to create a 1+0 Raid array for data files. For a Scratch disk, should I:
1) create a partition on the 1+0 Raid Array for Scratch
2) partition a chunk of the SSD for Scratch
3) attach a spare external 2.5" WD drive via Firewire 800 for Scratch
Based on my reading, it seems that option 1 makes the most sense but I'm not entirely sure if you can partition a 1+0 array with Disk Utility. I'm pretty sure option 3 is quite silly but wanted to toss out the idea. Lastly, are there any generic recommendations on scratch volume sizing?
I have a 640GB external USB hard drive that I use for time machine currently. I would like to go in and add a partition to load movies to and plug it into my PS3. Can I use disk utility to create a new partition without erasing the stuff already on the disk?
And then is it possible to format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT?
Yesterday I switched on my macbook (Leopard) and got the flashing question mark. Ran all the resets and booted with disk utility which encountered an 'Invalid B-tree Node' when attempting to repair the disk. Additionally, the SMART status was verified.
I ran DW 4 last night, and performed the hardware tests which reported that the disk was operating like normal. The majority of my media files and additional work is backed up to my Time Capsule but I still have a folder of papers that are relatively new, and wanted to retrieve. While DW managed to reconstruct the majority of my drive (there seemed to be 15g missing - but it's just music files) including this folder, it couldn't replace the disk, as it encountered 'Serious Disk Malfunctions'.
So, via the Disk Preview I want to transfer my saved folders to my TC, but I don't appear to be able to locate it (via ethernet) through DW - even if it's connected when I boot up in DW. So, first request is: Can I connect to my TC to transfer across in DW's preview?
Second is: What are my options if DW can't replace? Do I need to take it into Apple and get a new HD (it's out of warranty)? It's possibly worth noting that I'm a student and have absolutely no money - so cost effective options are a bonus!
I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

I restarted from the OS X Mac Mini install CD (holding down the letter C when I heard the chime), opened Disk Utility from the Utilities folder, selected my hard drive image, but the "verify disk" and "repair disk" options are grayed out. I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.

I have 2 internal Serial-ATA disks:
Both were checked (with Disk Utility and DiskWarrior) and are OK. But only one of the two disks shows in the Startup Disk list in System Preferences->Startup Disk.

Every time I try to restart my computer on my Hard Drive I get this message "Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk". As of right now I am running my whole computer off of a 16GB flash drive that is quickly running out of memory. How do I fix my Hard Drive without losing all 150GB worth of data. I am running off of OS X 10.6.8 and have another iMac that is working fine.
