Software :: Quicktime And VLC Won't Play Back H264 Encoded Video
Apr 4, 2008
I have an iMac G5. Running Leopard 10.5.2. It's working just swimmingly... except that it won't play back h264 video. I have the latest versions of both Quicktime and VLC. Each app handles the video files differently. Quicktime will give me this message: "The movie could not be opened. An invalid sample description was found in the movie." VLC will play the audio, but not the video. My computer can handle HD playback just fine (I watch most of my movies in 720p AVI files,) so that can't be the problem. This is just driving me insane. Does anyone have a solution for me?

I have recorded a lot of videos with my Samsung HD video cam. I chose 1280x720 H.264 as video format. When I want to watch the videos on my mac (Snow Leopard, Quicktime Player 10) the height of the videos is too low. According to Quicktime the format is H.264, 1280 x 720 , 16.7m colors with 50 fps, but the current size is 1388 x 440 pixels. How can I watch my videos with the real size of 1280 x 720 pixels? Up to now I need another video player, e.g. VLC.

On the old version of quicktime there was a option in the preferences to start the video playing straight away
In this new version on snow leopard, when you double click a video, quicktime loads it but you still need to press play.
I can't see a option anywhere to make it play vids straight away.

Can I organize the Quicktime player like the old version? With the play buttons / time line on the bottom, outside and away from the video?
E.g., I do not want the play buttons / time line to "float" over the video window. It's distracting for times when I need to pause and scroll over video to find certain spots. It is really in the way.

I just finished exporting a movie from FCPX as a .mov. From there, I shared it with iTunes. I've tried sharing it with iTunes 3 times and each time when it finishes, the movie won't play. It's just a black screen with no audio. The timeline moves but no video. I've done this many times before and all of my other videos play fine. This video is about an hour and a half and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. All of my other videos I've shared with iTunes, that play fine, are shorter. The longest is 25 minutes.

I am a new Mac user, and I bought a mac for the main purpose of video editing. However, all my files are MPEG2, and so far, I have had a very frustrating experience with trying to figure out how to play it back on Quicktime with Audio. I downloaded Pro, as well as the MPEG2 add on. It plays video fine, but can someone please tell me how to get it to play audio step by step?
Lastly, I have Final Cut and iTunes and audio won't play with the video there either. I am assuming once I have it fixed in quicktime, it will work in all other programs too?

When I go to tag a movie encoded with 0.9.4 x86_64 with any program it does not work. For a while MetaX would corrupt the file. Through searching I found that if I checked the 'Large file size 64bit' check box it would play the video, but no audio. If I open the .m4v file in VLC everything works fine, audio and video. I tried Vindalin (or whatever) and iFlicks with the same results. Actually when I ran the script with iFlicks it didn't add the album art of anything in iTunes, but same story...video, but no audio. 95% of the movies I have are encoded with Handbrake and from what I have searched this seems to be the common link.

When I try to play a video in the web browser, the video won't load. It stays blank and sound plays ok.After posting this here, I was told to erase my quicktime preferences file. It works and the problem is solved - but only temporarily. Minutes later, it happens again. I'm sick of erasing this file all the time. What can I do?!

I'm running 10.7.3 Server to host a Wiki with a local business. Everything is running great except for one thing. Embedded media.
Whenever we attach video files or keynote media, it will play back on the machine we posted it from but once anyone else pulls up the content on their machine it will show a media playback bar but will not play back. We've tried .mov, .m4v, .mp4 etc. and it will never play back.

I have several HD videos from my Sony NEX-3 camera that will not play very well from within iMovie. They freeze up, or run in slow motion while the sound track continues without any problem. I've seen other related comments on this forum, but no one has suggested a fix yet. I can play my clips just fine from the finder menu using "Quick Look". Other videos from the same camera work, what has changed?

I have had this problem quite a while now:When I open an .avi file it automatically opens using QuickTime. I'd like that because it's the best player for Apple. The problem is however that I can only hear the sound, there's no image/video.I use 10.7.2. (now updating to 10.7.3), but it already did this before I had OSX Lion installed. If I search for new updates it doesn't come up with an update for QuickTime.Any other player works (although VLC's the only one I tried so far).

I have a bunch of videos that I need to convert for internet streaming. Opening them in QT Pro shows that they are .MP4 videos with a video codec of AVC Coding. WHen I tried converting them straight to .MOV H264 I got nothing, but I just tried .AVI and everything was good.
Does anyone have any codecs/applications for converting from AVC to H264 in one swoop?

After I installed 10.6.1, my 17" uMBP doesn't play 1080p quicktime trailers if I use the 9400M chip. They play at really bad fps with QuicktimeX player. I use VLC to play them and they play as good as usual. So the 10.6.1 somehow broke the hardware acceleration part of 9400M for me. QuicktimeX player tries to accelerate the playback by hardware, which doesn't work, so it can't play them. VLC does it by CPU and it works.
I didn't have this issue with 10.6.
Anyone else with uMBP can test this out?
P.S. If I use the 9600 GT, they play nicely on QuicktimeX player as well as before.

I've moved everything from my PC to Mac with no problem....docs, photos, music, movies, etc. However, there are about a half dozen .MOV files that simply won't open. The message I receive is "The document “filename.MOV” could not be opened. The decoder required for this media cannot be found."
I took a look at other video files I brought over from my PC and there are quite a few .MOV files that are playing just fine. why some .MOV videos are playing just fine while others aren't? And more importantly, what do I need to do in order to get these videos to play?
I'm using Mac OS X, Version 10.7.4 and QT, Version 10.1.

I've got a 1.25GHz G4 iMac with 1.5 GB of ram running on Leopard and I'm also an avid anime addict. Lately, more and more anime are being encoded in H264 and my iMac just can't handle it anymore. In some cases, I get sound but no video (processing power is enough for sound, but just not enough juice for the H264 decoding) and the sound plays with no stutter/lag. However, in other cases, everything is laggy.
Either way, is there no way around this? It's not my main system, and I can accept the fact that it's an outdated system, but I've been able to do most things I usually do with it without problems. I'll never get rid of this baby, so I would like to know if anything can be done to stretch it's potential
"you can donate it to [fill in your name here]" because the answer is "no", or "upgrade to something more recent" because the answer is "I already have something more recent".

When I open one of the files a dialog box comes up that says, "Additional software is required for quicktime to playback this media" with a link to the quicktime components page.
If I just play the file anyway the sound is all garbled and there's no video at all, it just stays black. Also, the same exact thing happens with realplayer. does this mean there's a problem with the files or something?
