Software :: Moving From G5 PPC To New Mac Pro?

Aug 12, 2008

I have been using a Mac PPC G5 since 2004 or so. I am running Leopard 10.xx on this PPC. Due to requirements in software (seems more new software is for Intel version only) I have decided to break down and get a new Intel Mac Pro (dual 2.8, etc).

I have 2 G-Tech external firewire drives, and 1 internal SATA, and 1 external SATA to Firewire drive. All these drives are formatted as Extended, non-journaling (only 1 partition on each). Will the new mac read these drives without issue? I plan to place the external SATA/Firewire (It is in an ICY Dock) in to one of the spare bays in the new system. This drives carry the bulk of my data.

I have many applications, iPhoto 6, iMovie 6, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, and a few others. I plan to re-install all these apps on the new machine. I might try to copy my pref files for final cut and soundtrack to the new system.

I would also like to copy all the data under my user name on the "Macintosh HD" to the same username on the new mac. I plan to have the same user names on the new system.

I am trying to cover all the pitfalls in moving from my old system to the new one. I have seen postings recommending not using the setup assistant or the migration assistant to accomplish these tasks, and I do not mind reloading the apps, too much, particularly if it is safer!

OS X :: Moving Data From Mac To PC

Jan 21, 2006

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X. I'm trying to transfer a very large chunk of data (roughly 40 gigs or so) from my Mac to my PC (I need to sell my Mac, so I'm trying to empty it). Fortunately, most of the files can be read by both platforms, so I don't need to convert any data, just move it. Any suggestions on how this could be done? I've thought of burning everything on to DVDs and moving them that way, but I'm wondering if there's another way.

OS X :: Moving ITunes From Mac To PC

I just bought a new gaming rig to replace my Macbook as my primary computer. It will be running Windows 7 and I was wondering if anybody has any experience or even a tutorial for moving my iTunes library on my Mac over to the PC. All the tutorials I found only work for moving from PC to Mac or for much older versions of iTunes (9 being the current one)

OS X :: Moving Picasa From PC To Mac?

moving entire Picasa library from PC to Mac? With ALBUMS and FACE TAGS? I tried backup to ext. hdd but that didn't work. Picasa on Mac restores folders with Windows paths -> useless. Then I tried moving only folders and rescan them again, but I lost all album and faces -> useless. Finally I tried coping folders and Picasa data from user/appdata/local folder to Mac Picasa library folder.

OS X :: Moving Folders From One Mac To Another?

Oct 15, 2010

me and my lass are having difficulties moving folders from her old G4 to a new IMAC. photos saved in i photo we can simply put onto the camera sd card and then transfer but as I broke the cd burner on the G4 which I am constantly being reminded of at the moment How do you move folders from one mac to another as they contain pohotos our lass has had for a few years now.

I have no knowledge of computers as it took me two days to find the button to open the CD draw on my own new computer so any answers would need to be simplistic. I think you can just put them on a memory stick or load them onto the SD card of the camera. But how?

And considering I broke the burner on the other MAC our lass isnt that keen on me touching these folders as she doesnt want to lose the phtos.

I've ordered my first Mac: MBA.

I am currently using a Windows 7 machine with the latest iTunes build.

My iTunes library is located and synced to the cloud with Dropbox. I also sync my iPhone with this iTunes library, this will be essential with both computers.

Now, when I get my MBA, I plan to first do a complete reinstallation, removing unrequired software and drivers as well as eradicate unused languages.

I then plan to setup iTunes.

OS X :: Moving HDD From 2nd To 5th Generation?

Jun 3, 2009

I have a 2nd gen MB and recently got a 5th gen MB (white) with NVidia adapter. I moved my HDD from 2nd gen to 5th hoping all would be fine. Although system seems to work fine, I have problems on boot (command line text appears). I made HDD verification with DU, all seems to be fine. There are many problems with Disk Permissions and they can not be somehow repaired.

What would you suggest to move my HDD in the best way? Shall I try to solve boot problem? Or shall I just format the HDD on 5th and restore the system with Time Machine or sth?

OS X :: Moving Files From Os 8 To 10.4.11?

Apr 16, 2010

My grand father is the king of all pack rats as he still keeps all his taxes and personal files on a powermac 600/66.

He wants to move the files off that computer and onto one of his newer macs so that the older powermac can finally be laid to rest.

The power Mac has a floppy drive which I am hopping I can use in tandem with a USB floppy drive for one of his newer macs so that no data is lost.

It seems like a viable plan I just want to know what issues I might run into as he is convinced the only way to transfer the documents will be via printer to scanner.

Hardware :: Moving To A New Mac

Dec 8, 2007

Currently I use a 12" PowerBook G4, and am planning to upgrade to a black MacBook with 2 gigs of ram and 160 Gig HD. (Or, maybe the white with 2 gigs of ram and 120 gig HD. Still deciding)

Anyway, I want to know first of all what people think of this upgrade timing.

Second of all I want to know what I need to do in order to comfortably tansfer my software settings.

For example, it would be great if I didn't have to reconfigure Terminal.app to the font style and transparency and whatnot that I like. Not to mention big things like Firefox bookmarks (or maybe I'll be switching to Safari!), my Mail.app settings, and other things.

There's a lot of stuff I'm sure. Is there one particular folder I could just backup that has all of these things in it... That would be nice.

Applications :: Moving One Program To Another Mac?

Sep 7, 2010

Firstly, I'm a hardcore Mac fan and think that Time Machine was great idea. I know it does complete backup, including software and applications. My question is what is preventing the user from installing a time machine restore of another mac on a new one thus giving the new mac the same expensive software for free?

Example: I got a refurbished 2009 i7 iMac and would like to have Photoshop on my iMac too, it currently resides on my MBP. Could I simply do a time machine back up from my MBP to my iMac and get the application pro bono? Just used Migration Assistant and it worked flawlessly! Much better than using time machine.

OS X :: Moving .app Files Around After Installation?

Sep 23, 2010

I like to keep my Applications directory tidy, so I have my software in several sub directories. I haven't had any problem moving the .app files around until I installed Virtual Box. It installs under Applications without asking anything, and if I just plain move the .app file somewhere else, the program doesn't run.

So, coming from Linux, my first instinct when a sw doesn't work from it's GUI launchers is to try run it from command line to see any potential error messages, and sure enough:

Code: sakus@MBP13 /Applications/Utilities/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS $ ./VirtualBox

VirtualBox: supR3HardenedVerifyDir: Failed to open "/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS": No such file or directory (2)

So my question is - as I'm still not too familiar with these .app bundles - based on that error message, which file should I look for to try and edit the hard coded directory paths ?

MacBook Pro :: Moving My Data Onto New?

Dec 20, 2010

I currently have a 2006 white macbook that I have backed everything up onto an external HD with Time Machine. I have bought one of the new 13" Macbook Pros, but I can't just plug the external HD in and import everything, as the Pro has CS5 and the new Microsoft Office on it which I don't want to lose.

So I'm wondering, how can I get everything from my macbook onto my macbook pro, without losing CS5 and Office 2011.

Also, I've just realised, my macbook currently has Office 2008 on it, so I don't want to transfer that over in case it covers the newer copy of Office on the Pro.

MacBook :: Moving Over Old Files?

Feb 1, 2009

I am thinking of buying a new MacBook (Pro). I currently back up using Time Machine and wondered when restoring when I first turn on the Mac, do I have to restore EVERYTHING or can I select what I want? Such as music and photos.

Also, does the 7200RPM hard drive in the pro create lots of noise and heat compared to the 5400RPM version? If I bought a 7200 RPM model and put it in a MacBook (Apple don't let you do this yet) would it be safe? Which models do Apple use?

Is the Pro big when carrying to school? Portability basically?

Some of you might have seen my previous posts, but judging by what I will use the laptop for, do you recommend 2.4, 4GB MacBook or the stock 2.5 Pro with upgraded hard drive?...

1. I use light bits of Photoshop CS3 Extended for school that work well on my original 2.0 Core Duo MacBook.

2. Light video editing, such as iMovie, maybe Final Cut.

3. Most importantly, music creation. I'm only a beginner on all of this, and the laptop should last me about 3 years at the least. Everybody I have spoken to about the missing FireWire on the MacBook - including people at apple - has advised me that the gap between USB and FireWire is pretty half and half. As a beginner, recording voice, guitar, keyboard, maybe drums... will the lack of FireWire be too much of a problem?

OS X :: Moving My MS HTFS Files?

Apr 21, 2009

Well I did it! I bought us a MBP and very much looking forward to more of an enjoyable way of life. We should be getting our system in a few days. In the interim, I have been converting all music to AAC format and copying them onto a HTFS formatted external drive. I read on MacRumors that OSX cannot write to the MS formatted disk. I only want to read (copy) the files onto my internal disk and reformat the USB disk to OSX supported format.

Is this possible or do I need to format the USB disk to FAT32 and do the whole thing again?

OS X :: Why Is The SL Dock Moving My Icons

Sep 24, 2009

and how do I stop it?

At first I thought I was seeing things so to be sure I purposely moved some app icons to the far left and low and behold about 30 or so minutes later it moved them almost all the way to the right.

I checked the dock settings and there doesn't seem to be a setting for this. I did a search on the forum already couldn't find anything. This is nothing TOO major but perhaps if I understood why it's doing it I might be willing to accept it.
