Software :: Mac Keeps Crashing / Stalling - Screen Unresponsive
May 11, 2010
I have been having some crashes lately on my mac and finally I got a crash report. I do not understand any of this but all I do is leave my mac on when I go to sleep and when I get back the screens are unresponsive to wake-up/sleep. Here is the report:

I have been experiencing some unusual problems with my imac. While on the internet today my computer crashed on me twice, the first time the screen just showed a bunch of vertical lines, the second it flashed some random colors then went black. After the screen change the computer was unresponsive. I have a bad feeling, is it due to overheating, a bad logic board or something else. This is the first time I have ever experienced this on a mac. Has anyone had any simiar issues? Or am I up **** creek? I can't really afford a new computer seeing that I just bought an iPad (it comes Saturday). I am not sure if my computer is still under apple care and even if it was I won't get it back by the time I have to go back to college. I attached a screen shot of my computer temps.

After downloading the latest Mavericks software on my MacBook Air, the process asked my to open my account. I could not remember my password and as instructed, requested to change it. Off it went, with the little wheel turning madly and 5 days later it continues to do so, with me unable to turn the computer off or in any way restart it. It's stuck in the on position, with the wheel madly turning around and around.Â
It says to exit windows but I can't get at it because the screen is unresponsive.Â

I have a MacBook Pro from December 2007. Currently, when I push the power button to start it up, it makes the initial sound (although sometimes this initial sound is abbreviated, like it's cut off mid sound) but it never sounds the follow-up majestic-type chime. Also, the screen remains black, and the keyboard is unresponsive (The Caps doesn't light up, for instance). The light on the front comes on faintly, but does not blink as in sleep mode. And the fan comes on as well, again faintly, not as in overdrive.
And I'm assuming this next part is coincidental but I'll relay it anyway: The first hiccup with this was yesterday when, in sleep mode, I pushed the front release button to open the MCP and then immediately afterward accidentally closed it again. Upon opening it for the second time the screen remained black. I manually shut it down holding the power button. After two or three times of turning it on and off manually, the majestic chime thing finally sounded and it booted properly. It worked fine then throughout the rest of the day when I would come back to it until last night when it failed again.

I just bought a macbook pro, and I installed bootcamp and had everything running perfectly. I installed the drivers, and then I let windows 7 update while I went to sleep, when I woke up the macbook was turned off, then I tried to turn it on, and it sounded like it was about to boot up, but the screen is blank there is no cursor, it looks like it's not even on, and I think the keyboard is unresponsive because when I press caplocks it doesn't light up.

I got a 3 year old white macbook. I was surfing the net when suddenly it turned off. On restart, I got the grey screen for a while, the a picture of a file with a question mark in it, waited for ten minutes, still the file. I have done the following:
1.- Reset the PRAM: I use the combination of keys, and it reboots, but on rebboting it goes back to the picture of the file.
2.- Use the option key on startup: I get a grey screen with the curso on it, which I can move with my mouse, but no buttons to click or nothing.
3.- Use the X key: as if doing nothing
4.- Resseting the SMC: as if doing nothing

LaTeXit has stopped working on my OS X for an unknown reason. I don't know if it was caused by recent software updates or something else, but I tried to run LaTeXiT and the icon would pop up on the dock and eventually stop bouncing, but it wouldn't run (no highlighted dot beneath the icon). The program was working fine as recently as a month ago, and I haven't changed my system since then.(I may have upgraded to MacTex 2008 during this time, but even when I set my TeX distribution back to MacTex 2007 I am unable to launch LaTeXiT.) 7200rpm SATA disk (custom config when ordered uMBP) keeps stalling (beach ball) every so often. I used Disk Utility on my uMBP and it was corrupted so I repaired it and my system still hangs every 15-20 minutes. It does this no matter if I'm launching an app or just doing nothing. So I formatted my drive and reinstalled OSX Snow Leopard. It seemed fine but now it's doing it again. Using Disk Utility shows nothing wrong with the drive this time. I'm still under warranty but I don't want the downtime of taking this in.

I have an early-2012 13" i7 Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.3. In the past couple of days, I have noticed that the computer stalls on the grey Apple screen with the spinning wheel after a soft shut down/reboot. If I do a hard restart while it has stalled like this, it then proceeds to boot up normally.

At first I thought it was a Quark problem. When doing a mundane action such as changing a word to Italic, Quark 7.5 stalls (pretty color spinning wheel comes up and won't go away) it has to be forced to quit. Now, the same thing happened in Acrobat 7, when I was just moving across the top menu bar to drop down the tools menu. I am running MAC 0S X 10.5 on a MAC Book Pro3 - 2.4 ghz. I've run maintenance and everything looks fine.

I'm running a virus/addware/etc. Scan on my Macbook, with Norton (yes I know some of you hate Norton but thats what I got back in the day so its what I'm using) and the scan keeps stopping about half an inch from completion and just sitting there. The computers fans start to run like its working too hard or something and it will not go any further. It has stopped with around 49946 files left three times in a row now. What's going on? I have tried to delete the file it keeps stopping on then it just stops in the next in line. I just got Leopard and don't want to install until I know my system is ok. On a side note what Anti-Virus is best for Macs?

For the past month or so, I've started to have some really weird problems with my Mac Pro. Applications will suddenly stall out or freeze up (endless rainbow wheel), and Force Quit won't work to quit them. It happens most often with iTunes and Finder, but it's also happened with Firefox once or twice. The whole system doesn't freeze or stall - I can generally still use another application (i.e. if iTunes stalls and won't quit, I can still continue to use Firefox, etc.), but generally if I leave it this way too long another application with eventually freeze, forcing me to shut down by holding down the power button (Shut Down won't work in these cases).
Occasionally when this happens, I have left my computer alone, and sometimes it unfreezes or unstalls by itself, but this is usually hours later, and sometimes it doesn't do this even after hours of waiting. I ran a hardware test thinking that faulty RAM might be the issue, but the hardware test said everything was OK. I don't know if I should believe that or not. I've tried repairing permissions and verifying all disks, internal and external, and everything checked out OK. What is going on here? Why do things keep freezing/stalling and forcing reboots?
Here is what I've got:
2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
2GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Running Mac OS X 10.5.8
I have really normal stuff installed - MS Office, Photoshop, Ableton, etc. No really weird third-party applications other than some really simple stuff. I'm not the type to overwhelm my computer with a bunch of crap.

Has anyone else had an issue with Safari seeming to get "stuck" loading a particular element on a page? The progress info in the status bar always says "17 of 18" or "42-43". At first I thought it was GlimmerBlocker, but it seemed to reoccur without GlimmerBlocker. Refreshing the page always makes the site load properly, and I frankly have no idea what is going on.
I really like Safari, but the lack of proper extensions kills it. GlimmerBlocker puts a lot of that back, not only adblocking but things like easily searching wikipedia and so on. So I am loathe to blame GB for doing this. A few sites seem to do it on a fairly regular basis (Item 17 on CNN.com seems to be one of them), although it never happens when loading from the cache, nor is it guaranteed to happen.

lately i have noticed my computer running slow. It is a MacBook Pro OS x 10.4.11 processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo memory 2 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM My HD capacity is 148.73 GB Available 22.07 GB (used 126.66 GB) Internet DSL (verizon) At first i noticed it while browsing the web, trying to see a video on youtube. it would cut the transmission or take time loading pages. I first thought it was my internet connection, but now it even seems slow when I open documents (Word, for example) and even when I am typing (i noticed this 3 days ago, and now I am really concerned) In april, I did a complete reinstallation of my OS and all applications, hoping it would be working better (at that time my CD/DVD drive would sometimes reject discs when I tried to burn music or a video-that i had made) i have 12.4 GB in movies 18.48 GB in music and 33.98 GB in pictures and videos could this be the cause of such a slow down? I don't want to go out and spend money i don't have right now, in an external hard drive to free up space, and maybe this was not the cause of the slowdown. As music educator I keep record of my students' work with pictures and video, so i like to have this at hand, and I am working with this right now.

Recently, after installing Messages from the Apple website, my MacBook Pro has been struggling to perfrom the simplest tasks such as switching tabs in Safari or typing out a sentence in Pages. When it happens the laptop is unresponsive and the coloured mouse wheel appears for about 20-40 seconds and then it will work. It is extremely agrivating. I have thought about reinstalling but surely there is a simple reason

I have tried deleting cache, repairing permissions etc, even installing a new OS on my old G4 running Panther.
Does anyone know what causes this slowdown? Is it hardware related?
I have also experienced the same problem on G5 Macs, 5 years old.
The console doesn't give much away either!

I have a 10.4 iMac. Recently when using it the screen starts to pixelate with large random squares and effectively makes the computer useless. Either that or I get moving multicoloured flashing squares (very psychodelic)Also on booting up the grey screen with the apple logo has dark grey sqaures and then when it goes to the blue screen has a series of smaller squares top and bootom. The booting up stops at this point.
I have ran the disk doctor, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

8 month old MBP 15" i7 4GB RAM 500GB HDD, took it in last week to get the logic board replaced (computer wouldn't boot up) and now it is running fine, although at random times the display will go haywire and I am forced to restart the comp (manually). Why is it doing this? Do I need to update something? Is it related to the new logic board at all?

I've had my iMac, 27" 3.4 Ghz i7 16GB, since Jan 2012. From my excitement of having 2TB, I put all my info from every hard-drive ever owned on it, deleting the originals with the faith that I can trust it till I purchase a 2TB external for the backup.Â
Two months later it crashed showing the 'grey screen of death' and got stuck with every restart on the welcome-screen (grey apple logo with the circuling loading graphic underneath) only with a new loading bar in below them. The service center claimed the HD crashed, and replaced it (and it took me more than a month going around finding a place that would recover the data before they could replace the HD)Â
I finally receive it after a long period of living on this earth without a computer (which is problematic for a freelancing graphic designer) and 4 days later crashes again the same exact way, this time the service center claimed it was a software problem but got it fixed.Â
I've received it yesterday again and I only downloaded trusted software (VLC, DIVx...) and did not dare transfer any old data and stuck to only surfing the net catch up to what life I've been missing out on. It is still crashing but restarting fixing it.Â
The only thing common with all 11 'crashings' is safari was open, and I really doubt and do hope that it's not the problem.

The hardware test and techtool show no problems but I'm positive the ram is the culprit.
