Software :: How To Increase Local Drive Space
Jan 16, 2009
I'm trying to install civilization IV on an Imac G5, power processor, 1.8 Ghz, 512 ram, 80 GB hd, on tiger. When I click on the disc it says I need more local drive memory. When I check the drive, it has 2GB of memory, which is the size of the disc. What do I do?

OK, so I am completely new to mac. The last time I used a mac computer was when my family had one around 1994/1995. So, I don't know how to do completely basic things like this.
I got my macbook on Saturday, less than a week ago. Last night I bought the Sims 2 at the apple store and I asked the guy if it would run good on it. He went through all of the requirements and said that my computer surpassed all of them.
So I go to run it and it won't run and says I need to free up local disk space. Basically I'm wicked pissed right now and am worrying that something is wrong with my computer or he was lying and I can't return it. How do I free this up? Is it a big deal that I need to do this after having the computer for less than 5 days? This is the only big program I've installed so far. I've only installed basic stuff like office and my printer so I don't know how it could be out of space already.

if I want to increase the HD space I designated to Windows, how do I do so? I can easily adjust RAM and what not... but HD space seems fixed? I'm worried about running out.And my other question is... why is 256MB VRAM the max I can allow? According to microsoft's website... 128MB is the minimum recommended amount for Vista Ultimate... and my MBP only has 256MB on it.. so will maxing it out at 128 (max as in it's all vbox will allow) be ok for both windows and my mac? (I'm assuming it then only gives Mac OS 128MB

I'm running a 64 bit Matlab simulation on an enormous dataset and OS X (not Matlab) is telling me I'm running out of space on my startup disk for "application memory". I've got 300GB of free space on the hard drive, and only 60GB used as swap. I think the limit I'm hitting is the 64th swap file.

I am thinking of buying a MBP, and I want to do my research correctly .
I want to get the base model (the 2.66ghz seems like a ripoff...), but upgrade the harddrive space. If I increased it from the 240gb to the 500gb, would that make my computer faster? Or what would the effects of it be? I am just wondering to see whether I should go for he 500gb or the 320gb...I do not want to get the SSD since they are pretty expensive at this point.

I've backed up all the contents of my computer to a 1TB external hard drive connected by USB (LaCie Porsche). Time Machine is working perfectly with it! Now, I want to erase lots of files from the startup disc or do whatever I need to do in order that I might have way more available memory on the startup disc. I need to know that my backups of iPhoto are truly on the external drive, and then I need to do something so that the memory available on my desktop is maximized.

Strange as it may seem, when I installed Snow Leopard, I immediately freed almost 40 gig on my Macbook pro (can't imagine why) and speed was increased by a factor of 2-3 times. One more thing is that parallels is now "almost" as fast as a native program, especially with Quicken for windows, which is the only reason that I use parallels.

I broke the disk into two logical volumes. In one volume, had an operating system. In the second volume of stored programs. Then I needed to increase the size of the system drive. What I did:1. Booted from installation disk.2. Remove the second partition.3. Increased the size of the first (system) disk.4. Check the disk and partition for errors.

I only have like 8 gb left on my macbook's hard drive. Are there any programs I can run that will defrag/free up space? How much does Apple Store typically charge to upgrade a hard drive? How easy is it to do myself?

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

I disabled local snapshots because they were using up 43GB of hard disk space that I needed for other things.I used this command in terminal: sudo tmutil disablelocal..Instead of having the local snapshots be deleted, they are somehow littering my hard drive still.I have searched my drive, but still can't find them. Is there any way I can reclaim this hard disk space?I also tried running a repair in disk utility and re-indexing Macintosh HD.

It was under my understanding that on a laptop Lion will continue to take snaphots even when it is disconnected from the drive it uses to store time machine backups. However I have a message back up failed, when I opened the time machine preferences I see this;
So I went in to the options to see what items are being excluded from the backups and lone behold my local drive is marked as to be excluded. The problem is it is greyed out and I can't remove it.Â
Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I try to look enter time machine there is nothing present. The only time I can see my backups is by holding down the option key and selecting browse other backup disks. Is there a library file or something I can delete without loosing my past backup history?Â

I'm about to reformat my HD and do a fresh install of OSX10.6. I read that zeroing out with disk utility can map bad sectors and even increase write speed slightly. Is this legit? Should I take the extra time to do this now to save time later? Here's the link: [URl]

I have two sets of contacts in my address book, one on local drive and one from iCloud. How do I delete all the contacts from my local drive as they are all out of date?
I have tried deleting the contacts but they keep reappearing. I have tried to create a new group and they keep disappearing! I have read forums and some talk about removing the two addressbook.plist files but I don't even have those in my preference folder...
If I do not have those files, where is my address book storing these contact information and how do I get rid of them? It is driving me nuts having to deal with two lots of each contact and not being able to create groups or delete contacts.

I spent two weeks obsessing on what type of drive to put in my new 8-core Mac Pro (january 2008). I was all set on spending $$$ and go with two 1-TB Samsung's but at the last minute I read this:
[URL] which posted better World Bench ratings than a 10k Raptor and is quieter than WD's Green drives - NewEgg had been out of stock of this brand new drive and suddenly got a batch in and I ordered two of these (WD Caviar 640 Gig / 16 meg cache w/only 2 drive plates). This drive is LIGHTNING fast....I've got before and after bench marks to post, I went from a 56.84 to a 102.91! Also, these installed so easily - not a single hitch!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)
I apologize as I suspect this post would be better placed in a Mac os x forum instead. When I had a PC, I would periodically (once a year) wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything. I found this helped to have the computer run quicker, I assumed by cleaning the registry out.
Obviously my Mac runs a number of maintenance protocols that help to mitigate this. Regardless, is there any benefit to a wipe and a reinstall from time capsule, or would the results be effectively the same?

I have a time Capsule that is nearly filled. It is giving me error messages each night it tries to backup saying that there is too much on my computer to backup. So, I went out and bought a 4TB Western Digital external drive. I want to copy all the data from the time capsule onto the new hard drive (so I don't loose any of my older backups) and then have the time capsule use that same WD drive as my new backup. I have seen there are ways to copy from time machine drives to new external USB drives, but I was under the impression time machine uses a different kind of backup method than a time capsule.
Is that true? Can someone point me to a place that explains how exactly I would copy the drive in the time capsule. (I understand I need to use Disk Utility, but I cant get the TC drive to show up in that program). Also, is there a way to instruct time capsule to stop using its own internal drive and use the drive connected to its USB for the backups? I think Apple's answer is no, but I dont know if thats really the case or not.

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?
